G-LCYT was flown up to nearly the Faroe Islands, circled for a couple of hours and appears to be returning to Glasgow in the middle of the night. Can anyone tell me the reason for this?

I've spotted this on flightradar. BA Cityflyer ERJ-190
G-LCYT was flown up to nearly the Faroe Islands, circled for a couple of hours and appears to be returning to Glasgow in the middle of the night. Can anyone tell me the reason for this?

Hmm may be a glitch. Ive seen "Skymark A333's" flying in circles in the SAN flight path, supposedly enroute from TIJ to FUK. Always confused me. FR24 can throw some weird things at us

This is the Aurora Flight. It's an amazing experience, they turn off all the lights onboard (inc Nav Lights). It's like flying in outer space!

FYI this flight is scheduled to leave edinburgh at 21.00 tonight. Departs edinburgh, arrives edinburgh. This must be one of few commercially sceduled A-A flights in the world!?

I saw this flight last night and wondered what it was about, that answers that question then!
I actually saw a TOM 757 carry out a similar flight during the summer though from MAN, went to the same area and flew a very similar flight route and then went back to MAN. Didn't think the aurora was visible during the summer!

Living in Canada, I have had many opportunities during the year to view the Northern Lights in the province of Alberta. However, my favourite viewing was driving 15 kms North of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (as suggested by the hotel staff). The Northern Lights were early in the season, so not as colourful, but were swirling and stretched across the sky as far as the eye could see. There were many tour bus operators that took Japanese tourists a bit farther North to view the Lights... a fertility enhancer in Japanese culture!
To be able to witness the same thing while FLYING would be an ultimate experience. For those in the UK, I would highly recommend the experience (while jealously viewing the Northern Lights from the ground)!

QF do some Antarctic flights, the most famous one being NYE leaving from SYD returning to SYD. They also do them from BNE/MEL/PER IIRC. But yes, extremely rare.

BA run a full day's 'Flying with Confidence' course for potential passengers with a fear of flying. The ground courses run in the British Isles end with a short flight. There were five such flights last year out of LON, four out of LHR, one out of LGW:
2 Feb 14: LHR-LHR (BA9202C) operated by 320 G-EUUT.
22 Mar 14: LGW-LGW (BA8548) operated by 319 G-DBCE.
17 May 14: LHR-LHR (BA9202C) operated by 319 G-EUPB.
11 Oct 14: LHR-LHR 42 minute flight (BA9230C) operated by 319 G-EUPG.
29 Nov 14: LHR-LHR (BA9230C) operated by 319 G-EUPD.
I am not sure when they started but believe they have been operating for around 25 years.
BA also operate 'Flying with Confidence' courses out at DUB, EDI and GLA. They run similar ground-only courses without a flight at DXB and JFK.
I only have historic data for relatively recent LON courses / flights. But here are the dates of the planned courses over the coming months:
LGW: 31 Jan 15
LHR: 7 Mar 15
DXB: 14 Mar 15 (with no flight)
DUB: 28 Mar 15
JFK: 18 Apr 15 (with no flight)
EDI: 16 May 15

So it is actually 28 years since the courses started and over 40,000 with a fear of flying have participated.
Note that in addition to the course locations I detailed in Reply 12 there is a course (without a flight) at JNB.
