United To Order 777-300ER?

Mon Jan 19, 2015 10:25 pm

According to Bloomberg, this order is in the works. Anyone else hear of this?

Well, I did - just now, but you beat me to posting it!

Great news for UAL and for Boeing too; this will help Boeing to bridge the gap until the 777X enters service; wonder if Boeing might be able to tempt UAL to take some -9Xs as well?

What does this replace, I wonder? 747-400s? (I thought the A350-1000 was to replace the 744s, though?)

Ten 777-300ER frames to retire the 10 oldest 747-400s in the near term, leaving 15 A350-1000s to handle the rest and 20 A350-1000s to up-gauge 777-200ER routes.

As UA FF I'm kinda excited by this, but I also fear it means the beginning of 10 abreast Y seating, like at AA

I have a hunch this could be a 777-300ER/777X split order, if not, eventually lead to a 777X order.

I wonder what this means for a potential UA 777X order.

Any ideas on first deliveries?

Any potential routes? IAH-GIG could use a capacity boost!

If true, congratulations to both parties! I'm sure UA will get a very good price on these frames, although sadly (for passenger comfort) I suspect Y will be 10-across

My apologies, I can't believe i mixed up GIG and GRU. Also, with oil prices low (granted it won't always be this low but still...), will an upgrade in capacity still be feasible?

I don't get it. They already have a bunch of A35Js on order. Why add yet another brand-new subtype? Why not order more A35Js?

They don't need more A350-1000s.

Just as I assumed. UA will need the 777 going ahead, not because of passenger count, but payload. The A350-1000 is inferior to the 777-300ER in terms of payload.

Could they mean they want to drop the A350 order? It would be their only Airbus plane after the A32X are gone, and IMO, its a waste to have pilots qualified for a sub fleet of planes that aren't similar to your fleet in any way shape or form

Very, very, very unlikely.

I fully believe this order is down to availability tied to a desire to accelerate the 747-400 retirement.

No no no!

The A350-1000 is going to be terrific for UA. They'd be wise to keep them.

Sure, they're an Airbus in a mostly Boeing fleet, and the A320s will be leaving soon, but let's not forget that the A321neoLR could be in UA's future too.

But unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you are) this means the end of the A350-1000 as a flagship at UA.

The timing on this seems very weird. 5+ years ago would have been a much better time to order them, or why not wait for any of the next gen options as delivery dates aren't that far off....

Haven't heard of anything that would make them skip the A350, on either side of the deal.

Ten 777Ws really isn't a very big increment of capacity for a carrier with the intercon flying of United.

I hope not... Their current 777-200s are only 9 abreast. I find it so unfortunate and unappealing when airlines order a new aircraft such as 777-300ER and then completely overlook the "comfort" aspect that is supposed to be offered on the aircraft and cram their passengers in with 3-4-3 seating in economy. I guess only time will tell though

Sydney, here comes the UA 777-300ER to more effectively take on Qantas, Virgin Australia, Delta and to a much lesser extent, Hawaiian and Air New Zealand!

I'm willing to bet that the 777X is involved in this deal. 10 isn't a big fleet, you're right.

What if UA ordered 10 777-300ERs, which is helping keep the current 777 line open, and in return, were given heavy discounts for the 777X?

Boeing needs a few more orders to keep the line humming along until the 777X comes online, so they cut UA a sweetheart deal ????

I've actually been waiting for a couple of announcments like this, Boeing just selling the planes at near cost to pull an airline or two off the fence, keep the line going and keep the airline a Boeing customer.

For UA the 35J will be a great aircraft, but that's still a few years away.

That's another puzzler. Maybe Boeing just gave them an exceptionally good deal and perhaps this is a bit of greasing the rails for a 77X order.

When do they get their first tranche of A350-1000s? 2019? 2020? Later?

I expect Boeing can get them 777-300ERs this year or next.

And five years ago they were investing in a hard product upgrade for the 747-400 which they had to recover.

I've seen threads that say the 747-400 fleet has turned into a bit of a "Hangar Queen" and the fleet was consolidated at SFO to improve maintenance and availability, so if these threads are true, perhaps UA had changed their mind on holding on to the 747-400 until next decade and want to start shedding them ASAP.

So in general we will have the 3 major US carriers with the following fleet (excluding B763s + B757s) (current orders only + this one)

UA : average 120-150 Boeing WBs(B777,B787) + 35 Airbus WBs (A350)
AA/US: average 90-110 Boeing WBs(B777,B787) + 35-45 Airbus WBs (A330,A350)
DL: average 25-35 Boeing WBs(B777,B787) + 80-90 Airbus WBs(A330,A330neo,A350)

not counting options + including possible retirments on the early B777s + A330s

NB ofc is another story

LoL, they aren't dropping the 35J order. UA could park the 10 777A frames that are three class or they could park the 744s closest to a D check or a combination. Boeing could be doing a sweet deal on the 10 77W to entre to the 777-9X for UA (an order of 10 to 20 perhaps) but no bigger.

Short term, the 77W keeps humming and UA picks up some great birds.

UA's oldest 9 744s are all over 23-25 years old. They need to replaced soon whether they are inefficient or not. I see this is an opportunity to get a good deal to modernize a part of the UA fleet and "spread out" the fleet replacement.

AA has a F product aboard their B77W. They certaintly did not "ditch" F. They did however, introduce the excellent new herringbone J seats on the B77W. They, of course, introduced a plan to cut F from everything but the B77W and A321T, but they have not completely "ditched" F.

Yes, but it comes down to price and opportunity. UA was not exactly very good shape in 2010. Today Boeing has tempted them enough to take a few orders with relative rapid delivery.

Ouch! Where did Kaitak's thread go? Deleted I guess as there were two threads on the same topic.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense for United to deploy the 777-300ER to Sydney. They have received bucket loads of positive press over the 'latest technology' Dreamliner flights into Melbourne, but fly the comparatively old 777-200ERs into Sydney from LAX and SFO, as has been pointed out. There have been maintenance and operational issues (minor) since the 777s took over Sydney from the 747s, and United arguably didn't have the best reputation here anyway. In one fell swoop, United could change all that with shiny new 777-300ERs with Dreamliner-style technology and cabins. And wow, they need that especially if Qantas, as speculated, returns to the SFO route as it's a monopoly for United ATM.
Cheers,

They will go to SFO or ORD. ORD has a 777 base and 10 could do NRT, PVG, BJS, HKG, and FRA. This would keep the 744s at SFO. Just my 2 cents.

Interesting that we now have a new US Carrier with a 77W. I wonder if DL is soon to follow with an order since prices now are surely lower.

Nope. I think we all assumed DL would order the 777-300ER, but then came along the A350-900, not to mention the "frequncy over size" approach.

DL will NOT get the 777-300ER and they will NOT get the 777X. They could go A35J in a few years, but that's it.

Would these new 777's or could they shift other 777's and he A350's for flights to Japan, China from EWR or their other hubs? The greater freight capacity of some 777's over the 350 may be critical as to flights from China and Japan.

My vote is EWR. Allows expansion w.o new slots. EWR > HKG, PVG, NRT, PEK, and BOM. 10 Units.

Why not just add first?

Why not add more C class that actually sells? Per UA its paid F class occupancy is only in the 40% range.

John Rainey UA CFO only a few months ago said United did not see a three-class offering in its future.

Why not do something so it can sell?

I'm excited United looks to be ordering the 777-300ER, she will be a terrific addition to their international fleet. And after the last of the 744s have been retired to the desert, it will be nice to have a long-haul alternative to the A350s that will be delivered at the end of the decade. It is amazing that even today, considering the introduction of the 787 and 350, the -300ER is still a competitive airframe. For a big fan of the 77W, that is great news. What a plane!
I love dem planes....

Nice image--hope they keep the wave cheatline. At first glance I thought they had adopted a metallic silver scheme on the upper half; no wouldn't THAT have bee something!

Nope. I think we all assumed DL would order the 777-300ER, but then came along the A350-900, not to mention the "frequncy over size" approach.

DL will NOT get the 777-300ER and they will NOT get the 777X. They could go A35J in a few years, but that's it.

You seem pretty confident in that assertion. If just ten makes sense for UA with 787s on property and A350s on order, some tranche of 77Ws can make sense for DL. Price is important; so are long-haul growth opportunities at lower oil prices even if markets don't expect those prices to last over the full aircraft life.

When AA and UA retire their 77Ws, that's when DL will go for it.

I posted this in what appears to be the other thread that disappeared. There was a picture sometime ago that showed a UA 77W in the current 787 scheme, would sure be nice to see if they order this plane.

IF UA does order the 77W, will it be a 777-324ER or 322ER?
