Beautiful Aircraft.

American Airlines and the East Texas Regional Airport (Longview, Texas) have come to an agreement for the 787 to do training out of KGGG. So if anyone is around this area you could get some very good views of it. Flights should start Mid to late Feb.

Thanks for sharing.

Guys.... just as a friendly reminder.... this is NOT the AA flagship aircraft... this is a 767 replacement plane...

Still, it would be nice to have some semblance of product consistency, at least on new a/c. A little of the woodgrain veneer as seen on the 777-300 would go a long way and not cost too much I wouldn't imagine.

Are all the business class seats backwards or are there a mishmash of seats bot forwards and backwards like UA and BA has?

My single gripe and displeasure to the new logo is the full abandonment of the Double A + Eagle... Two A's and an Eagle have been in the company's logo lineage/identity since inception in the 30's...

I think once one sees the tail up close, in person, it suddenly appears much better than in photos. I also have to say that at least the livery is completely recognizable as American Airlines even from miles away. Every other plane seems to have the same billboard titles on Eurowhite.
What I do not like about the new branding is the wallpaper behind the ticket counters--it looks very inexpensive whereas the old backdrops were much more elaborate and had some 3-D relief to them.

Quoting etops1 (Reply 29):

At a quick first glance at the photo of the J Cabin I thought I was seeing a new, interesting, wave patterned wallpaper on the bulkhead--but it turned out only to be the plastic wrap from the factory!

Quoting Aacun (Reply 33):
Kind of bland looking cabin so far right?

See my comment above--no such luck; just the same plain gray everywhere. . .

Quoting jeffh747 (Reply 44):
I think that barfy looking flying taxi Spirit livery is by far the worst of all US airlines, with UA falling not too far behind.

I agree wholeheartedly about Spirit, but the new ketchup & mustard WN I think has UA beat for Fugly.

Quoting ckfred (Reply 49):
The United shield was just as iconic as the eagle and double As, yet the tulip U was unveiled in the early 1970s.

I always thought the tulip at least followed the same silhouette as the 60's shield, so it didn't seem like they abandoned their heritage. I also loved the font of 'rising blue' 's UNITED: it reminded me of the 60's UNITED, but with only the cross-bar of the T slanted. It seemed like a clever nod to that era, and also kept the striping of the Saul Bass era. Of course that's all gone now except for the many RJ's that still await repainting.

At first, it was the new livery I despised the most. I especially hated the "dirty" gray color of the fuselage and the Calibri-esque titles.

But after seeing it in person at MIA last month, I had a change of heart. Seeing a sleek 77W sitting there at sunrise and an A330 taxi past us while sitting at the gate really did it for me.

It looks great on the 787 as well. There's an even better picture of the AA 787 in the thread in which photos of it were first leaked.

Really has nothing to do with this. I have it on good authority that the training flights are largely chosen where there are minimal landing fees, not much other traffic, and a decent size runway. Plus, it's easier to coordinate with ATC when you're using a standard departure route to get out of the Metroplex enroute to GGG, as opposed to requesting weird altitude/heading assignments for a quick hop to AFW.

But other than aviation/travel enthusiasts, does anyone else really even care about facing forward while flying? I can't imagine that it's even a noticeable difference for more than 10-15% of a typical international flight, and is it honestly that uncomfortable?

Just speaking for myself, my aviation enthusiast status has nothing to do with the fact that I hate to be sitting facing backward when traveling - on trains too!

I've actually tried it out on the current AA flagship suite product on the 772 (it has a companion seat in the suite) and I just didn't feel comfortable flying "backwards" at all.

I think the AA livery looks fantastic on the 788. With its clean lettering and font, and nice silvery color, plus interesting tail design... it all works perfectly with the super modern and clean lines of the 788. Congrats to AA. Looking forward to flying on one of these someday....

The first flight? AA will be testing it domestically for sometime before they send it international. Supposedly it's going to visit various stations in the system and do hub to hub routes for crew familiarization.

With first flight this week, when should AA's first 787 be delivered? More importantly, when will the 787 get loaded into the reservation system, presumably for DFW-ORD or other hub-to-hub flights?

You are correct. GGG isn't charging landing fee's, and a 10,000Ft runway helps. Its a lot easier to get in and out of GGG and do touch-and-go's as well here than the congested metroplex.

They brought the new Airbus's to GGG as well last year for a few months, so i see the training to continue here for a while.

Quoting ANITIX87 (Reply 17):
Have you seen the tail up close? The amount of detail on it is incredible, it really makes you appreciate the work and consideration that went into the design. I, personally, LOVE the new livery, though I'll admit it took some time and it really took a good look at the tail.

The tail is the striking part of the livery. At night, lit up, it is really stunning. If you are lucky enough to be right underneath it and look up at it, you will see it has orange and a beautiful mesh of colors in it. I am not sure I will ever get used to the dreary grey American and the new "eagle". But as far as being the worst, would disagree on this completely. United wins it...especially when I think of the last beautiful pre-merger UA paint scheme.
But back on topic. I am looking forward to working the 787.

The 787 is a beautiful aircraft... not in my top three, but still beautiful.

I'm still not a fan of the SCREAMING REDNECK livery. And yes, I've seen it in person and in different light two tweaks could help it: 1) a metallic paint vs the dull battleship gray; 2) not extending the stripes onto the fuselage.

It will be interesting to see how AA deploys this aircraft type in its network and if it provides them with a competitive advantage and to whose detriment. Now that the U.S. is down to the big three things will be interesting over the next several years.

That was the date for contractual delivery. Fly away can occur anytime after, Like for example, the Etihad 787 was contractually delivered on the 31st of December 2014 and flew away on the 3rd of January.

1. It is metallic paint. Look at it when you walk onboard. It's very similar silver metallic like on cars.
But like cars, it can look drab on cloudy days.

2. I'm pretty 'sensitive' to screaming redneck stuff, being a true born yank......and I don't think this screams redneck, at all. It's a nice, art deco take on our flag.

3. I would agree. They could truncate the flag design to the tail only. Take away a couple blue stripes, keep it off the body, it would be more subtle [relatively speaking] and less weird, with the bottom stripes bubbling over the lower body.

I wonder if AA got the idea for extending the striping onto the fuselage from BA. If you look at the stylized Union Jack on the tail, the red extends onto the fuselage. I like the BA tail design, but I've thought it would look better, if the paint job didn't extend onto the fuselage.

Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.
