Credible Bomb Threat At ATL

Sat Jan 24, 2015 9:28 pm

Read this in the nees this afternoon:

4:17 p.m. Jan. 24 By Mike Morris / The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
“Credible” bomb threats were made Saturday against two flights bound for Atlanta, an airport spokesman said.
The flights landed safely after being escorted into Atlanta by military fighter jets.
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport spokesman Reese McCrainie told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at 3 p.m. that both flights — Delta 1156 and Southwest 2492 — had landed and were sitting on a taxiway waiting to be swept by the Atlanta police Bomb Squad.

McCranie would not say how the threats were received, only that, “we believe the threats to be credible.”
Channel 2 Action News reported that the threats were made via Twitter.

FBI spokesman Stephen Emmett told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that NORAD scrambled military fighter jets to escort the two planes to Atlanta after the threats were made.
The passengers were being removed from the planes, and Runway 27L has been closed, McCranie said.
The Delta flight arrived from Portland, Ore., while the Southwest plane arrived from Milwaukee, Wisc.
Witnesses reported seeing multiple emergency vehicles on the tarmac, and the Federal Aviation Administration said just before 3 p.m. that departing flights were experiencing gate holds and delays of up to 30 minutes due to a bomb threat.

Apparently the threats were made from some twitter account name kingZortic. This story took a while to hit mainstream media, I must say.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Any and every threat should be taken seriously.

But credible?

Another keyboard warrior who thinks he can hide behind false IP addresses.
I'm sure the authorities will have him in no time.

What kind of info are passengers told in such a case? Seeing a couple fighter jets flank you (unless they lagged behind) would be a bit unnerving.

No idea what the passengers were told, but they were escorted to the ground by fighter jets, and held at remote parts of the airport (news said "a remote runway" ... my guess is one of the remote cargo pads ...) ...

Passengers were brought down via airstairs and bused to a fire station for screening (presumably the bags were also taken somewhere for screening) ...

Both flights were apparently deemed credible threats (hence the fighter escort), and have since been cleared after landing and inspections.

So far the news hasn't managed to catch up to anyone actually on either flight as they exit the airport.

As you can imagine, it's all over the local news here in ATL ...

(edit)

News has now caught up to passengers ... they didn't know what was going on until people with phones started getting text msgs, etc. After landing, they were told to turn off all electronic devices.

Inspections and Clearances took about 2 hours.

This is all via reporters; nobody has (apparently) yet been willing to actually speak on camera.

Probably the best is tell the passengers what is really going on, i.e. the KingZortic is after them and there is not much one can do

They were taken to the southernmost runway.

This link shows some screenshots of the Twitter exchanges between the person tweeting out the threats and the airlines themselves:

Hopefully the authorities catch up to this clown and make an example of them. This appears to be the second time this has happened in the past week involving a Twitter bomb threat, a Delta passenger plane, and a plane departing or arriving at ATL. This is the first one (which may have bred today's copycat):

The 'poster's' last tweet was "here they come, goodbye".

Whether or not it's an actual tweet with substance is worthy of a debate.

Hopefully they catch the twerp and make him and his parents (if he's underage) pay for the diversions and escorts..

I am curious why Twitter hasn't suspended the account yet - makes me wonder if the authorities are still trying to find the person.

In the 1980s, we were were getting ready to board a JFK - JED flight, a Saudia 747-300 and we were asked to leave the gate area. Then 1 member from each traveling party was asked to meet security (later my dad told me he was asked to identify our bags). After a few hour delay, we were permitted to board and flew safely to JED. Prior to boarding, the gate staff had told a few people that asked, that a bomb squad had come and searched the plane. The funniest bit, was that the lead gate agent to start the boarding process thanked everyone for cooperating in an orderly manner, and said the delay was due to a call received that stated "undesirable material" had been placed aboard the aircraft.

Apparently Twitter has told the DHS to get a court order to get account info. I am sorry, but this was an immediate threat that needed immediate reaction on the person who sent it so they could be taken into custody and charged, so should be exempt from such a requirement, most likely the FBI.

Hmm is there any legal basis by which one can be 'told' to turn off electronic devices after landing? And by that I mean: does this include after de-planing? What's next? Passengers told not to talk to each other during flight?

That's a very slippery slope - I agree that the situation was serious, but the planes made it to the ground and were inspected and no threat found.

It's extremely serious, and the person needs to be punished, but they need to follow our laws properly to obtain the approrpriate warrants..

Judges are available 24/7 for instances like this, and permission can be obtained, often verbally, in situations like this.

Remember - the more we compromise our laws and rights, the more the bad guys win.

Very true! If shortcuts in due process can be used against bad guys, they can also be used against you or your family.
Great Lakes, great life.
