Pan Am To Return In 2015?

I didn't see this anywhere else but Flightaware is quoting a supposed USA Today story that is quoting an unnamed source saying this might happen. Here's the text from Flightaware.
The Obama Government sources say that the former Pan Am might be back in the skies again as early as 2015 a spokes person claims for the Obama administration. Reports were leaked to the press that a unnamed source has brought the copy wrights of the PAN AM logo and that the airline might be re launched in 2015 with modern wide bodied twin jet aircraft and B748's to the fleet

I couldn't find the original text on USA Today's website and I haven't seen this anywhere else. In all, it almost sounds like something from The Onlon but I thought I'd see if anyone else had seen something.

What would the Obama administration have anything to do with a reincarnation of Pan Am? Unless they are proposing a federal government run/funded airline, in which case Obama's opponents will have a field day.

I would have liked US Airways to have become Pan Am 4 if such could have happened perhaps by buying off Pan Am 3 they could have adopted the brand.

USA Today, for all its faults, isn't that illiterate in its writing style. And the Government has nothing to do with announcing commercial airlines either.

Pan Am (Pan American) is a brand that will probably never fly again, other than in the hearts of almost everyone!

I have been in the Branding business my entire career, since 1980, and I have never, ever seen or encountered a brand that is just so powerful in the heart and mind of mankind.

This morning I saw a preview for a CNN special on Roger Ebert, the late movie critic, in it was a picture of him much younger doing an air kick on the tarmac with the front section of a Pan Am 747. (non-billboard). I recall them so, so well. At that time I would have never ever thought the mighty Pan Am could ever go "out of business", never.

Why are we continually teased by yet another rumor she will start up again? Although, I'd kill to do the interiors...of what will certainly be a giant fleet of 200 747-8i's flying from JFK once a day to ever major city in the world even if half empty. (oh, their Terminal is gone)

The PanAm rights are with a Railroad Company based in Billerica MA, they have evn painted some box cars with the logo and the Color.

Even if, the "old" PanAm will never be back, as there will never be a Braniff, no TWA and whichever fallen flag. What does not xist anymore cannot be back.

I for one certainly would love to see the PanAm coming back, however, like many have stated, it is too strong in people's heart for it to come back as a new airline, no matter how much all the aviation geeks (myself included) would like for that to happen.

The brand can be bought off, money talks even in civilised socities, to add to VC10er's post, PA also conjured up images of the once wonderful country it belonged to, it wasnt just Pan Am but America too.

What the heck are copy wrights? The Wright Brothers are the only Wrights I know. Correct spelling is copyright or copyrights so I call bogus on this Flightaware report.

Why resurrect a failed brand that at least in my mind of flying them often particularly in the late 70's and 80's showed a depressing trend of steady decline in all aspects. What a negative inspiration for a new airline, nor matter the rose colored glasses of history..

I can only think of one successful brand reincarnation, and that is Frontier. That brand was reincarnated after only 8 years. While Pan Am is iconic, it is approaching 25 years since those iconic days ended.

Maybe they'll be based in Havana, that's why they mention Obama and friends.

I though Pan Am was now called Emirates!!!!

Right now I don't see any future if someone try to launch and airline like Pan Am, it's quite congested the market and it will be very difficult to get high yield pax for a start up airline, economy would not be an issue if tickets are cheap.

It will be interesting to see if they have an agenda to see planes, routes, offices... where would they be based?? Where to fly?? What fleet??

Gee......Eastern is scheduled to come back early 2015. The first plane has already been painted, the headquarter building has opened..etc and a trip has been planned from MIA-SJU, overnight. The flight is already full with 75+ on a waitlist. Granted, they will start by operating charters and then move later to regular services. Also I believe 10 737-800s are on order.

Eastern yes, but the Pan Am rights belong to Guilford Transportation... and trust me Pan Am Railways is a very real Class 2 railroad in the US North East... not just a few boxcars but all kinds of locomotives and equipment as well.

I really doubt, and really don't want, another Pan Am airline. Not because I don't want to see the meatball at the airport again, but because I don't want to see it fail AGAIN and drag the already tarnished image even further into the mud.

I like the new Eastern in that it's got a lot of backing, but look what happened to the relaunched People Express... Sadly far more airlines fail than succeed for the first 5 years, and even fewer make it to 10.

I just checked, all the Pan Am name and logo copyrights are still held by Pan Am Systems, Portsmouth, NH as of 1/DEC 2014. So this smells like a fake/pipe dream/etc. Though the report indicated that anyways...

IMHO, we now have three major US airlines with domestic and international networks that are far superior to what PanAm even in all it's glory.

One of my worst travel experiences ever was on PA, granted that was August 1991...

As you say, if you throw enough money at them, they will give up the PanAm rights, but seriously, it's going to take a huge amount of $$$ to buy those rights, get a fleet of aircraft and get the ball rolling, and then you have to go head to head with AA, UA and DL, who will fight you tooth and nail for every pax and route.

While I, along with the majority of people here would love to see the globe flying again, it's better left alone.

Though I am actually amazed no domestic has started LAS-LON service yet...........Okay, it's only one route, but it's a start.

I would preferably run it as a freight company like Pan Alpina and charter a couple of 748 in the Pan Am branding, it would not even be a cargo airline, maybe the rail company using the name can also do it.

With a daily 777 and 747, I think BA has the market sealed up. The fact that BA is there means AA doesn't care if its their metal or not. I just can't see a flight on DL or UA from a non hub airport to a non hub airport.

Don't forget the VS flights as well, but we are straying off topic.

I flew a few times on PanAm, I watched the airline fade, while in all honesty I preferred TWA, I was born a little to late to enjoy the real PanAm, and that makes me sad.
