WN Schedule Release 12/17

Wed Dec 10, 2014 12:31 am

Next Wednesday (odd, not a Monday) WN will extend its schedule through 8/7/15.

We already know that on this day, flights to PVR will go on sale (previously announced). We also know that they intend on adding 2-3 more international cities next year so they could very well announce another.

At some point, they are going to announce their first HOU international flights. Does anyone know when the terminal is on track to be completed? I've heard completion is ahead of schedule.

SAN-BOS

Is there a possibility of an International Route to MEX from SAN or LAX?

While I've heard a lot of great Rumors and speculation about the Summer flying and the future of WN.
Unfortunately BIG Brother is watching!
Watching so much they've created a whole department dedicated to Social media!

It's been fun over the years my A.net friends.
Enjoy the schedule release and everything WN.

My predictions for this schedule is less involvement from several posters.

SAN-BOS!

I can think of a lot more likely new WN routes (from SAN) than BOS - a market with 2 cx already - but who knows?....

For instance, I wonder if it's to early to think SAN-MKE might be expanded to daily (and year-round?) IND? YVR? OMA? FLL?

Or...

yes, possibly a Mexico route of some flavor?

This being a peak-travel-season schedule release, there should be some exciting new things around the network!

After years of change and transformation, we have a clearer vision of the new SWA and I think it is so exciting to see what is ahead. Here's to the new and improved WN!

Since Gary has said that the fleet count will not increase in 2015 my safe bet is for every flight that is added there will be another taken away.

During the last earnings call Gary said WN will grow in 2015 now that ROIC goals have been hit. I think he said 15 planes will be added to the fleet?

Fleet count isn't increasing but the number of aircraft in service will increase so SWA is looking at 6% ASM growth next year.

One of the reasons that there is an ASM growth is that the 122 seat -500s and the 137 seat -300s are being retired and replaced by -700s and -800s, not additional aircraft to grow the fleet.

On 12/16/13 WN extended its schedule through 6/30/14. The only reason it didn't extend it through August as it typically does is because they later announced the first international flights. So nothing is really different than last year, its just back to normal this year.

In the Domestic side, could we finally see a CVG entry by WN? With all the recent additions of routes there, maybe WN will no longer sit by and watch others make money. Now I understand that the routes being started are a lot of leisure and VFR routes as well, so they aren't high yielding flights.

Sure there is DAY up the road, but there is plenty of business traffic in CVG that DAY could survive side by side together.

I am sure it is just wishful thinking on my part, but how many more years will WN just ignore CVG?

I would love to see CVG finally announced. It is long overdue IMHO. However, I don't think that there will be any new Domestic Cities announced for the foreseeable future. It seems to be full steam ahead for near International expansion at WN, and I don't see that changing anytime soon unfortunately for CVG.

Well you still need domestic cities to feed into those intl routes to fill them planes up.

I just think that CVG is too hard to keep ignoring for them. They need to fill that hole
in their map. Much like they filled a lot of holes with buying FL.

There is money in CVG. It is not like there are a bunch of low paying jobs there
with a median income of 20k a year.

I just hope that CVG opens in 2015 and that then WN will continue the Intl
expansion of routes

WN has made it clear they have no current plans to add any new dots in the 48 states. They want to "connect the dots" they already have and add new international, Hawaiian and Alaskan dots. That is WN talking, not me.

It really isn't much of a hole though. They have DAY and CHM.

...and to both of these great comments, I will add that there's still plenty of connect-the-dots to be done between existing stations -- both new and old -- to keep the network and schedule planning departments busy for a long time.

It's not always about adding new stations. Growth and expansion can also be accomplished by filling in service gaps that already exist in the system.

Sure WN has said it's main focus will be Intl flying and connecting the dots. They did not guarantee that they wouldn't add anything on the domestic side. Now crude prices are dropping, profits are soaring for the airlines, and now more routes and cities look more attractive than maybe in years past.

It is not fair to the WN consumer to not have CVG as an option. DAY is right up I-25 and CMH is sort of a haul for most in the metro area. Time will tell, but there have been rumblings of CVG for a while now.

I am sure they will mature into relaity, in maybe 2020. lol

WN needs to have a shock in the bucket eventually. When they do add it, no one will ever see it coming.

All these awesome Intl places are fun and all, but we all know what area they are focused on growing.

Belize was no shocker. They are just adding up more dots in Central America.

I think some A.netters may cry tears of joy the day CVG becomes a Luv-City

Don't forget along with DAY and CMH there is also SDF. So with those three already in the system I don't see CVG becoming a WN city.

BWI-DAY has 3 daily WN mainline flights in January with advance roundtrip fares around $200, while BWI-CVG has 2 RJ flights from Delta with fares roundtrip fares around $266, and one-ways at $158.

Thus the fares look higher from Delta on BWI-CVG and fewer seats offered.

Perhaps WN has calculated it out that if it were to move the BWI-DAY flight to BWI-CVG, it'd be price matched by Delta and it'd prefer to have the BWI-DAY market to itself. I think it's odd nonetheless and I think that is a deficiency it is setting in it's BWI network, even though it tries to attain more business pax in WAS, between DCA/IAD and BWI.

There is also a lack of BWI-MSP where it gives that market to Delta. Since it's so close to having it anyways, It should have all the top business markets covered from BWI.

With a move of DAY-BWI to CVG-BWI, I'd think it could shift the single DEN flight and offer a HOU flight or twice daily to HOU. I think the leisure routes to Florida and LAS route might be already entrenched by the ULCCs (Frontier and Allegiant), but it anyways likely wouldn't want to put too much resources at CVG even otherwise since it has avoided CVG for so long anyways.

Let's all remember that the dnamics of CVG have changed. The airport must be doing something to lobby the LCC's into the airport recently. There were talks that CVG had some of the highest landing fees in the nation at one point.

As I have said earlier, WN can't just sit by and watch. Maybe they could get a nice corporate contract with some of the local comanies there.

WN is not that scrappy 80's airline anymore, you are right. It has evolved with the times to stay profitable and grow over the years.

WN is the largest domestic carrier in the United States. It is really one of the last full service airlines left. Most of the legacies and others fee you to death.

If WN enters the market, the fares will drop. People talk about how WN isn't the LCC carrier that it used to be back in the day, but in reality it still is. Fares go down when they enter a market and they force other airlines to compete. Everyone expects 39.00 fun fares to everywhere. Times have changed. I am sure G4 and F9 will get you that, but by the time the fees kick in, why even waste your time when you spend all that extra money in the end?

To each their own. I travel 3-4 times a year for vacation or VFR only. My average trip is leave on Day 1, stay Days 2 and 3, return on Day 4. I can fit all my needs in a roller board and one personal item. Haven't checked in luggage in years. I live in STL, WN and DL are my carriers of choice and I am a member of both their FF programs. If UA/AA or F9 have the better fare at the times I want I won't hesitate to book them, and use my DL Amex cards to still get points. Granted, I'm pretty flexible on travel dates, usually book 2-3 months in advance etc...etc. I don't think at this point that CVG is missing much by not having WN. It would be a plus for the area but at this point I don't think they would have a big impact on the market.

Looks like they added IND-LAX. That ought to be interesting. Wonder if this route can support 3 flights a day (DL/AA/WN). I remember FL flew this one for a while a few years back as well.

Looks like IND-BOS is on the map now as well.

OMA-LAX comes back this summer.

But, once again, no love for DSM. It seems they're perfectly content leaving DSM with 3 flights a day to MDW and LAS. If I'm not mistaken, that makes it WN's smallest station.

I'm a bit disappointed with the SAN schedule; absolutely nothing new. In fact, due to some frequency reductions, the total flights are actually less than the April 7 release.

And the new SAN-MKE route remains Saturday-only thru next summer...

(I was hoping WN might start SAN-IND but LA got the nod for nonstop service to Indiana this time.)

Oh well, it does look like WN has made some nice additions to the network, along with the return of lots of the usual seasonal adds.

Did anyone notice that they added a bunch of SEA flights? Considering the increase in capacity by AS and DL, I would assume they wouldn't want to be involved. 5 returning SEA routes will be interesting. Are they seasonal?

Thank you WN for finally restarting the MSY-OAK route. This route disappared after Katrina hit, so it's great to see it come back. This will also finally give UA some competition on this route. Excellent!

BOS clearly did MHT no favors when it came on-line. This latest release shows 13 daily flights out of MHT, which is exactly one more than the airline started service with in 1998.
