Air France Starts A380 Service To MIA

Mon Dec 01, 2014 11:03 am

Today Air France 90/99 will operate to CDG-MIA-CDG on board an A380. This is the first time Air France sends the A380 to MIA.

This is MIA 2nd A380, after Lufthansa.

This A380 service is for the winter season.

Currently, FlightAware has Air France flight 90 to arrive around 5pm EST.

Congrats to MIA and AF!

.... Good question. I'd believe they would move Lufthansa/Air France to the F terminal in the mean time.

But remember an A380 gate at the North Terminal is being made.

An A380 gate at Concourse H is currently under planning.

Great and congrats to MIA and AF. I'm forward to seeing more A380 service to MIA. The only other future airlines I see going A380 on MIA are QR and EK or EY. I don't see any South American airline ordering the A380, not even in the distant future...

That is way too much aircraft and it will never last. That route can only sustain a single 777 a day and I can guarantee you they are losing money.

I was thinking about them but I personally don't see them sending A380's to MIA, I can see them sending other ultra longhaul widebodies such as the A350 or the 777X. I also don't think the A380 has the legs to do Asia-Miami nonstop. Please correct me on this.

My understanding is that in the case of AF, MIA has enough demand for Y but the problem is J and F, hence why they operate a high density 77W to MIA.

None of those serve MIA today, and QF probably can't reach MIA nonstop, so chance is quite low, if not zero

Basically boils down to euro3 plus ME3

Not sure about capacity of A388 to do ICN - MIA non stop.

The next airline to bring the A380 is BA , next fall. Btw no gates are CURRENTLY being modified for A380. MIA has plans to do it in the north terminal and now recently in the south terminal in concourse H. But as of right now no work has been done.

I see that LaneDFW got my "Tongue-in-Cheek" comment earlier.

I'm happy that MIA is receiving further A380 service. As with all markets, I'm sure AF has done their homework and truly believe they can make the aircraft work on that route. Since, like most of us, I do not have their in depth analysis of the route, I won't criticize the aircraft being deployed on the route.

Best of luck to AF in this case.

It if arrives at 4:45pm like it says its current ETA is we will see today. There is an F gate that is A380 capable I have seen LH A380 park there due to a canceled flight.

If it can do ICN-ATL. It can do ICN-MIA without any problem. It's only a little farther.

Qantas is probably not just because its too far, maybe a second generation 787-9 if Qantas ever buys them.

Korean or Asiana could be the first Asian Oriental airline to Miami since Korea is closer then just about every other country short of Japan. JAL & ANA are not aventurous when it comes to new routes, San Diego, San Jose and Boston are safe destinations. A JAL 787-8 would be a great sight at MIA or an AA 787.

That extra "little farther" might as well be the extra distance that the A380 can't bridge on a nonstop flight. Of course I hope I'm wrong because I wouldn't mind seeing a KE or OZ A380 land in MIA

An A388 would have no problem whatsoever covering ICN-MIA... well, in range anyway.
Profitably filling it might be another thing. Tons of people going from MIA to Japan, Philippines, and Hong Kong, but who knows what kind of premium they'll pay for a cnnx that just happens to be in Asia, versus one that's stateside.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

You're absolutely right. we used to send a B747 and then a high density B777. That was AF choice. But there is a market for F or J demand on that route. So we were waiting for the A380 loads to see how it works, and it is pretty good so far. Even in the F class! (There has not been a F service to Miami in years from AF!!)

The B777 doing that route was configured with no F seat and 42 J seats, and the A380 has 9 F seats and 80 J seats.
Everyday so far, there is from 2 to 6 F seats sold and from 60 to 80 J seats sold.

AF operated a mid-density 77W to MIA. The high density 77Ws in AF's fleet only have 14J.

But that's a unique thing for AF in the Miami market - most airlines tend to operate lower-density planes with F to MIA. Air France was, until yesterday, the only European airline to MIA that offered an F product and did not offer it on fights to MIA. The other Euro carriers with F products - BA, LH, LX, UN - offer F on all their flights to MIA (12w LH, 14w LX, 17w BA, 2w UN).
