I've read the article,I had a personal interest on this particular accident as an Airbus pilot and now as an A330 pilot.I have to say it is the most through explanation of the series of incidents I have read. Most probably written or supervised by a type rated Airbus pilot.
The rules and inventions in aviation are always written by the blood of the previous pilots. So I always wished that nobody learns anything from something that happens to me.But this accident tought us a lot of things. The dependence on automation is collapsed.Of course we still use the automation,we have to ,it is not possible maintain the same amount of vigilance for a 14 hour work day(12 hours if its night time) but now we feel that the auto stuff can leave you empty handed at the time you most needed it.We introduced (we already had but)better understandings and training of "unreliable airspeed" mulfunctions and how to fly the airplane in such cases. But ofcourse in the simulator, you are prepared and know what is going to happen, but in the middle of a all night long flight where two copilots flying together and the captain is at rest is something very hard.
Now what we do do is prepare the "unreliable airspeed" attitudes and thrust settings for evey half hour and put it somewhere handy, until the PNF takes out the QRH and checks the relevant data, menwhile PF keeps the airplane under control. Then you fly with refference attitudes and thrust settings depicted on QRH while you try the solve and correct the mlfunction,if it can be done. And as the captain I try to arrange my rest period to the least challenging part of the flight, even somethimes this means I get the most undesirable period.
Airbus philospy is not to override the pilot,it is to give him the maximum help as possible when needed. But you have to know what is going to happen next on an Airbus, that is very important, otherwise the plane takes you wherever it wants and you become the passenger with the biggest window seat...
The first rule of flying every airplane(from the smallest to biggest) is FLY THE AIRPLANE. what ever happens fly the airplane, basic instrument flying that is.Then start troubleshooting. Then make a decision.
The biggest reason behind the modern time accidents is mostly the greedy airline menagers and their stupid cost reduction decisions. What ever modern gadgets you put on flight decks, its not going to finish Cost Reduction Induced Accidents...
