Canary Islands Tatl Service?

In the past was there any other routes to North America?The only one i know is PA(Panam) service to LPA.

I can't recall Pan Am ever operating scheduled service to LPA. It doesn't appear in any timetables I can find.

The only Pan Am flight to LPA I can recall was the 747 that diverted from LPA to TFN in 1977 and was involved in the collision with the KLM 747. That was a charter flight carrying cruise passengers.

I remember there were (charter flights) on AIr Europa between EWR To the Canary islands in the mid 90's. Not sure if it was LPA or TFS.

Air Eruopa also operated TFN-MIA for a while. It ended a couple of years ago.

But I hear loads of American accents in the Canary islands. Surely there must be demand from Los Angeles.

As far as I know this still operates into TFN.

I am sure there is a market for the Canary Islands to the US, however needs a interline with Binter to
allow connections and feed this end plus conection options at whichever US airport was used.
Plus to be cost efective from a passinger point of view. I can fly cheaper to the US routing
via the UK than via MAD so something direct is going to have to be ok cost wise
to beat/be the same and I just don´t see that. One of the reasons Air Europa stopped.
A B757 sized plane might work better, if the range.

Most Americans I meet at work have either routed through Madrid or else come via the UK.

We discussed this a few months back and the SBA flight did indeed fail. ACE has a wish for a seasonal TATL link with the plan to also extend the runway but it's just a wish and LPA wanted one too. Most Latin ex pats go IB via MAD and it certainly would not sustain a TATL. It is very low yield too. The only way I can see this work is a tag /stop but would people in MAD want to touch down in LPA etc for an hour! Probably not especially if they had already connected in MAD.

The runway issue at ACE is more about being able to fit ILS to the 21 end by displacing the LZ yet having stopping distance.Anyway unless the money appears it will just remain a wish.
Never say never but I don´t ever see TATL from ACE or China for that matter.
Plus with Tenerife and Gran Canaria always trying to out do each other, they will just scare away any
airlines half tempted when the infighting starts.
Wasn´t aware SBA had finished, noticed it inbound on FR24 a few months ago so a shame.

Cubana flew Il-62 transatlantic Havana to Las Palmas, some ethnic links between the Canaries and Cuba. It was a fairly well established service in the 70s, 80s and early 90s, although it's gone away now, I guess the Il-96 is too big but a 160 seater was perfect for the route.

It didn't fail. Loads were quite good and it was a flight used by O&D passengers. It was a once a week flight and finding a ticket on it was almost impossible. Mostly of the canaries that live in Venezuela used this flight instead of the actual painful connection at MAD with IB or UX. The problem was the end of the partnership with Smartlynx and Icelandair that made the route being axed. In the present time SBA operate the 767 but the company is not ETOPS certificated, that's why they can't resume the route. The other TATL routes that were axed under different circumstances were MAD and FNC.

It must be a mega annoyance having to fly a 1,000 miles east to then fly back west. I feel for them.

Viscount724 is correct. This was a charter flight, operated for cruise ship passengers.

It was NOT a scheduled flight.

Did you not read my reply? I referred to that. It was a charter flight. I think we're talking about scheduled services in this thread.

Could American do a MIA with a 757? This would have the benefit of Alliance presence on both sides of the route, and be a good connection hub into Latin America.

I think US - Canary Island service would be a perfect fit for the proposed A321neoLR. That aircraft will open up lots of routes that are less viable with today's equipment.

Right after FUE-KOA does. I think this route would have lots of potential, linking the two most arid islands (or in the case of the Big Island, the most arid half-island) in the two archipelagos...

That is true. I flew IB from JFK to LPA roundtrip on a IB DC-8 in the early 1970s.
