What NWA Planned For Their 787s?

Thu Nov 20, 2014 12:55 am

Before the merger with Delta, Northwest ordered 787s, but they already had a young fleet of A330s. Now I wonder, what was their plans for their 787s? Were they going to start some new routes, or use the 787s as a down size replacement, for their aging 744s? I would love to have seen a Northwest 787, that beautiful NWA livery, combined with those bright lights on the 787, would have been great for spotting.

Supposedly MEM-NRT was in the works.
When wasn't America great?

Would like to see them used on current routes with the more efficient frame. DTW/MSP would be great.

Yuppers! The OP asked what NW was planning to do with the planes when they ordered them. Reading through that thread vs. the state of things today was really interesting.

True, but the only thing that has changed since then in the context of the OP's question is that the order is now held by DL, not NW, by virtue of their merger.

While that thread is a interesting blast from the past, there is a lot of wild speculation.

The last guidance from NW while they were a stand-alone airline was that the 787s were going to be used on the following routes:

DTW-PEK
DTW-PVG
JFK-NRT

Other possibilities were:
LAX-NRT
DTW-KIX

They were primarily going to be for Asia flying, flown on routes where the 744 was far to large

That's interesting, since one thing the A330neo/A359 combination does not bring relative to B788 is "long and thin".

The A330/A359 can do some of the routes you list but at various disadvantages relative to B788.

So, since the merger, are these ex-NW routes seeing more feed due to the integrated network and are thus more suitable for the A359?

Post-bankruptcy, my department was asked to model (not that we necessarily would have done it) flying to all North Asia destinations from DTW and all Southeast Asia destinations from SEA, i.e., not enough range from DTW. No MSP modeling.

What about DTW-BGW? I remember when NW was one of the airlines that was going to be allowed to fly there after everything settled down...

It was planned to be a DC-10 via AMS, I wonder if at some point it would have been a nonstop with a 787. I guess we will never know.
