Who makes money from the http://www.panam.com online store and merchandise that you see at airport and museum gift shops? I've bought a few things from there. For general enquiries they've given the name "Pan Am Brands."

"Copyright © 2011 Pan American World Airways" - Does the railroad company take a cut out of this?

The domain is registered to Pan Am Railways, so I guess this is part of their business.

If the railways own the barnd since 1998, how did pan Am 3 come up in 2000s wa sit their airline? or did they allow it to use the name? if so that means they can franchise the brand and earn from it.

New Pan Am CEO Clive Palmer, billionaire, plans to start Pan Am Airways with initial fleet of three Lockheed 707 aircraft and two Rekkof F-22s for Latin American services out of Opa Locka. Flights scheduled to begin in 2016, according to FlightAware.

Unless Pan Am Systems start another airline or franchise the brand to an airline, which would be a great idea perhaps starting Pan Am aviation division just to franchise the name, there will be no PA again.

Even an all 737 or A320 airline as PA will be great, anything smaller is not that exciting,

No, Pan Am has been dead for almost 25 years. Just because another company takes the name of a defunct company doesn't give it any legal rights from the former company.

However, 90% of the original Pan Am's former markets must now be Open Skies to/from the U.S. so traffic rights wouldn't be a problem for a new U.S. airline, regardless of their name.

I am almost certain that there will be another attempt to relaunch Pan Am. Guilford Transportation, now named Pan Am Systems, has always tried to keep the brand alive. Efforts include the renaming of the railroad company, the selling of Pan Am logo merchandise, the TV series in 2011 (which, btw, was a lot more popular in Europe than here in the US), and various other activities. The whole idea behind this is to relaunch the airline one day. With crude price and interest rates at historic lows, and the recent consolidation in the airline industry, there is certainly a window of opportunity in 2015.

Pan Am (Pan American) is a brand that will probably never fly again, other than in the hearts of almost everyone!

Indeed. Regardless of what one might think of Juan Trippe and his antics, the fact is that Pan Am was perceived worldwide as the flag carrier of the United States for the years it was in existence. This is why we see repeated threads of this nature on this site. Would we, for example, lament the loss of United Airlines nearly thirty years after the event?? I doubt it.

But even if an airline were to fly again using the Pan Am brand and logo; it would not instantly become "Pan Am" as we all knew it. The place an airline occupies in our hearts has not only to do with brand image, but also loyalty, legacy, route network, service, and recent history. Such things take many years to establish.

US3 would still pay less for fuel and funding - well established versus new start.

As the US3 improve, every year that passes, it's less likely we will ever see the Pan Am name on a commercial aircraft, other than in a museum.

Nor would it have the IATA code PA, what about their ICAO code and call sign, have they gone to other carries as well?

I wish people would just let PanAm die.

I also would love nothing more to see both globes fill the skies again. (TWA and PanAm) But I think the statement should be to let both airlines rest in peace. The names of both of these legendary airlines would be dragged though the mud if a resurrection was attempted.

We all have dreams for what these two airlines would be if they were flying today - but that's where they need to stay.

I am pretty sure that the Pan Am brand is completely worthless anywhere outside of the USA... In Europe, both Pan Am and TWA disappeared quietly and the only reason that the Pan Am bankruptcy made the news was because "it was caused by Lockerbie". I am pretty sure it was the same in the rest of the world. Pan Am lost its relevance 40-50 years ago.

Quoting gasman (Reply 66):

I think the majority does not lament the loss of Pan Am either. You probably find as many United supporters 30 years after its demise as you find Pan Am fans today.

There may be lots of United supporters, but while UA was basically a US trunk carrier for years, Pan Am flew around the globe, opened flying boats stops on the Asian route across the Pacific, was a force behind the jet age and finally pushed for the construction of what was during more than three decades the largest airliner and an icon.

In case anyone is wondering, it's from the movie 2010, the sequel to space odyssey. Scene from the movie...

http://youtu.be/Y8hu9N-Kz3I

I discovered a bit of a mystery when looking for a youtube link to the video. It seems that someone made a Pan Am promo, including a Pan Am space shuttle and what appears to have been used in the film rather than something original made by the films producers...

BTW: when I said I have never ever encountered a brand so dear to the hearts and minds of mankind...I meant a brand that won't die. Many huge companies from the past are gone today, but MARC JACOBS didn't make a whole series of EXPENSIVD leather bags and luggage with the RCA logo or WESTINGHOUSE or EASTERN or TWA.

I personally would buy a whole set of VARIG luggage - that brand has some stardust too! But not like Pan Am. Plus the Pan Am globe is one of the very best brand symbols ever.
