Rfid In Commercial Aviation

Wed Jan 14, 2015 11:13 pm

I noticed RFID embedded on on my bag tags from LAS recently and am curious as to uses of RFID in aviation.

I found a thread on the subject from 2008: Are Most Airlines Using Rfid For Bagagge Handling? (by Qwame Oct 11 2008 in Civil Aviation)

It's interesting to compare and contrast the potential of the then emerging aviation industry technology in 2008 and it's practical use today. Has it gained widespread adoption or are airlines continuing to rely on legacy barcode systems for baggage tracking? What about other uses outside of bag handing? How else are airlines using RFID today?

DL uses RFID to track position and expiration date of cabin oxygen generators and numerous other pieces of cabin emergency equipment.

Qantas use RFID to track lifejackets, oxygen equipment, iPads and so on in their cabins.

Additionally, for some years now they have been distributing RFID baggage tags to customers that eliminate the paper tags completely on domestic flights between major centres:

My understanding is that most of the carriers in the USA are studying the possibility of changing from a bar code only bag tag to a bar code and RFID bag tag to make it easier to scan and verify bag and cargo locations.
