AZ To Add 5 X B777's For Expansion...

Tue Feb 03, 2015 5:04 am

Hello All,

Just read news AZ will add 5 B777s to its existing fleet of 10 B777-200ER's. These will be 2 x B777-200ER's & 3 x B777-300ER's with the aircraft likely sourced from EY. The aircraft will be used for new services to PEK, PVG, ICN, MEX, & SFO. Deliveries to commence in 2016.

This certainly doesn't come as a surprise

Shame they aren't buying new 777's from Boeing to fill up the line. Does Boeing even have the option of a -200ER anymore?

Except, according to Airfleets, EY doesn't have any 77E in its fleet. I guess they'll be sourced from SQ or a lessor.

I believe the 77E is no longer offered.

The -200ER's will more than likely be sourced from the 2nd market with the last factory built -200ER delivered to OZ.

Quoting UA444 (Reply 4):
The 772 is still on offer if they wanted it.

I stand corrected.

Doubtful. SQ's 772ER are RR powered... all of AZ's are GE.
Doubt they'd switch engines for just two units.

Doubt it'll be from SQ as this would mean a new engine type for AZ, but you never know. I'll go with AF offloading a pair of 772ER's to AZ.

What about the 77Ws? Are any airlines currently getting rid of 77Ws?

Not that I can think of, perhaps AI could transfer their last 3 that seem have been ordered many years ago and are still on Boeing's order books. Would make sense to me.

What about the 77Ws?

Jet Airways still have 5 B77Ws for its three daily LHR rotations plus some regional flights, with its other 5 frames now with Etihad already. I'd say that's a pretty good source for those B77W frames gives the close EY-9W ties.

How many different airlines have used the 9W 77Ws now? TG, TK, EY (and I'm sure there's another - well, apart from 9W!)

Quoting ka (Reply 11):

I think they are looking to get rid of them, but two are leased and one owned, so it's really someone to take over those leases. I think they only have two leased, though.

They would probably be a very good source, being that they are quite new. Assuming KQ still thinks they are too big for its network, then this could be a very likely source.

EY have plenty of B777's and on order so I'm sure they would be prepared to off load to AZ considering they have B787s and A380s coming online.

If LATAM were offered a good deal with earlier 787 or 350 slots, they would offload their 77Ws in a heartbeat. They only want 767, 787 and 350 in their fleet.

PVG, ICN, PEK are 332 destinations. MEX, SFO and SCL will be 777.

Oh, thats new to me.  Wow! Why do they want to offload them? Can't they fill a 77W?

I agree with the others that AZ will only get GE powered 77Es. OS got their fifth from VN. So maybe thats a source as VN is getting 787s and A350s this year and their 777s will leave the fleet.

There are numerous discussions and apparently latest news is the up and coming additions to the fleet will be the following:

A330-200 x 3
B777-200LR x 3
B777-300ER x 2

EK will start to replace older 77Ws with new frames from next year on. Havent heard of anyone else in near future (next two years) but I am sure Jet Airways would like to sell some of their surplus 77Ws if the price is right.
But as said by others, partner EY is by far the most likely source AZ could get 77Ws from.

These B77Ls look to be the Air India birds ! The A332s might be the current wet leased units of 9W in EY's fleet or from Air Berlin itself.

That are old planes from the 777´s early days and likely candidates for parting-out. I read something like that on this forum.

Their oldest 77W is just 10 years old, I would think they'd start replacing their 773's which will be 13-16 years old next year. And they're still flying 77E's that are 16-18 years old.

It was reported by flight global, quoting the airline´s fleet plan. A 12-year lease is quite common and the first frames are due then next year. That the 77Es and 773s are kept longer surely must have to do with that those are far less desirable nowadays on the secondhand market and wont be easy to place. There are very few airlines which make use of the 773 so I expect many to last with their original operator until they are being scrapped. Btw EK has scrapped the first two 772s already, and also half of the 777s sold or retired so far by other airlines went to the breakers directly.

Assuming a 12 year lease, the first few airplanes won't come off lease until Mar/Apr of 2017 and probably will need a cabin refit meaning availability sometime thereafter. Time will tell.

Only their 777-200LRs; AI still have three (one of which they've just got back into the air after a long time on the ground!). They have however just taken three more 9W 77Ws, which I think were the three leased to TK until recently.

If EY has just taken these on, it suggests they have a need for them, over and above their own 77W fleet. I can't see them parting with their 77Ls, as they need these for ULH routes to the US.

There aren't many -200LRs around, but those who have them seem to want them!

Looking down the road, might AZ take some of the 778/9s that EY has on order?

I believe recent "77E" orders are really for derated 77L's. I've read somewhere - can't find a link now - that 77L is more efficient than 77E on trips of >1,500nm. Probably due to bigger wing = lower induced drag, higher FL.

Not sure what you mean by that, as you can't just order a 772LR and call it a 772ER. Way too different, in weight, capability, and price.

Maybe AZ could get 77Es from AM. AM will replace its GE-powered 77Es with 789s. AM has four in total; 2 were bought brand-new off the assembly plant and 2 are ex-RG birds.

MEX, SFO and SCL will be 777.

FCO-MEX will be 77E or 77W? It'd seem reasonable to me to start with the smaller -200ER, but I get the idea from several posts on this thread that even the 777-200ER might have trouble doing MEX-FCO with a full payload if it is warm/hot in MEX at the time of take off. Does anybody know if the specific model of 777 has been decided for MEX?
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

They have cancelled the order of the last pair that was supposed to deliver and had F removed from the existing birds, but are keeping the current C hardware, because the 77W is considered an interim solution. When the second batch of 77Ws was delivered to TAM, it was announced they would update the C product soon. The only reason they had kept the old C was because they had trouble with the manufacturer of the seats, forcing them to have it replaced. The replacement never came and now they are set to start being replaced in two or three years..
