Copa To Launch Own FFP Separate From Mileage Plus

Wed Nov 19, 2014 4:35 pm

United announced today that CM and UA will no longer share the same frequent flyer program, Mileage Plus. This will effective July 2015. More details to follow later.

Copa probably is tired of UA devaluing their program so much. I'm a big UA flyer, but I'm happy for Copa. I hope they come out with a robust and rewarding program.
Whatever

I guess we know what Copa meant when they spoke of FF changes at one of their investor events.

Clearly the restructuring of MP to a revenue based model was not something Copa wanted to go along with. While the model I think is the right one long term, its not something Copa's regional competitors have adopted yet unlike in the U.S.

I'm not sure it has much to do with UA's changes so much as CM just wanting to gain control of its frequent flyers. The airline generally scorches the rest of the industry in terms of profitability, so why should it hand its frequent flyers to someone else's program? Bring it in house and monetize it....

Maybe Copa could revive the OnePass name.

Maybe this... but mostly the one above.

I think the real reason, is to make THEIR elites happy. Right now, ANY UA elite can be on the list for a Comp. upgrade on a Copa Flight. With them having their own program, it limits the benefits like that to their OWN regular flyers, not all the regular flyers of another airline based in another country who may happen to find themselves on Copa once in a while.

I for one am glad to hear this. All my Mileage Plus miles are from flying on Copa, and I have been at the back of the line for upgrades a couple of time because of MP UA elites. Good for Copa!

The reveue requirement only applies to MP accounts with US addresses.

Per internal notice at Copa it said the broad CM-UA commercial partnership agreements were due for renewal in 2015, and this move was result of that.
CM believes by having its own FF program they can best serve their clients in the Americas and counter competing mileage programs such as AV/TA LifeMiles and LANPASS.
They also stated that UA remained a hugely important partner to CM as it was the #1 interline revenue generator for CM.

It applies to everyone. Earning is based on spend. Entire program changes from distance to revenue based one. Copa was stuck accepting this, or luckily had the freedom starting in 2015 to do its own thing.

Maybe, but LOWS could have been referring to the PQD on the status side, since those are US only, not the award earning side.
