Did SJC Ever Have Direct Flights To Europe?

Sat Jan 17, 2015 5:12 pm

Title says it all: was there ever a direct - without plane change - connection between San Jose CA and an airport in Europe? Can't think of any, but wanted to check here on the forum.

For a short time AA operated San Jose Paris flights when they had a hub there. Not sure what Paris airport was used.

Edit:

AA operated AA112 SJC-CDG with a 763.

Yes, AA operated SJCCDG. The flight was started in the summer of 2001 and after 09/11, well, it was short lived after that.

Before the repeal of Bermuda II, AA wanted to operate SJC-London, but never got the authority to do so.

AA started SJC-CDG on the same day as SJC-TPE, and ended each on the same day. They went from about 4/2001 to 10/2001 IIRC. It was about six months.

My understanding was AA was about to start SJC-LGW and had a schedule already set for it.

I was booked on AA's SJC-CDG on 9/12/2001. Needless to say, the flight got cancelled (the airspace was still closed).

1 April 2001 - both routes were, for obvious reasons, very short lived (less than six months).

AA had proposed a schedule, but didn't actually have one "set" in the sense that it was on sale. As already said - AA applied with the DoT for SJC-LGW authority on 20 April 1998 with the following prospective schedule:

SJC 1600 1010+ LGW
LGW 1145 1435 SJC

AA's application was ultimately unsuccessful, as Continental's competing proposal to restore CLE as a designated gateway for nonstop service to LGW was approved instead, with AA's SJC-LGW route designated as the backup. The route was, of course, never started.

Interesting to note that STN tried *really* hard to get that flight.

They also tried again in 2007, with the Media buzzing that MaxJet would do STN-SJC, despite it never coming to fruition.

Would for example LHR-SJC work today for example with B787? Please don't turn this into slot discussion. BA has made LHR-AUS work so could this same happen with SJC? I know there are other maybe better destinations coming first, but just interested to know is SFO the reason for lack of international flights from SJC.

I recall speculation on here a while back about BA possibly running a 787 to SJC to offset capacity on the Bay Area-LHR route after the 747-436's were retired and smaller aircraft were used at SFO, but that talk went away after BA announced an upgauge to the A380 at SFO. So, now I have no idea how practical it would be. LHR is a big destination from the Bay Area, and much of the population base is closer to SJC (and OAK, for that matter) than to SFO, so I imagine it would work...

It is interesting to see the two jumbo jets nose to nose, where one says 767 Luxury Liner and the 777 says nothing. The 777 was the first plane delivered to American with the downgraded interior.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't AA introduce lie-flat seating on the 777s in the 2000-2001 timeframe? I remember them having a big event at SJC where they were showing off the new suites.

Yes they did, and they are swivel seats too, and American is still flying them that way although they have started to redo the interior on the 772s. 3 class Luxury Liner interiors prior to that had supple leather and lambswool seats in both First and Business. The downgraded interior was cloth seats with leather headrests, the exact same as in coach. The previous Luxury Liner flagship First seats were almost lie flat, but I believe they were wider.

Here is the Luxury Liner interior which first disappeared with the delivery of the 772 approximately 15 years ago and when it was removed from the side of the airplane. The exterior is of a 767 but the interior I believe is an MD-11. This is from Home Alone 2 in 1991. Kevin is in coach but his parents 2 mins later you will see in Business Class where the seats while not lie flat ironing boards like today, were actually wide, and made of real leather and lambswool and IMO the feeling is luxury whereas today it is more utilitarian. Also, this is when AA had 3 classes on all transoceanic widebodies, although they flew them in select domestic markets too. The First Class seats are even wider than what is shown here in Business. IMO even coach feels somewhat luxurious, much different than the 10 abreast 77W today with shrunken seats compensated by a sea of large PTVs which while a nice feature makes the cabin feel even more cramped.
