Quoting csturdiv (Reply 2): Was a complete joy when the route started to go B738. Last flew a M80 on DFW-ORD and after the horrendously long flight from SYD I was not looking forward to being crammed into that plane, |
Quoting threepoint (Reply 3): Ugh, while no doubt a technological marvel, the 738 is, for me, among the worst airplanes in terms of passenger experience. There is no joy in flying on them. |
Quoting 777stl (Reply 5): At least in AA's fleet, the 738 is far superior to the MD80 |
Quoting dcaord (Reply 6): Well, nothing beats how quiet it is sitting up in F on a mad dog |
Quoting csturdiv (Reply 2): I am not so sad for the retirement of the M80. |
Quoting 777stl (Reply 5): I will not miss the MD80. Their time has gone and past. |
Quoting LAX772LR (Reply 7): Says who? |
Quoting LAX772LR (Reply 7): More quiet when up front, and the option of 2 seats if traveling with a friend/partner when in the back. |
Quoting LAX772LR (Reply 7): I stare at a screen for 10-12hrs+ per day... can definitely go a few hours without "needing" IFE. Will miss the heck out of the MadDogs when they're gone. |
Quoting nomorerjs (Reply 9): The Mad dogs are leaving, even DFW to ORD is loosing them. |

Quoting dcaord (Thread starter): Flying into ORD on Sunday |
Quoting dcaord (Thread starter): Sunday after Thanksgiving, and not a single MD-80. A sad sight, but one we should all brace for. Certainly a glimpse into the all-too-near future. |
Quoting 777stl (Reply 10): I grew up in STL. MD80s were the lion's share of what TWA flew out of there. Then AA rolled in and flew MD80s out of there almost exclusively for the past decade+, with the occasional 757 thrown in. I've probably taken more MD80 flights than everyone in this thread combined. It was all we had. I will not miss them. |
Quoting TWA772LR (Reply 13): If you think ORD is bad just wait until DFW (Mad Dawg central) starts lacking MDs, and ATL. Its like seeing DTW and MEM with out red-tailed DC9s.. |
Quoting American 767 (Reply 11): The MD-80s are not leaving that fast. There is still hope that a few of them will remain in the fleet in the early 2020s. It's not because wikipedia says retirement 2018 that one has to say they'll all be gone in 2018. |

Quoting DeltaMD95 (Reply 18): A press release on new-build delivery deferrals would be welcomed news. |
Quoting dcaord (Thread starter): Flying into ORD on Sunday, I was saddened to see nearly every gate filled, and 4 different aircraft types, ERJ-145, CRJ 700, EMB 175 and 737-800. Notice anything missing? Nearly every single (about 90%) gate filled on the busy Sunday after Thanksgiving, and not a single MD-80. A sad sight, but one we should all brace for. Certainly a glimpse into the all-too-near future. |
Quoting crownvic (Reply 21): I guarantee you, it was more sad when all the planes with #2 engines on the roof/tail (i.e. 727 & D10s) along with a big needle coming out of the top of the tail, dominated this same ramp, with "AA" on the tail. |
Quoting deltal1011man (Reply 19): AA has been upping its game in CHI. |
Quoting UA444 (Reply 20): If they want to defer CAP EX for other other ventures, that'd be a great way to do it. If fuel comes down and keeps coming down like many are speculating, it will actually truly make sense to keep some of the newer MDs for a few years more, especially on short haul routes. |
Quoting 777stl (Reply 10): Says me. |
Quoting 777stl (Reply 10): I've probably taken more MD80 flights than everyone in this thread combined. |
Quoting DeltaMD95 (Reply 22): The mainline to DCI ratio is a joke at ORD, when compared to DL's ATL HQ. |
Quoting jfk777 (Reply 25): the Mad dogs represent a past era at AA. The era that replaced the Boeing 727. |
Quoting DeltaMD95 (Reply 22): with few exceptions. |
Quoting dcaord (Thread starter): not a single MD-80. A sad sight, but one we should all brace for. Certainly a glimpse into the all-too-near future. |
Quoting 777stl (Reply 5): I will not miss the MD80. Their time has gone and past. |
Quoting DeltaMD95 (Reply 18): A small consolation, there are reports that MD80s will return on ORD-LGA/EWR/MCI service for 2015. |
Quoting reality (Reply 8): I alway found the F section to be much noisier than the center part of the cabin, for some reason. The rear was definitely noisier. |
Quoting dcaord (Reply 4): I'm really looking forward to seeing some AA (not US) A321's and A319's at ORD |
Quoting commavia (Reply 26): That's because AA's ORD hub is in a market split between three airlines (AA, Southwest and United) and there just isn't enough traffic to go around to fill tons of mainline for all three. |
Quoting dcaord (Thread starter): Sad AA Site At ORD |
Quoting AAIL86 (Reply 16): Meh. To each his (or her) own. I prefer 2-3 in general, it's far more passenger friendly then 3-3. I'd take an MD80 over a 737 anytime, especially for a 2-3 hour flight. And I'd be happy to call you on that claim of taking more MD-80 flights then the rest of the thread combined |
Quoting WA707atMSP (Reply 37): I flew on an AA 319 for the first time this summer, and it was absolute misery. |
Quoting sw733 (Reply 29): As someone who lives in an MD-80 heavy city, I'm ready for those pieces of junk to be gone. I've been bit enough times by MD-80 maintenance-related delays. Good riddance with them. Sure, they're comfortable inside and I love the 2-3 seating, but...good riddance with them. |
Quoting mainMAN (Reply 38): Interesting thread. I've only ever been on one Douglas/MD flight, and that was a KLM DC-9 30 years ago. I now hopefully have enough time to make it across the pond to sample another! |
Quoting 777stl (Reply 41): That's exactly my point. They're only sexy to people who haven't flown them often and are nostalgic for them. It's pretty much all I flew for two decades, I've done my time and I'm done with them. |
