Will JetBlue Ever Start BOS-SLC?

Sat Nov 29, 2014 9:18 pm

Wondering why B6 has never started BOS-SLC? It seems that SLC is the biggest hole in B6's BOS network. B6 already flies from SLC to JFK, LGB, and MCO, so you think BOS would be the next destination.

Either BOS or FLL will be B6's next addition from SLC. I'm still trying to figure out why MCO got added first...although it appears to be off to a very strong start. (And MCO is a higher margin focus city for B6 than BOS or FLL.)

I think B6's biggest consideration is the reaction from DL. Don't forget that B6 still needs to add BOS-ATL and BOS-MSP, eventually. All such additions will elicit aggressive responses from DL (see: B6's addition of BOS-DTW last year).

If only DL would bring SLC-BDL back..... ugh you're making me mad after all these flights BDL has lost, LOL!

Quoting SLCSFOPDX (Thread starter):

I wouldn't doubt in the least a SLC-BOS route is on B6's radar, but they are probably weighing the odds.
-What percentage of their connecting JFK traffic will connect through BOS instead?
-How will DL retaliate? Will it then be worth it?

MCO also has a higher O&D from SLC than FLL or BOS do.

Even though DL has a monoply on SLC-BOS and there is definitely room for competition, DL is quite the fierce competitor.

As I have mentioned before, it is odd to me that DL hasn't retaliated on AA's SLC-MIA announcement. If B6 jumped in on SLC-FLL beore DL does, things could get interesting.

What is B6's gate situation at SLC...do they have one or two gates (I heard they have recently moved gates again at SLC?), and where are they located? Just wondering if B6 could add both FLL and BOS, considering SLC's lack of gates?

I posted reasons why BOS-SLC wouldn't be the greatest idea are here:

Interview With Incoming B6 CEO

To sum it up O+D is 200-275 PDEW. DL only flies one daily in winter - that has to tell you something.

Wouldn't you rather compete for the 1200 PDEW on BOS-ATL or the 600-700 PDEW on BOS-MSP. It would be easier to fill 2-3 E-190's, 2 A320's, or a mix of both off those numbers (probably higher for ATL). International connections (EK, TK, FI, EI etc.) would do better in those markets as well.

No its the size of the O+D market for BOS. They had an opening in DTW -a much larger market that they could steal pax from and they framed it with their "connect to EK and TK" spiel. They don't care what Delta does though as you will see below DL could drive them off BOS-SLC with little effort.

What can DL really do?
Add BOS-TPA, increase BOS-MCO, and make BOS-FLL/PBI year-round and bleed $$$?
Add BOS-SEA/SFO and get into it with other carriers?
Lose money running BOS-PLS/NAS during summer? Oh wait they already did that. I didn't see the PLS flight approach 400 all summer.

I would expect a stronger response for MSP-BOS that ATL-BOS or SLC-BOS.

BOS-MSP = DL will go crazy on Florida routes and add BOS-AUA. Possibly convince VS to cut interline agreement unless its really helping the bottom line.

BOS-ATL = This is a wild card. They may actually be hoping B6 enters and drives WN off. They may run a season BOS-TPA/AUA flight just throw a hissy-fit

BOS-SLC = I think they just soften prices and keep BOS-SLC at 2 frequencies all year until B6 gives up. It will be a good year for those looking to get a ski trip into Snowbird or BYU students that got an internship in Boston.

The real question is will B6 ever grow out of their niche into flyover country?
