DL Flight With 2 Pax

Tue Jan 13, 2015 4:13 pm

I guess this was a re-positioning flight? What an experience. I've been on a few planes with very light loads, but nothing like this.

If you read your linked article, it says the flight was badly delayed and most of the passengers had been rebooked on other flights.

One of the routes I fly is Entebbe-Nairobi-Schipol, and the second leg of that has always been a Kenya Airways 777 of some description.

It is indeed usually light, between 40 - 60 people onboard in all sections, but the last time I flew it there were 18 of us passengers onboard. On a 777-300ER.

 Wow!

I read the article. At the end it states: "Often times when planes fly with a small number of passengers it's because the plane itself is needed in the destination city for a later flight."

I was thinking that maybe this was a re-positioning flight. Note the "?" at the end of "I guess this was a re-positioning flight?" in the original post.

Flew out of BNA last year and while awaiting my flight I noticed a door open and a plane headed to ATL about ready to leave at the next gate. Wandered over and asked. It was four hours delayed. Everyone had gone on other flights and I was allowed to hop aboard and go to ATL about an hour early. One other person aboard. Both of us got the battlefield!

Many years ago, in 1978 to be exact, I flew Sabena from Warsaw to Brussels on a 737 where I was one of 2 passengers - we were outnumbered by the FAs! Deep wintertime, evening flight

As we boarded, we were invited by the FAs to sit in the first row (we were strangers to each other to begin with), and then we had a very comfortable flight, with excellent and friendly service that was always on hand to supply whatever either of us wanted.

I don't get service on flights like that today, squeezed into ever-tighter sardine cans with ever more pax. Yes, bring on the 380s all round!

I actually was the only passenger once on a 757 CLT-LAX in the summer of 2001, except for a uniformed pilot. Because of widespread thunderstorms that afternoon up and down the east coast, operations were a mess and this extra section basically created a wingtip situation, and they consolidated all pax onto the other flight. I asked the agent if I could take that one of course they said no but the pilot who was nearby said I could. I went to CPK which was next to our gate B10 at the time and assured the f/a's I wouldn't ask for anything but they ended up serving me drinks and one even sat with me and we talked for a long time. We arrived at LAX to a crowded terminal and all of the pax were already lined up to board their redeye flight back east as I walked off with 3 pilots and 5 f/a's on flight 8000 something. It looked like I chartered the 757 for myself.

Back in the 90s, myself and two coworkers went to ATL for a cargo class. On the last day of class, we got out early and started to check the screen for something that might be leaving earlier, back to SLC. Our scheduled flight didn't leave for another 3-4 hours. I saw a flight I didn't recognize on the screen and checked on it. It had been a mtc. delay and now was going non-stop to SLC as a ferry flight......we ran to the gate and found out that it had just been re-instated as a regular flight. The normal route was ATL-TUL-SLC-BIL, but they changed it to ATL-SLC-BIL. Just us and a full crew on board AND MEALS. The Captain even invited us into the cockpit during the flight. The F/As told us that if we needed something to call them....otherwise, they'd be in the back resting. BTW, it was a 737-200.

I guess I'll go with the flow... In '06 I flew a DL 772ER ATL-CDG, couldn't have been more than 30 people seated in the aft half of the plane. It was my first TATL flight, and it was awesome, let me tell you. As a stark contrast, flew back on a ~ 95% loaded DL 763ER (CDG-ATL).

Every other TATL since the the DL 763ER CDG-ATL, has been pretty much completely full. At least 95%. Evidently I was lucky on that first TATL.

Lowest load I ever experienced was on a DL 72S PIT-MCO with 7 passengers. Apparently (according to the crew) there was a mixup regarding the advertising of the flight. DL had announced that it was beginning a week later than it actually was. A great flight indeed. Not soul in the rear cabin and everyone with a seat pair to themselves in first.

Back in my cabin crew days, I once worked SMF-DEN, also with two passengers. There was a fourth f/a that was scheduled to deadhead but crew scheduling converted him to work. He must've pissed off somebody really bad at the crew desk!

Under the old rules the more FAs you activated the longer duty time they had...it may have been an operational issue.

I also know a f/a from Delta who worked a flight on Christmas Eve from BOS-FLL which was an L10 with ZERO passengers. This was not a ferry flight but a regularly scheduled passenger flight. The flight actually had reservations for a dozen or so people but they all no-showed, so the flight went out with 3 pilots, 8 flight attendants and no passengers lol

Summer only routes often have this happen. I can remember being on the last flight of the season into a holiday destination......only 4 pax out on a 156 seater B737.... they got a personal safety brief from me and on demand service......homeward sector was full of package holiday makers.

Years ago I flew a DL MD88 from KATL to KMLB. There were only 10 passengers and for whatever reason we were told it was weight and balance, they moved everyone to First Class. Pretty cool as this was years before the automatic Medallian upgrades!

PanAm (I think) 727, from MIA to New York in like 1980. A woman I was seeing and I were the only rev pax. A couple of nonrevs as well. Don't remember exactly why the flight was empty; delay maybe.

Had there been Twitter, and a bunch of morons reading Twitter, back then, I could have been famous!

I saw this story on Robin Meade (CNN Headline News) this morning. I guess they put the Twitter-er's story on because Robin is seen in a whole lot of airport waiting areas and in the breakfast areas of almost every hotel in the US; maybe they thought it would be interesting to their audience.

Sometimes the SFO GDPs get so bad that by the last time the last VX flight is able to depart bound for SFO (usually from LAS/SAN) every passenger has early showed on another delayed flight making the one they were originally booked on arrive completely empty. Pretty surreal when i first experienced it but now kind of expect it when the GDP get bad.

and then there were 2 of us Key West to Atlanta on a Delta Connection flight.

I flew a scheduled UA 727-200 service (early morning) to ORD (I think we flew from CLT) on New Years Day many years back. There were four of us booked so we were all upgraded to First and provided the full hot breakfast meal service.

In September 2001 (about two weeks after the WTC/Pentagon attacks) I flew on a UA 777-200ER from IAD to DEN. There were three of us in Business, nobody in First and maybe two dozen tops in Economy.

My example was a flight CPT-DUR about 4 years ago. We had about 10 pax on the 738. I said I was a private pilot and about 3 minutes later the hostess invited me and my colleague to the flight deck where we stayed until we arrived at the gate in Durban!

I think the irony of this making the newspaper is both the flight where I was the only passenger (minus the deadheading uniformed pilot) and another one I took with 4 pax total, I joked with my friend I was flying with on that one that if we crashed, it would not even make the news.

Had something like this in 1990 on a USAir flight from PHL to PHX. It was Labor Day, and there were a grand total of four passengers including myself. Pretty sure the only reason that we weren't rebooked was that they needed the aircraft for the return flight the next morning.

I've had two "low passenger count" flights.

The first was on TWA. I was returning from California to Boston, and they had just started up a new red-eye from LAX to BOS leaving at 11 PM. It was scheduled as an L-1011 (which is why I booked the flight since I had not been on an L-1011 before). But when I got to the airport, there was a B747-100 at the gate, repositioning to Boston for TW754. There were only 7 passengers in total on the flight. I just flipped up the arm-rests on the 4-in-a-row section of coach and slept the entire flight (there was no meal service given the hour).

The second was on Northeast Airlines. We had arrived at JFK from an international flight, and needed to get back to Boston. We had a res on National, but got held up in customs and missed it. So we went over to Northeast. The ticket agent told us the next flight was sold out in coach, but that FC was available. It was in the 70's, so the price for FC was only a few dollars more than coach. So we get on the plane (B727-200), and there are 8 of us in FC, with the entire coach section totally empty. Someone had screwed up the computer apparently and the flight showed as full when agents tried to book it, when in reality it was totally open.

Back when I worked for C8 at MKE often our last departure to MDW would be booked to zero on the Saab 340. A lot of times I would ride down and back (it was the same crew returning to MKE to overnight) as "ballast". I would have to sit in the back for takeoff and landing, but in cruise I would sometimes get to sit in the jumpseat. Amazing views of downtown Chicago on that flight

1993: last DL Shuttle from BOS to LGA on a Friday night. Two colleagues and I plus one other man (who sat towards the rear of the plane   ) had a 727 all to ourselves!

Anyone remember the Doris Day film "That Touch of Mink" when she's the only passenger on a Pan Am flight to Bermuda?

That's sort of what it felt like!

Dare I mention my experience on Independence Air?

I'll mention it anyway: flew it back when they juuust started operations. How could I refuse a $50 o/w ticket?! Flew it on JFK-IAD on their CRJ-200. Maybe 10 people on their flight, max. The flight attendants were super nice and I liked their inflight announcements. Very laid back. Disappointed but not surprised they're gone

My favorite was a Saudia 747-300, n/s from Jeddah to New York on Halloween. 28 people! I have to say, Saudia was great if you liked flying private but wanted to pay an economy class fare.

Outside of school holidays, flights on Saudia to Europe and North America were extremely empty.

I've had a few flights with very small numbers of passengers. A US PDX-PHX flight with only 4 of us (excellent service!), a great KL AMS-MSP 747 in between christmas and new year several years ago where every passenger had at least 3 seats to themselves. CO, IAH-LHR, probably around 2006 They had a very late night departure (almost midnight??) when IIRC there was no more than a couple of dozen on board a 762. Strangest was probably LHR-PHL on US not too long after the service launched, there were so few on board that the crew had to ask people to move forward for weight and balance issues....now, i have had that on plenty of Q300 flights but never on an A330!

In the days before deregulation an early morning flight with only a few passengers was common. I spent many an hour as a teenager flying around in aircraft with only 2 or 3 passengers. I miss those days when flying was something to look forward to.

Once not too long ago...

AR, AEP-MDZ, 737-700

I was the only passenger in F, there were 10 passengers in Y.

The most memorable thing is that no matter I was the only one in F, and the low count in the back, the FA in the F cabin was among the most sour, crappiest, angry-looking, mean and rude FA I have encountered flying AR over the years. At one point it really became funny. I mean, there is only 1 passenger, how bad can you be? The service was, of course, likewise.

I kept wondering how he would fare if the flight were full...

In 1998 I was booked on an UA flight LAX-IAD (connecting to AMS). Departure was scheduled at 08:00am. Due to circumstances I arrived ridiculously at LAX and while checking in for my flight, the UA employee informed that UA started an earlier flight to IAD that week and she could also put me on that flight. LAX is not the funnest airport to spend many hours, so I gladly accepted.
It turned out my compagnion for that trip and I together with 3 others were the only passengers on that A320 flight. There were litteraly more crew then passengers on board
Most comfortable flight I've ever had in economy class

I was commuting home and flew out of IGM to LAS when Great Lakes ran that route. Was the only passenger on that plane and was seated in the back for weight balance. Very nice crew that left the cockpit door open for the entire flight. This was in 2010.

A few years ago I had a domestic flight in Finland on a Golden Air Saab340 with only 3 pax onboard. There was 1 FA, and the funny detail was that even though the FA must have realised for sure that every passenger was a Finnish speaker, she made all announcements and security briefings in Finnish, Swedish and English
