Further Continental European Airports To Close

Tue Jan 20, 2015 5:01 pm

The interesting thread on UK airports in jeopardy made me wonder which airports are endangered in Europe. Obviously, the death or demise of heavily subsidiesed ex-military airfields is nothing limited to the UK.

Germany has lots of military airfields due to its front line position in the cold war, so there are some endangered candidates:

1. Zweibrücken: Will be closed, almost sure.
2. Memmingen: Under huge pressure.
3. Augsburg (never a military airfield): Died already years ago.

Some other candidates, which will likely survive, are HHN and NRN.

What about the rest of Europe? I can think of Reus and maybe even Girona which might be under pressure? Any other candidates?

My nomination: Altenburg (in FR speak: Leipzig–Altenburg Airport) - used to have FR services but they stopped in 2011(?) since then has had no scheduled service and is a fairly remote location with LEJ to the North, DRS to the East and ERF to the West.
Flown in: A20N,A21N,A30B,A306,A310,A319,A320,A321,A332,A333,A343,A346,A359,A388,BA11,BU31,(..56 more types..),VC10,WESX

A decision to close GSE have already been taken and the future BMA is also uncertain.
It won't be closed in the nearest future but I don't think it will be around in 15 years from now.

Aren't they both getting Sbahn/Regional Train links too?

Also VST have an uncertain future due to economic reasons. The Political majority in Västerås
all have different opinions.

That's a shame. went there last December. Nice little airport, quick bus in to town, which is lovely btw. Had a nice weekend there.

But Memmingen is not really underserved so it can only mean Wizz Air and Ryanair are paying next to nothing. Makes me wonder what would become of their flights if the airport was closed. What could be the most logical alternative airport?
