Routes No Longer Served By Luxair

Tue Dec 02, 2014 4:01 pm

Just wanted to walk down memory lane and compile a list of destinations/routes that Luxair served in the past.

Here are the ones that I can think of:

From Luxembourg:

1. Manchester
2. London LHR
3. Amsterdam
4. Brussels (?)
5. Paris ORY (replaced by CDG)
6. Metz/Nancy (still served?)
7. Zurich
8. Rimini
9. Venice (?)
10. Torino (via Stuttgart)
11. Dusseldorf
12. Stuttgart
13. Salzburg
14. Athens
15. Sharm-el-Sheik
16. Monastir
17. Paphos
18. New York EWR
19. Nairobi
20. Johannesburg

From Saarbrucken:

1. Munich

I was always fascinated by the Luxembourg - Johannesburg flights flown with a Luxair B747SP.
Does anyone know the background/reason etc for these flights? I know it had to do with the anti-apartheid sanctions and direct flights being banned from some countries in Europe to South Africa.
Was the B747SP theirs or did they (wet/dry) lease it? Did they use it on any other route?

There were two South African SP models in disguise !

Prior use of South African 707s had also occurred

They used to fly to Paris (LBG). I flew that route in an F-27.

If they have cancelled 25 routes over the years, many of them big airports, what do they have left?
Come, fly the prevailing winds with me

Other big airports, plus many holiday destinations.

Big city airports:

1. London LCY
2. Stockholm
3 . Copenhagen
4. Hamburg
5. Berlin
6. Frankfurt
7. Munich
8. Geneva
9. Paris CDG
10. Nice
11. Barcelona
12. Madrid
13. Lisbon
14. Oporto
15. Vienna
16. Milan
17. Rome
plus some more that I cannot think of right now.

And then many leisure destinations: several Canary islands, Madeira, Algarve, Costa del Sol, Baleares, Corsica (four airports in Corsica), Sardegna, Sicily, Dubrovnik, Greek Islands, Turkish Riviera...

The only one missing from your numbered list that is on the LG 'Destination' list on their web site is Dublin.

It does not list any of your holiday destinations but this may be because they are seasonal or charter flights.

LUX-DUS-LUX is served twice weekly, opb and code-shared with HR - and operated with a Cessna Citation jet...!

Other than that, I do not recall scheduled Luxair flights to DUS in the past 20-30 years. If so, it must have been 1970s or before.

I think they had them in the 1980s or early 1990s. Served with SWM if I remember correctly.
