KLM 747-400 Fleet Gets Revised Livery Too

Tue Feb 10, 2015 8:34 am

The revised KLM livery as introduced on the F70 and later the 737 will now finds its way to the 747-400! The first 744 with the updated livery is currently undergoing maintenance as can be seen in the Instagram photo below:

Brilliant!

Do we know what the expected lifespan is of the KLM 744s? Hopefully many years to come!

Retirement starts the end of this year, with 3 frames I believe.
Should take some years though, I think the updated livery frames will stay the longest :p

Now that the 747 is getting the new colors too I wouldn't be surprised to see the A330 and 777 getting it too!

Rumor has it that the -400s that are owned and paid for will stay for some time to come. This seems to be mainly because of the lower fuel prices, but also due to financing problems with the new 789s that are supposed to start arriving later this year.

I guess we´ll see the last KLM 744s to leave the fleet around 2022-25.

They´ll surely get it. But its a subtle change and I expect they´ll do it "Qantas style". It´ll take 6 or 7 years, will only be done with D-checks, and planes which will be retired before 2020 will not be repainted if no technical reason enforces it.

Great, what's the registration of the 744 that is being maintained in KUL at the moment? Does anyone have the painting schedule of the full pax 744's to get the revised livery? And what's the painting schedule on the A330-200 fleet? I would love to see these in CUR!!!

True. More than any other type it has paved the way to everlasting boredom on our airports and in the air. I wish I could snap my fingers and transfer all 777s to planet Zorg!

I assume it too will get the revised livery very soon

From a quick search on FR24, the only KL744 out of service right now is PH-BFT - named City of Tokyo.
It's a 1997 built aircraft, so one of the youngest in KL's fleet, and will of course be one of the last to leave the fleet.

From the comments I read on Instagram I'd say it is in Subang (the former major KL airport) for heavy maintenance and a repaint.

It's obvious that at least this aircraft is being painted in Malaysia as per the original post. KL probably got a good maintenance deal for this aircraft and their own hangars most likely running at full capacity now too, hence the outsourcing to Malaysia in this case.

I expect the 747 and the 787 to be the only aircraft that look good with the new livery. The KLM logo is very symetric and the "wanna be" organic cheatline don't match imo. Moreover the new white on the belly is too light which makes the blue look like a helmet on the F70 and 737. Anyways, I'm headed for KUL next monday. Maybe I will get a chance to see the plane  Wink

Ugly change. A dumb swoosh towards the front that really makes KLM look like the leisure arm of AF-KLM. Too bad they went for it.

I don't think it looks that bad, the change. I just think it is unnecessary. KL is one of the classiest airlines out there.

I guess I understand that.

My personal taste, I wouldn't mind more blue. If they did a BA or LH kind of thing, removing the cheat line, dropping the blue and leaving an all-white belly... may have looked better. Even leaving the cheat line could still probably work, kind of like US. This just looks off. Then again, I'm no designer just an enthusiast.

That dark blue thin cheat line is actually crucial to the entire KL livery. Removing that line from the livery would be similar to removing the dark colored belly on the BA livery. Removing that thin cheat line definitely is a no-go in my opinion in order to keep the KL identity.

A peculiar thing about KL's livery is that though being a flag carrier, it has not taken inspiration from the Dutch flag. Of course there is no rule saying that a national airline needs to include the colours of the country/flag, but this is usually the case.

Does anyone know the origins of the KL Classic livery?

Shame. Many airlines have gone the way of swooshes and waves all around the place, only to recently abandon them in favour of more "retro" designs. The existing KLM livery was perfect. It didn't need to be touched.

If the CEO of KLM would see one of his planes in this revised livery next to, for example, a plane in the new Etihad livery, would he really think his one looked better?

I think it looks clumsy and I don't understand why it was approved by KLM management. It lacks the grace of most KLM designs of the past.

Yes, he would think exactly that.
It will endure far better than "ten shades of sand, arranged in geometric oddities" will.
Etihad's new livery is beautiful, but will look old quickly. Like American's.
The more sedate liveries, TK, AF, KL, SQ.... they live on and on, and still look fresh.

Does anyone here know or have an indication whether the full pax 747-400's will still receive (heavy) maintenance before retirement? If not, this would mean that they won't be painted in the new livery, right? I saw a full pax 747-400 last year that looked like brandnew so I suppose that one will most likely not see the new livery?
