Retires after 50 years... to become cabin crew?

Obviously pilots have an expiration date, but in theory there might be ground, office or inflight folks with roots that go way back.

There are. Lifers are out there especially in smaller stations, but also at the legacy hubs. Laguardia is a young place. But small stations you will find people who enjoy the steady work and stay there decade after decade. I even knew some office staff from the 1960s. Important to recognize that most lifers see their career as something meaningful, not just a paycheck. Or, at least they did at one time. When tragedy strikes, and part of the system goes down, people take it very personally.
