"New Austrian" - March 26, 2015

Austrian is set to make an important announcement next month. This Thursday, CEO Jaan Albrecht, will present lots of news to the 6,000 employees with a project, called "New Austrian".

According to inside information, new destinations will be announced . A possible new destination will be MIA.

Fleet renewal will also be presented that day. The Fokker will be replaced in the next few years by Embraer jets and/or Bombardier CSeries. Note: Just a rumor.

New uniforms are expected as well.

The wiki page for Austrian says that Tyrolean will be completely merged into Austrian itself by March 31, 2015 per new labor agreement.

I wish them all the best. I flew with Austrian in summer of 2013. Had a very pleasant experience.

I confess being so far away from Europe, and Austria - Austrian always appeared to me as a quiet achiever, plodding along and doing well. Is this a correct perspective?

Might they announce some further wide-body fleet expansion as well, perhaps some orders of 77W, 787, 330Neo, or 350? Their current widebody fleet seems way too small to do any long haul expansion.

I'd somewhat expect that given it's such a huge announcement, and of course the aging 763's.

Apparently Austrian is set to change its European onboard product. At some stage this year, economy passengers will have to pay for checked bags, food and maybe seat selection.

This may apply only to passengers flying within Europe. Not sure if it will apply to transit passengers flying with Austrian via VIE and who are making short-haul to long-haul connections or v.v.

I wonder if details of this new policy will be announced soon to take effect from the start of the summer schedule ?

I hope they don't change too much- I love them the way they are!
Most pleasant business class experience across the Pond that I've ever had. Hands-down.
And I thought the FA uniforms were pretty. Maybe they could use a touch of updating, but nothing drastic.

I expected the uniforms to be bad also...BUT when I finally flew with them and saw them close up...I was very impressed at the quality of each part and that they managed to get those various materials to match perfectly. Not an easy feat. They work. Obviously they're not street clothes but as a uniform, they work.

I always had a great experience on Austrian, brilliant food & service, let's hope LA is their next destination - PS keep the new uniforms red

They're going to need some more widebodies if they are going to announce some new destinations, especially long haul... But the question is, which will they get? I suppose the 787 seems like a no-brainer with an already all boeing widebody fleet.

Well good luck to the "New Austrian" wish them all the best - but what ever happens they have to keep the board at LH happy, last year they were looking at adding extra 772's but only on the condition that they were making signs of profit - think 1 was added - but would be nice to see the 763's be replaced with 787's !

Route wise - there was talk of adding links in ASIA - SIN, PVG were talked about MIA would be an interesting one!

The current colors are OK I seem to like them so I hope they don't change it - could you imagine another "Euro White" !

but going by what Wikipedia say -

I could maybe see that, though with the 767's aging, I would also think that a replacement plan would be on the agenda as well, especially so given that the rest of LH group seems to have new aircraft on the way but Austrian is still stuck with relatively aged ones, and a very small fleet of them on that note that doesn't seem like it makes expansion very viable.

I don't think we'll see OS initiate a BOB only service on short/emedium hauls flights. OS is known for offering a very nice on board product, better than both LH/LX. I think the choice of being able to buy a premium meal versus the regular Y catering will be kept. It's another revenue generator and people seem to like it from what I understand. Perhaps, they will offer plan option to do this on long haul flights as well. DL & Col is the best out there.

If they update their livery, I see it going with the billboard type of script like LX has done. That's the new trend. It's nice OS isn't as "euro white" bland like LH/LX and now Eurowings, German Wings (IMO, they should have kept German Wings grayish livery.)

Updating the OS fleet seems to be pretty straight forward. Since they disposed of the Boeing NB fleet, and decided to go with Airbus for short/mediumhaul, I think it's a given they will stick with them.

On the other hand, Longhaul, I can see OS ordering 787-8/787-9s to replace their 767-300ERs (76W). When it comes time to replace their 77E fleet, I see them ordering the new 777-8. Maybe we'll see OS order A350s, however, their market is very unique where they don't need larger wide body fleets like LX does .

For a a/c in the 75-100 seat market, how quickly will OS need them? If rather soon, I see them ordering E90/E95s. Perhaps, we'll see OS order the CS100?

It would be nice to expect positive news about new aircraft, new routes even a better passenger experience, but surely all our experience in the last few years have told us that these big announcements are invariably about reducing costs and improving margins with a worse passenger experience.

The business traveller article makes it pretty clear what to expect:

"Austrian Airlines CEO Jaan Albrecht told RGN: "We will offer the customer the flexibility to decide individually whether he/she is willing to pay for a bag, for food onboard, for more legroom or for a window seat."

so expect fees for everything (and presumably less miles awarded etc. etc.) --- all the usual "improvements" that airlines offer the customers these days.

Cynical? possibly but sadly based on experience.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Not only does Emirates fly VIE-DXB but there's also Niki flying VIE-AUH. And then we have FlyDubai operating BTS-DXB ...and BTS is just down the road from VIE.

Well the article to which I provided the link, quotes Austrian's CEO claiming that passengers on flights (within Europe, I suppose) would in future in future be expected to pay for amenities.

Maybe back in the "good old days" but not anymore. They had severe financial difficulties back in the 2000s, even flew to SYD. As a previously state owned airline, they bought just about every type and never worried too much about making a profit.

LH rescued them in 2008 from complete destruction.

as an employee at that time it was frustrating to be in the hands of politics. To have to save bancrupt Lauda Air and then integrate their Boeing fleets into an Airbus fleet ( MD80s beeing phased out) we as employees were totally p..d off.
But the merger is still a problem only to be surpassed by the next integration of Tyrolean

Mergers just don't work. Always wonder how the girls and guys (of all three companies) in direct contact with the customers keep up their spirits being led through this valley of tears by their superiors. Kudos

Well, with that type of product, good luck to them fighting with FR (in BTS) , EZ, JU, HG etc. for short haul and EK and Co for long haul. I see no chance.
Anyway, having flown them a l lot, in the past and in recent times, I will not miss them. VIE is a well positioned airport and someone will take their place.

Or to give out a decent product. Sadly it does not seem that the mentality of the people working at AUA as changed at all it these last 6 years. They took the argument that they have to spare for a race to the bottom. But, down there, as I said before, they will find people better than them at that.

the LH board decided to base 2 A320s of Eurowing in VIE for point-to-point flying. those will be flown by Austrian crews.

I really hope OS keep their great livery. There are so many poor new liveries of late, the current OS is still fresh and one of the best in Europe.
