Quoting gilesdavies (Reply 2): the biggest gripe in economy is the seating on the 787's. |
Quoting gilesdavies (Reply 2): |
Quoting gilesdavies (Reply 2): 16.5 inch |
Quoting LY777 (Reply 4): Are you sure the seat width is only 16.5 inch? |
Quoting BigMac (Reply 7): According to the Qatar Airways website the seat pitch on the 788 is 30/31" (so up to 31") and the seat width is 16.89/17.28" (so up to 17.28")... For reference the brochure in the first post mentions that the seat pitch on the A359 is up to 32" and the seat width up to 18"... |
Quoting B777LRF (Reply 6): I'd advise anyone who value their sanity, comfort and humanity to stay well clear of the QR 787 in economy. |
Quoting bunumuring (Reply 9): Anyhow, the 'lobby' or 'lounge' or whatever it is in the centre of the plane looks enticing... And very big! |
Quoting TheSonntag (Reply 11): No red "EXIT" marks, instead green exit signs. Is this standard for Airbus nowadays? |
Quoting KarelXWB (Reply 12): The A380s have red exit lights, not sure why the A350 uses green ones instead. |
Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 3): It seems this is a common complaint, same is said for the BA 787's with the awful 3-3-3 layout. My NH 787 flights with the 2-4-2 were quite comfortable. 787 is on the miss list now unless travelling in J or Y |

Quoting TheSonntag (Reply 11): No red "EXIT" marks, instead green exit signs. Is this standard for Airbus nowadays? |
Quoting Boysteve (Reply 16): Which is better, which is worse? A 10 abreast B777 like EK's A 9 abreast B789 like QR's |
Quoting RJ321 (Reply 28): I personally think that civil aircraft operating long haul routes should have a 3-3-3 (just like QR in this case) or 2-4-2 configuration (like the A330) in Y rather than 3-4-3 which would really aid the comfort, privacy and satisfaction of the passengers. |
Quoting Ruscoe (Reply 26): The really telling thing is that the 359 has 29 more seats, but has 47T more MTOW and 40,000lbs more installed thrust, than the 788, and no amount of seat width can close that gap. |
Quoting gilesdavies (Reply 2): How ironic is that, the 787 seems to be Qatar Airways new cattle truck with awful seating in economy with 16.5 inch seat width and then the A350 rocks up with 18 inch seat width in economy! Having spoken with fellow Qatar Airways flyers and read numerous forums, the biggest gripe in economy is the seating on the 787's. That 1.5 inches makes a big difference to even the slimmest flyers. |
Quoting B777LRF (Reply 6): Having been exposed to the QR 787 in economy, I can vouch for the seating being absolutely horrible. Not only are they very narrow, the pitch is also very tight. But the worst part is how hard the seat is - think concrete and you're not far off. I'd advise anyone who value their sanity, comfort and humanity to stay well clear of the QR 787 in economy. |
Quoting 777Jet (Reply 27): I can't comment on the QR 787, but I've flown in both the 10 abreast EK 777 and the 9 abreast UA 787 and would take the 10 abreast 777 over the 9 abreast 787 any day of the week. That is, of course, just based on a few EK and UA flights. I just felt far more cramped in the 9 abreast UA 787 and that was only for a 2hr flight - the EK 777 flight was more than 6 times that length in duration and was fine. |
Quoting 3rdGen (Reply 32): I actually think that at some point in time there needs to be a law about how narrow those seats can be. I am seriously not a big guy, and if QR want to be sending the 787-9 on 7+ flights they had better go 2-4-2. |
Quoting TheSonntag (Reply 34): But seriously, this does not really sound like a major airline, it sounds like a charter airline. |
Quoting 817Dreamliner (Reply 34): "They don't need to do that. You can (in theory) have 18inch seats at 9Y on a 787. All they need to do is do what Airbus does on the A350." |

Quoting 3rdGen (Reply 36): But it seems like everyone is doing this |
Quoting Richard28 (Reply 37): The B787 has a narrower cabin width, which restricts the seat width on a 9Y config. The A350 fuselage is slightly wider, allowing wider seats. |
Quoting 3rdGen (Reply 32): Worst 4 hours of my life, and then just as I started to nap I was awoken and told to recline upright so the guy behind me could eat? |

Quoting 3rdGen (Reply 32): Looks like EY have also gone 9 abreast. Maybe its the only way to justify operating this aircraft? Or is it just greed on the part of the airlines? |
Quoting 3rdGen (Reply 36): The issue he didn't bother to mention is that in order to keep the same number of Y seats they would have to significantly squeeze people in the back. And it seems most airlines are going this way. |
Quoting SYDSpotter (Reply 39): or buy a slightly more expensive Y ticket on another carrier which offers slightly more comfort. |
Quoting 3rdGen (Reply 36): What does Airbus do on the 350? And if they could have 9 abreast with 18 inch seats why wouldn't they? |
Quoting Ruscoe (Reply 26): |
Quoting Ruscoe (Reply 26): |
Quoting KarelXWB (Reply 30): |
Quoting SYDSpotter (Reply 39): Well NH are going 8 abreast on their long haul 788's, so they can make it work on their routes. |
Quoting NeutronStar73 (Reply 43): 777LR will fly more passengers further the A359 and has over 40k more thrust, and will pack a hell of a lot more cargo than an a359. No amount of seat width can overcome that. |

Quoting astuteman (Reply 46): What are QR thinking of, going with the A350? |
Quoting 817Dreamliiner (Reply 41): Sorry 3rdGen, didn't see this part when I posted. Airbus uses (according to their aircraft documents) a 1.5 inch armrest on the A350, Boeing uses a 2 inch one. If you put the 2 inch one on the A350 seat width reduces it to something like 17.37 inches if I remember correctly, and with a typical seat width of 17.2 inches on the 787 with the same 2 inch armrest its only 0.17 inches difference which is roughly only 4mm. But it all depends on the airlines. These typical seat widths are only a guide. The 787 could have 17.9 inch seats at 9Y if it had 1.5 inch armrests. |
