The last was to SFO in late August. I watched it depart. I believe they may be using some for regional service.

The only long-haul flight by a pax CX 744 in future will be a one-way service from HKG to VCV unfortunately.

You know, I'd like to know this too. I'm in Hong Kong for a good amount of time in April/May 2015 and maybe I could take a joyride wherever they fly them...

They are running a couple of regional routes, but substitutions are also common. Based on the current schedules, your best bet could be HKG-HND where there's consistently at least one of the two daily flights operated by the 744.

Or maybe to SYD or MEL? Or maybe for a sudden equipment change for other long haul flights like LHR etc?

CX flights to MEL are all operated by A330 and I believe the HKG to SYD flights are operated by A330 although I recently saw ads for the introduction of the B777 to the SYD route. I know at least on of the HKG-MNL flights is re still scheduled to be operated by the B744 as I have checked it a number of times recently.

Routes that have had CX 744s on in the last week, include:

KIX, CTS, HND
TPE
PVG, PEK

So the use appears to primarily be restricted to regional routes to Japan, Taiwan and China.
Flown in: A20N,A21N,A30B,A306,A310,A319,A320,A321,A332,A333,A343,A346,A359,A388,BA11,BU31,(..56 more types..),VC10,WESX

4-5 of them are supposed to leave next year but it is expected (but not announced) that the remainder will all be retired in 2015.

Since when is Cathay competing with an LCC to Sydney ? CX flies a 777 with First Class there because they must sell 3 or 4 First seats daily, their 777 with First only have 6 seats. They must have heavy J class demand too.

I think the B744's are being replaced by A350-900's. CX is supposed to take delivery of 8 frames in 2015.

Kashmon is referring to the practice that CX frequently rotates their long-haul premium config birds for short-haul trips during down times to increase aircraft utilization but at the expense of CASM. (I've flown their Cirrus J on TPE-HKG once it's awesome)

The 744s, while 3-class, at least has a sizable Y cabin to fill in all the tourists and be semi-competitive against higher density LCCs. When the 744s leave, assuming CX has to resort to rotating long-haul 330s and 77Ws into regional missions, those would be painfully uncompetitive from CASM perspective due to much higher F/J% compared to 744, but yet the missions are too short to command any meaningful paid J.

Since CX is mostly regional J to SIN, one solution I envision would be sending the flat bed J's to SIN (SQ is like 4 out of 8 flights to HKG with flat bed), and using those regional birds (including some really worn out 772As/773As) for the likes of KIX/TPE instead.

I thought CX had been scrapping them all in the UK, except for one at MWH.

They 100% own KA who are fully capable of operating A330s on all the regional routes (and already do to places like PVG), can't they just hand over the operations completely to KA's A330s (and codeshare)?

There's at least one more A330 due soon, B-LBI, that can replace B-HUE.

CX have plenty of 2 class 773 with regional J and large Y cabins: http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Cat...cific_Airways_Boeing_777-300_B.php

And I really doubt CX is going after the AirAsia/Jetstar customer. They're much more premium and high-end leisure oriented.

really? the whole 777-300 reconfig in 2009 was specifically to target air asia and prevent LCC's from gaining dominance on vital routes- CX knows it cannot run an effective airline with only filling business class seats and cargo- because it would lose market dominance. but as lots of people internally etc think the new CEO - is not very pro active ( the 3 new destinations were planned before the new CEO)
CX have even introduced faster box meals on 1 hour flights for efficiency to compete

a long haul 777-300ER to replace the leaving 747's on regional fleets WILL fail- the entire LH network is sustained due to CX regional dominance ( mainly Economy class)

Quoting zeke (Reply 21):

A350's will not be replacing 777's CX does not retire aircraft until 2020- the older 777-300ER is will only be 9 years when the A350 comes in, this idea that CX is using the A350 to replace 777's in their fleet is nonsense

yes A340's, not sure about A330's- all the A330 long hauls are extremely young now that KA has got all the older ones

it is new routes- Istanbul/ Barcelona etc

There are seven 777-300ERs arriving in 2015 as well as A330s as well. There is enough capacity especially with yields still under pressure.

The A350-900 will open new routes and replace the 777-300ER on some of the new routes such as MAN. Once the A350-1000 starts coming, they will replace the 777-300ER on certain routes, supplement the 777-300ER on other routes. Some routes may support both aircraft types.

As for the regional fleet, CX are looking into what to do. They are doing studies into whether the GE90-115B can be derated, and as to whether the 777-300ER can be recertified to a lower MTOW, and if so, what weight. They are also looking into how heavy the 777-300ER is and a combination of all these factors to see whether they can reconfigure them to a dense configuration to replace the 777-300s and use the 77W as a pure regional aircraft. The results of this study will affect whether they need to buy a dedicated regional fleet, and if so, what type. They are still some time away from making this decision. Focus at the moment is on introduction of the 359 and 35J into the fleet.

so 777's are not being replaced... cause they are NOT being retired, they will also be used then to launch new routes- they are not just going to sit on the ground at HKG...

First A350 is Feb 2016- also when new cabins will come for public use

they probably do but it looks like they are happy to lose their position in hong kong and hand over routes to HK airlines etc
also evidenced by giving up the Haneda red- eye to HK express- so putting inefficient 777's on regional routes will not surprise me.

Still do not believe CX will use the A350 as the 777 replacement- the news777's at first were used to launch new routes and replaces 747's only when they reached 21-24 years...

I believe there is a possibility that KQU will be delivered in Jan rather than Dec hence management themselves are quoting seven 77Ws for 2015.
