Private A330-200 Range

Fri Feb 13, 2015 4:40 pm

There is great speculation about why the Turkish President's private A330-200 made a stop in HOU after taking off from MEX, on its way to ESB? I know its super tough to guess range without knowing weight but can a private 332 make MEX ESB non stop? MEX elevation is the only difficulty here or else I am sure it can.

He stopped so he could go ice skating at the Galleria in HOU.

Extremely unlikely. MEX 7300ft is above sea level and usually well above ISA temps with 'only' 13000ft of runway, that will kill the performance of any airplane, let alone big twins which are not exactly famed for their hot and high capabilities.

Even in private config? That makes a huge difference I think

What makes you think the private aircraft will perform better? Are you assuming it weighs less (which would normally not be the case)? Once you get to those sort of density altitudes the payload starts to become irrelevant, its the 100 tons of fuel that will kill the performance.

I'm assuming a private 332 with less than 100 pax and no cargo makes it light. Good point regarding altitude. Thanks

What? Not enough fun skating in Mexico City?

I have no idea what sort of interior this particular aircraft has in it, but 'business jet' style interiors are frighteningly heavy despite the best efforts of manufacturers. Even a standard airline style interior weighs a hell of a lot, and the fuel required to fly the ~6500nm (nearly 14 hours with reserves) from MEX-ESB would leave little 'usable payload' for cargo anyway.

Are the 7600 foot runways at HOU enough for it to take off at max weight without penalties?

No, but you could get some 480,000lbs out of there. Take a look at the section starting with page 268 in:

for a twin the A330 family has excellent hot&high performance due to its oversized wing.

It is just 4000nm, should be easy.

Agreed, but it still can't make MEX-ESB non stop though.

Actually it's about 6400nm with airways routings. Eastbound over the atlantic thats a flight time of about 13 hours.

Great circle distance MEX-ESB is 7,300nm.

Well the mystery is solved as the President's spokesperson revealed that the stopover at HOU was scheduled as the range of the plane wasn't enough as the elevation of MEX didn't allow max fuel take off.

I was just being silly in my response on #2. I'm not sure if they stopped at HOU (literally) or IAH. But as others have stated, the elevation really kills performance of aircraft at MEX.

You're (making the common mistake of) confusing nautical miles (nm) with statute miles (mi)

MEX-ESB is approx 7300mi... that's 6349nm.
