Aegean Airlines Launches LCA-TLV As Time Ticks @CY

Thu Jan 08, 2015 8:16 pm

Aegean Airlines announced today that it will launch a new route LCA-TLV and resume LCA-IEV. This comes as the final weeks of CY are expected and both A3 and FR have sought Cypriot licenses. Although A3 have said they maybe interested in CY until they lock the gates they seem to be going ahead with setting up shop at LCA.

Aegean to operate daily Larnaca-Tel Aviv flights
Aegean Airlines said on Thursday it was starting daily flights from Larnaca to Tel Aviv from the end of March and was resuming flights to Kiev in Ukraine at the same time.
The flights will be operated using the Airbus A320. It is the first time the company will be connecting Larnaca to Tel Aviv. The flights will run seven days a week.

I'm surprised CY has held on so long. From other sites the employees are disinterested and are just counting the days till shut down.

Cypriot media has reported that tonight's flight to/from Athens might be the airline's last one as the European Commission intends on announcing its decision either tonight or tomorrow morning.

These double standards are quite disgusting. You have Malév and Cyprus Airways which were forced into bankruptcy but then airlines such as airBaltic or Adria were saved. Then again, I should not be surprised about Adria, after all, they needed to be saved so that they can feed Lufthansa's hub in Munich.

Seems they were right and it was no surprise.

My post was deleted because the moderator got confused, or simply didn't read the post properly. In the other thread I posted that Aegean will be launching three weekly flights from RHO to Larnaca starting from June 15. They will be operated by an A320 that will be based in Rhodes.

Also, looking at their current schedule to TLV seems like they will offer convenient connections to their future network out of Cyprus. In addition to that, Athens will be increased to six daily flights with the additional departure from Larnaca being added at 20.55. One major advantage to this Athens-Larnaca set up is that Aegean offers connections via Athens on days when there are no flights via Larnaca.

In other news, Aegean's seventh (out of 8) A321 has been painted in Birmingham and should be delivered soon. It was an ex-Monarch bird.

A little bit off topic OA260 but I just saw that A3 is going to issue a RFP for the first A320 replacement in 2015 to both A and B. Do you see them going for the MAX? I d love your input on this, or anyone who knows anything on this of course

I hope they stick to Airbus, their livery doesn't look that great on the Boeing aircraft.

Speaking of Aegean, a friend of mine flew on one of their newest A320s and he said that on the inside it looked more than fantastic with the new seats and so on.

Well hard to know but I think they should stick to an Airbus fleet. Of course they have had B in the past but at the end of the day it will come down to economics and what A3 can get the best deal on.

I actually think it would look good.

As expected A3 have put on sale their new routes to LHR and CDG from LCA.

LCA-LHR 16.40 19.40
LHR-LCA 20.45 03.15

LCA-CDG 12.50 16.30
CDG-LCA 17.20 22.20

I think CDG will work better than LHR due to timings but we shall see.

Greece's Aegean phases out last A319s

Aegean Airlines (A3, Athens Int'l) has phased out its last two remaining A319-100s with SX-DGF (cn 2468) and SX-OAF (cn 3895) having now been returned to their respective lessors.

CDG will offer great connections onward to Tel Aviv. London Heathrow will offer connections from Beirut.

I guess what can't be routed via Larnaca will just go via Athens. Pretty smart plan.

Aegean Airlines: Presented the strategic development plan in Cyprus

Specifically, in the summer the company timetable from April 2015, significantly enhanced the frequency between Greece and Cyprus to the destinations of Athens and Thessaloniki and initiates the connection Athens and Paphos. The program included and direct connections to Heraklion and Rhodes, while July and August there will be direct connections to Mykonos and Santorini. Total will take place daily 8-9 flights connecting with destinations.

In the company's design placed great emphasis on Cyprus and Western Europe, since part of five major destinations. London-Heathrow, Paris, Munich, Rome and Milan.

http://news.in.gr/economy/article/?aid=1231377029

Pretty significant expansion. Also a status match for former CY FF members with 50% more miles for all direct routes flown from LCA in 2015.

Aegean loaded 3 additional mid-day frequencies so the route is now up to 10 weekly.
This move is probably meant to increase the utilisation of the additional aircraft that will be based in Larnaca following today's announcements.

Which route are you referring to?

From the summer season Aegean will increase Larnaca-Thessaloniki flights to 11 weekly. Daily departures at 08.40 and 19.00 departure on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

LCA-TLV, which is the subject of this thread. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Edit: I had a look again now, they changed the schedules again. The evening frequency is now down to 4 weekly and they are adding the 3 weekly mid-day frequencies so they will operate a split schedule. So total still 7.

AEGEAN, Greece’s largest airline and a Star Alliance member, is to launch a new direct route from the UK to Larnaca, Cyprus and Heraklion, Crete. The flights to Larnaca will depart from Heathrow airport daily as of March 29th, 2015 while the flights to Heraklion will be departing from Gatwick airport as of June 21st, 2015 with up to 6 flights a week. AEGEAN have also announced services to Beirut from Larnaca.

Flight details

Larnaca – Beirut 3 times per week
A3776 LCA1315 – 1400BEY 320 x247
A3777 BEY1450 – 1535LCA 320 x247

This compliments MEA's daily service on the route which utilises A320s, A321s during winter with intermittent A330 operations during the summer

Seems like Aegean is after the London passengers from both Beirut and Tel Aviv. Especially Beirut as it's the only connection available via Larnaca (return has to be via Athens).

So does anyone know if the LCA-BEY flight is operating under an EU-Lebanon open skies agreement, or a special exemption from the Lebanese government? It can't be under the Cyprus - Lebanon bilateral (if that still exists) as Aegean so far has only its Greek AOC.

Like 3 years ago, A3 also announced LCA-BEY, I bought the tickets but it was later cancelled right before its launch. Got my refund right. Some said MEA and CY were behind the cancellation as it is a quite profitable route for both.
But the situation is a little different at present, as CY is bankrupt and just maybe Cyprus won't let ME control the whole market.
