Strange Mini Airport North Of LCY

Wed Dec 03, 2014 1:25 pm

Hi Everyone,

I was doing some Uni group work on London City Airport and we noticed in the small brownfield area (Royal Albert Dock area) to the north of the airport, that there was what appears to be a miniature runway and the outline of a tiny airport, complete with access road to the north and apron/taxiway areas. We tried googling what it was, to see what it is/was used for, or whether it is someone just messing around on the land making their own little mini airport layout. We are well and truly confused. The photos were having issues uploading so have attached links below; it is also very clearly visible looking on google maps.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Yes. It was used for the Red Bull Air Race.

That site has also been used to repair a Swiss RJ100 which had a heavy landing at LCY a few years back. It will soon become a Chinese business park.

What was the purpose? I suppose that during the Air Race LCY was/had to be closed anyway, so why the additional mini runway?

Was that the RJ on that YouTube video that is pretty well known? In the strong crosswinds? I cringed when it hit ground.

I believe the one you are talking about is the Swiss one. Different aircraft.

Well it will remain in place but will be funded and run by a Chinese group as a base for Chinese business in the UK.
