All SFO arrivals and departures are currently using RWYs 19L and 19R. This is quite a rare occurrence I believe!

Indeed rare if all departures are using the 19s, including the full-weight departures. Are they?

Departures are now back to using 10L and 10R. CA986 (B773ER) just departed.

Nothing rare about landing on 19L& 19R when we have winds like today.

I just arrived on UA 1710 from Denver after a 3 1/2 delay. We arrived on 19L and boy was it a bumpy ride.

SFO did have 10L/10R a short while before switching back to 19s , UA838 did a go around, MU589 landed on 10s, along with a few other narrow body jets. they are doing 19s and 10s departure at the moment

Just looking at a map or aerial image, it's always struck me as quite odd the way SFO's runways are numbered. 19 L/R to me look like they are really oriented in a direction that would be more like 23 L/R. Yeah, I know it has to do with the magnetic compass stuff, but still, it seems the magnetic compass is really weird in that area.

Quite correct actually - the sectional charts for the Norcal area off the coast of San Francisco are marked 'magnetic disturbance of as much as 4 degrees exists at sea level in this vicinity'.
If you need someone to blame / throw a rock in the air / you'll hit someone guilty

This is not rare at all. Happens most time a strong cold front comes onshore and the winds come from the south. Even the heavies going to Europe will frequently use 19L for departure. But if the winds are this strong around midnight, the Asia flights will most likely be stuck till crosswinds die down for 10 departures.
An interesting twist today was when they ATC started arrivals on the 10s. That lasted all of 3 missed approaches .JetBlue 746, Delta 2049(who diverted to SMF) and United 838. They quickly switched back to the 19's for arrivals.

Is 1L/1R still used for ARRIVALS every now and then? About 15 years ago coming in TPE-SFO on UA when it was a morning arrival; blew me away coming in and landing on 1R ; this was a UA 747-400. Dont' recall crosswind component that day; was windy but not directly related to a storm system. Likely wasn't nice to the Milbrae folks on the approach end who rarely get an arrival (and one that early on a Sat AM)

Did winds dictate arrivals on the 10s?
Landed 19L last night after a 3.5 hour delay related to the GDP at SFO.

Doesn't happen very often but yes, it happens. In fact, it happened a few weeks ago, and it lasted all day.

They were used a few weeks back for an entire day. A nice treat. But still averages about 3 times a year they utilize the 1's for arrival.

Ya, they had shifted to around 110-100*, but by the time they got the arrivals lined up, shifted back to 190* and caused the missed approaches due to crosswind.

I just flew out of SFO (evening of 2/6) on Lufthansa to Munich. All departures were on the 19s, but for some reason our A340-600 was the only heavy that didn't use them. The rain was coming down so hard, and the wind was the most intense I've seen it in a while.
That said, the minute we took off, we hit incredible turbulence. I can't even describe it, it was beyond frightening getting tossed in every direction possible. The pilots had quite a bit to do, I'm sure. All the passengers were basically hugging their seats and we were getting thrown around like no tomorrow, complete with screams from some pax in the back. Glad it only lasted for like 5 minutes. But I would love to never experience something like that again.

Two days later and I'm still a bit adrenalized from our UA 1571 departure out of SFO on 2/6. SImilar to Aeroflot777's account, for us, the nose was barely off the ground when the gusts started the violent movements. As a passenger who travels frequently for work (millions of lifetime miles), the turbulence and reaction of the plane so close to the ground was extremely frightening (but obviously successful). Further at what definitely sounded like max power (from front cabin) the climb seemed slow and made me wonder if that was purposeful while they did some checks. Kept telling self that the pilots must actually enjoy the opportunity to use their skills, but at the same time had to question what are the limits. In the front of the back it was a white knuckler for a seasoned veteran. Heard a similar story from another road warrior on another flight to BOS that left just prior to ours. Would be interesting to hear from a pilot about what is standard for conditions like Friday vs non standard and especially one who flew out during the last storm.

SFO has again just switched to rwys 19R and 19L for departures as the winds are gusting from 29-35 knots!

Quite honestly? It sucks. I flew all over NorCal and RNO over the last few days and while I can assure we were always safe and within limits - it's exhausting. I did 9 legs in 2 days and it was interesting to hear people's comments as they were getting off that they were glad it was over - except we're just getting started
SFO is a handful landing on the 19's but OAK can be much worse. You are basically getting vectored over the Oakland Hills @ 2000' AGL with the winds ripping - the ride is no fun. The SFO arrivals are above us by a few thousand feet - it can definitely make a difference on the ride.
Trust me - boring is good

Realizing that pilot recognition is a bit challenging- the giggles of toddler parent reunions and etc are a long way from the locked flight deck, I'm certain plenty of others join me in sending a dose of appreciation your way.

The 19s are pretty rare. Especially if it's ALL departures.
We landed on 19R last night.
But my favorite 19 departure was back in 1997. On this day, I was supposed to take my first ever 777 ride from SFO to ORD. However, when I got to the gate I found that there had been an equipment substitution. A 744 was sitting there. It was the one and only time in my life I have been disappointed to fly a 744. Oh, and there were maybe 20 pax on the whole flight.
But we taxiied out to 19R for takeoff. The captain informed us that because of the weather, length of the runway, and noise considerations that we would be doing a "full-power" takeoff and would be making a sharp right turn immediately after. He set the brakes and the engines spun up. Then he released the brakes and I was thrown back into my seat so hard that I had to struggle to look out the window. We were off the ground in a bit over 30 seconds and the ground fell away as if someone had dropped it. It felt as if we were flying straight up. Then we banked at what must have been 30 degrees and whipped around to the north before throttling the engines back and resuming a more normal departure profile (that throttle-back felt like we were falling, too).
To be in a vehicle the size of a building that accelerates like a Ferrari is quite a thing.

Barney Captain, in conditions like this do you utilize the autoland to help with the workload or do you manually land in case of a microburst?
