They should have tried harder to get a Caravelle instead. The proto -10B ex Finnair was the last Caravelle flying in Congo til 2005, Waltair wanted to sell it, kept it flyworthy for a while for the Finns but they backed out.

According to Finnish media, the Finnish Aviation Museum is negotiating with the Kenyans to get the allegedly oldest DC-9-10(5Y-XXA) in regular service to the museum. Manufactured in 1965, the aircraft flew in AY colors between 1971-83(OH-LYD), hence the interest.

Thats would be great! Never flew on this specific type, the only DC-9 i flew was the DC9-14 back in the 90s when i must have been only 7 - 10 years old. I was flying KAJ-HEL-ZRH-GVA, I guess some winter holiday in Finland with the family.

Flying on the "Trash Ten" as it was lovingly called at NW was always pleasant. Very comfortable seating. Kind of like riding in a vintage 1965 Ford Mustang compared to a 2015 Tercel. Tercel is a great vehicle but just lacks the classic look and feel of the DC-9-10.

What happened to DC-9 #4? I thought it was the oldest in service and still in Africa??
|Quoting saleya22r (Reply 13):|
IIRC AY had replaced the -10 series already, might have been a -50 series plane or a MD..They were flying charters to the Alps then. In the 70s, the baby niner was AYs workhorse flying mainly domestic and Scandinavian routes. Some domestic routes were flown with Caravelles some with Convair Metropolitans when runways were too short for jets (TRE for example in those days).

The museum should try to get that one if its still fly able.

Is the plan to keep it flying? Could i get a ticket for it in finland? I would do so, trust me!
