Quoting SKC (Reply 203):
As mentioned earlier, N508 arrives PHX in about two hours from HOU on F41. Removal of all the SWA stuff, then ferries to TUS tomorrow (probable) morning. Engines will be dropped shortly thereafter.

Thanks for the information and it was good to have her back for the Holiday season and now she needs to rest from her labors and be a donor---I remain convinced that SWA will simply not paint any 500's

I just find this as a waste of money. We spent a lot of maintenance hours on this aircraft after it came out of the desert. Past due inspections, ageing aircraft inspections etc., etc.. I can't believe it was worth the cost?? Maybe I am being dumb but who knows??

As far as paint N471, I just don't know. I have said things that did come true but at the same time an equal amount that did not. As I said here and on another thread, if the aircraft looks like crap it will probably be repainted, from what I have seen it does not matter if it will be retired.

SXDFC: Thanks for keeping the list going. I can't wait to see the first 500 painted in the new colors. If it happens, don't know, I don't want to imply it will, we will see.

One thing that bugs me about this new paint...the silver stripe is metal flake??? I have no idea why. I was working on an elevator the other day and noticed it. Wow, that will be hard to match. N711HK and N713CB are in that same type of paint and you have to get a whole kit to touch up that paint, it is a gallon kit so quite wasteful.

Thank you! It has been in the new paint for quite some time, somehow it alluded my list.

I'd like to see that too.. With some of the -500s getting cabin refreshes perhaps it might just be possible after all.

IMHO they did a poor job with the retrojets. They're not even a real retrojet. The old colors had white trim around the windows along with the black anti-flash panel.

I just caught a brief glimpse of N7734H as it flew overhead my house, but I was unable to see the paint. Could this aircraft be in the new colours already?

It seems like CB's plane did have the white window surrounds, whereas HK's did not. I think you're correct about the black anti-flash however.

I don't know how I feel about the tails on the special livery planes. I'm gonna have to see it first, I think it's just really different. Thanks for posting.

Colorado One looks great in the new scheme! If I didn't know better, I'd say WN used the Colorado flag as inspiration for the new livery. I think most of them flow pretty well into the tail. I can't wait to see one painted!

I am not saying a 500 will be repainted! I am just saying if the airframe comes up for repaint and it looks horrible it probably will be repainted. JMO. WN doesn't let their aircraft look horrible. I have seen some that were bad but that was the early Spirit Jobs.

Yeah, I feel that same. The placing of the Southwest titles on the tail looks awkward to me, but maybe it will look better irl.

I have to point out an ignorant choice. The stripe up the tail is "silver". It is not only silver, it is silver flake. In the lack of research, SWA how do you touch up this paint??? It is like 711HK for touch-up paint, there is no such thing. You have to purchase an entire kit. A gallon of paint, primer and pint of metal flake. That is fine for 3 aircraft but now we have the silver that is going to be on every aircraft. No kits yet for touch-up. Wow, lets repaint but don't think about the cost to repair, touch-up or fix damage. Cost negative/neutral??? I don't think so.

I am sure you will agree when I say that WN did a poor job with the retrojets. Those A/C should have retained the exact classic livery that was actually portrayed on our planes. I also wish they would have chose the original ( with the airlines on the tail ) for at least the Herb Kelleher retrojet. IMHO I wish they'd dedicate an -800 to him as his -700 is starting to get up there in years.

Aren't they pretty close? The only difference I can see is the metal flake in the paint. To be honest I think it looks great, yes, it is expensive for the touch-up paint but I can live with the three aircraft with "sparkly paint", metal flake, but not with the new paint job. Why make the silver metal flake, you can't tell it from a few yards away? An expense that is completely ridiculous. Most of the mechs. I talk to don't even realize it is silver flake??? Goes to show you that at 25'000 ft. it just doesn't matter? LOL. It is something that I just don't understand, why did we do it? We have only had one aircraft with silver like that and it was Silver One. I am a medium seniority person, 15 years, and I thought we always tried to save money. By the way each silver kit is over $1000, no touch up kits. See where I'm going here? We are supposed to try and save money and then we get paint jobs like this????

Not only is the color off because of the glittery paint, the retro jets are missing the white trim (N714CB had this the first time around) around the windows and the black anti glare part on the nose below the cockpit windows. Without the trim they just don't look right.

I had forgot about the white around the windows, yep you are right. I do think it looks better though, the black anti-glare was not very important. I know what you are saying though. Not an exact retro but I think they look great. I love that metallic paint on them. I just don't understand the metallic silver stripe, dumb, dumb, dumb, on the new paint???? Really, just make it white WN if you are reading this, make it white or regular silver, it is going to cost too much. That little stripe is going to cost you thousands and thousands and there is no reason for it.

LOL and my OCD is causing major issue with the silver stripe not extending to the rear corner of the vertical stabilizer. It hits the top of the tail a foot or so in front of that corner point.

The first version of the retrojet on N714CB would have been a decent "livery refresh" as opposed to Canyon Blue. As far as the differences, well I am sure that touch up paint is justified now, as the silver in our new livery also has a metallic tint to it.

IMHO as much as I like the new livery, our staple was the "Southwest" on the tail. It just doesn't look the same without it.

Instead of copying and pasting the entire list, I will just add in the updates, and then at the end of the month the complete list. Similar to what is going on with the AA repaints.

** UPDATE 02/16/2015**

A/C 912- 737-700 ( In Paint )

A/C 918- 737-700 ( Goes to paint 02/18 ) Illinois One will be the first specialty plane to wear the new paint, as previously noted the specialty planes will have a different version of the "heart" livery on its tail.

Would you mind adding the total fleet at the top of your posts. Just so we can see how far the fleet is coming as a whole?

So this post would say (57/660) if you include the -500s.

Thanks and I appreciate your updates a lot!

Sure, so here is the list for March. I don't think there will be any repaints for this month.

TOTAL A/C REPAINTED : 65/650

atdb.org shows 655 active---not counting one stored 737-300 and one stored 737-500 and 17 737-700's in transition.

so their number of 655 is made up of:

737-300------120
737-500-------12
737-700-------431
737-800-------90

Total 655 ACTIVE a/c which does not include the latest 737-800 which they have not yet included so the real number is 656

IMHO as much as I like the new livery, our staple was the "Southwest" on the tail. It just doesn't look the same without it.

No, that would be the red belly. That's the one thing that has long-time employees most upset. The red belly was Southwest's identity. It's like Delta losing the widget.

They should be more worried about their "intangibles" (attitude, appearance, etc)... but they don't seem to understand that. Customers will never see the color red and think "Oh Southwest!.." -eyeroll-...WN employees only worried about silly things like the underside of an airplane. While they bellyache about how the plane resembles "Corndog on a stick" or whatever is popular to repeat... and compare it to Katy Perry's dress from the Superbowl Half-time show, they somehow fail to realize that the genius behind the company's NEW livery is that simply by relying on the three main primary colors, the very RECALL of our brand/ recognizing SOUTHWEST in things like a fast-food chain or a Superbowl Show IS what makes it work! If WN's own employees already see the brand in everything else.... so will the customers! That's kind of the point! Translate that visual color palette recognition into the shape of the heart and the mission of the visual brand shift is complete.

Geez, sorry to have poked the bear.

All I meant was the red belly was the staple of their identity. And it worked because everyone was able to look up and say "Look, Southwest!.."

Anyway, the new livery has grown on a lot of people, myself included.

Well it looks like 918 is still held up in paint. I believe both 918 and 910 will be done at the same time.

I never paid any attention to Southwest's new paint job but now that I've seen it...I like it...a lot. Way better than the last one...in fact, the best so far.
What the...?

Its grown on me too, although IMHO I still wish it had the titles on the tail.

One thing I was able to find out is that the new "Triple Crown One" will be N409WN and will make its debut in May. Not sure why they didn't do a N9**WN A/C as they're all coming up for paint soon..

I snapped this about 5 minutes ago. Doesn't look as bad in person but I still wish they could do something better.
