Could this be the new Hainan service to PEK that was rumored on Anet a week or two ago?

I guess I am just hoping its someone else and a new destination.

The press release is wrong: this is not SJC's "first ever non-stop to an international destination".
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 181 airports, 92 airlines, 78 a/c types, 403 routes, 58 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,119,414 passenger miles.

Slightly misleading when AA had nonstop service to Paris, Taipei and Tokyo when it had a hub there. The Tokyo service lasted as long as 2006...

Plenty of photos of AA MD-11 and 777s in the database, including these of the inaugural flights to Taipei and Paris in 2001.

It could be SJC's first ever nonstop to that particular destination, i.e. PEK, which AA never served when the hub was open.

I took it differently from the entire sentence. "First-ever nonstop service to an international destination in demand by Silicon Valley travelers" probably is attempt to reference the first service to PEK from SJC instead of the airport's first international route.

I think it's a safe bet this is HU to PEK.

Dark horse is BA to LHR, but I'd put money that it's HU.

It's a pretty good guess that it's not AS to MEX now. I could believe AS resuming PVR sometime though.

The previous flurry of talk a few weeks ago about HU to PEK from SJC was when the route was applied for. This will be the official announcement by the city and the airline.

Does anyone know if the route approval has actually happened yet? Or is SJC just tired of waiting and will announce it anyway?

Yes DOT promptly approved all of Hainan's recent proposal to BOS, SEA and SJC.

US authorization is only a formality. Chinese side has plenty of unused frequency allocations to utilize.

I never knew that AA had those flights to Taipei and Paris. I knew about the NRT flight they had. So what happened to the Taipei and Paris flights? Why did they get rid of those flights? Furthermore, what were the departure times?

Furthermore, what were the departure times?

IIRC, the TPE flight operated about the same time as the Narita flight, I also think there was 1 big bank of flights in & out (relatively speaking, of course) of SJC that serviced both Asian & European flights. And as HNL pointed out already 9/11 killed those routes, because 9/11 killed the silicon valley.

AA has twice operated a hub or focus city at SJC, they did a much better showing the second time, as the first one was a horribly pathetic mess & AA ground a special belnd into industrial roast and no one bought it, HAH!, Sorry, I digress.

The second time it lasted longer than a year or two at least, but I think AA was really willing & able to step to the challenge of dominating an emerging market the second time.

Had 9/11 not happened when it did, I'm not sure we'd have NH or HU at SJC, but instead I'm betting we''d have an entrenched AA dominating many International markets by now, but instead it happened, so oh well.

AA apparently had plans to fly international flights to NRT, TPE, LGW, GDL and CDG.

CDG and TPE lasted from about 4/2001 to 10/2001. They started and ended on the same day. AA started MIA and OGG on the same day around that time too. MIA only lasted about six months too. OGG lasted until about 2006.

Airways magazine published an article on Hainan back in 2009 http://store.airwaysnews.com/product_p/a-160.htm and after reading that I told the SJC's former Director of Air Service Development to look into them. He's been gone over a year now, so I don't know if this had any impact on the decision.

It will be nice to have another interesting carrier to spot here.

Good for SJC. Just lets hope HU eventually starts making money on the route. Its initial financial projections were for a loss even with the SJC incentive package in pocket.

From what I gather Chinese carriers dont tend to focus on profitability on longhauls and look at them as more long term strategic investments.
Like most things with China, their outlook horizons are much longer than what Western enterprises utilize.

Given the timing of the new HU flights, where will they park? ANA has it's 787 at A15 and AFAIK both international gates (A15 and A16) can't fit a widebody at the same time. The only other time of day when there are 2 w/b aircraft on the ground at SJC is overnight with the 2 HA 763's, but those aren't international so one can park at gate A3.

Are there any online schematics/plans for this? I would be curious to see how they are going to achieve this. Also, do we know which gates will be able to handle W/B aircraft after the conversion out of 15, 16, 16, and 18? I would imagine if it was something like 15 and 17, then 16 and maybe even 18 would have to be blocked off.

Not that I know of, but I'm pretty sure it'll just be a hallway mirroring the one that connects 15 and 16 to the FIS; that hallway goes underneath the walkway between 16 and 17 that connects the IAB to Terminal B anyway.

The new hallway from 17 and 18 is in the process of being constructed. It will be finished by the HU inaugural. There was already a door in the gate 17 boarding area that connects 17 to the FIS entry hallway.

17 and 18 are in B. 15 and 16 in A. The entry hallway that connects the gates to FIS is between the two. They should be able to park a 787 on each side, as the HU and NH flights will be on the ground simultaneously. Just not sure if the Y4 aircraft will fit between the two, as will also on the ground around the same time. FIS should be nicely crowded around Noon!

Just wanted to say I went to SJC last weekend, and every screen at check-in was advertising the new service to PEK! I think I even saw the ad rotating through on the gate screens.

Congrats SJC! Always nice to see "secondary" airports get long-haul service.
