Is it just a one off though ? The wording seems to suggest so.

Don't get too excited. As far as I am aware it's just a one off SYD-PER-IST return flight due to the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli.

To begin April 21st. Interesting new route for QF and IST!

AFAIK its a "one off" flight in support of the Centenary of Gallipoli commemorations on 25/4/15.

The timing of the flight fits in perfectly with the ANZAC flight that has been planned for ages. I just thought it was not to IST but to a different airport when first announced???

Ooops, I think you're right, I am pretty sure it is in to Sabiha Gökçen ( SAW ) rather than the main Istanbul airport.

Thanks for confirming - I just forgot the name / code of the other airport in Istanbul.

Sydney - Istanbul is over 9,000 miles so the plane wouldn't have the legs anyway...

Also, maybe to pick up some people from the West Coast attending but I could be wrong...

Yes, a technical stop needs to be made somewhere, so PER makes a good choice given there will be some passengers flying ex-PER.

SIN/BKK would've been a better technical stop as the PER-IST leg is 7400 miles (which is equivalent to SYD-DXB) so its a good thing that cargo/payload is not essential for this one flight. But as above, it makes sense to pick up Ex-PER passengers along the way rather than having them backtrack to SYD.

It's definitely available to book via qantas.com - not sure if that helps, but it does eliminate closed charter.

For the 99.9% of Anetters who don't follow the Australian Aviation thread regularily, the posting of the OP's thread is informative and interesting and serves the purpose of informing the community that this incredible flight is taking place. No one wants to dig through 202 replies to find a nugget of information on this commemerative flight.

They might have negotiated a big group booking/commitment (ie 200 people) and are now just selling the leftover seats in order to fill the plane up.

I doubt that they would have scheduled something like this without a firm commitment from somebody somewhere (IIRC they did the same for the World Cup in Brazil last year, and there was speculation that SYD-YVR could be a similar arrangement).

Yes it was filed as a charter with authorities in Turkey (posted in Turkish thread a bit back), more specifically as a 'scheduled charter'

Loading in GDS not that odd. Carriers like Condor, Monarch, etc often load charter series in GDS as well since seat only sales are possible by the carrier outside the organizers allocation.

I wonder if it will be on one of the six 747-400ERs that only QF operate or just one of QF's regular non-ER 747-400s?

Not that many or possibly any of the pax would care

I read somewhere else that the seat map that comes up through booking on qantas.com is the 'A380-style' B744. Which means either a -400ER or OJS, OJT or OJU.
