Another slap in the face from EK aimed at Delta and US carriers criticizing it. Will be interesting to see how US airlines respond to this

On a separate note, what is EK doing with all of its 777-300ERs? They are still taking delivery of new ones, and yet 777-300ER routes are decreasing.

I suppose there are old A332s, A345s, B772A, B773A are all retiring or are due for retirement in addition to the expansion.
That's how they are being utilised.

Where can one find the actual loads on these A380s? There was an ex-EK captain on here who once said these moves were more of a ego thing among the ME3. Though if these whales are flying full then kudos to them  .

4X Daily? The link to the article does not say anything in the plural tense, and it only gives one pair of flight numbers. Where did 4X daily come from? You must mean weekly? Or all you combining all EY A380 flights like from DXB? Still impressive, though.

So it begins, EK will use their new AC to establish routes across the atlantic, I bet CUN is not very far away from their plans, how legacies compete? I don't know ! EK for me is steamrolling the industry...

Bet loads will be good enough to keep the route alive for a while, if they have great loads the legacies face an uphill battle...

I just priced dates in June and the fares are HALF that. Less than 500 dollars round trip.

Fares at that price in June arent meant to make a profit, it is out for blood. Question is who is EK trying to eviscerate with fares like that?

They'll be sending them on new routes like Bob's Airport, North Dakota, and Sally's International Airport and Barn, Idaho. They feel they can develop a market there, and eventually up-gauge those to A380s as well once the 777W hits 12% loads.

More than a good move from EK, I think this is a bad move from MXP.
JFK was already well served from that airport. Letting EK introduce so much capacity will drive away other carriers.
They should have proposed EK to open a link to an unserved destination or one where there is currently not much capacity deployed.

Come on, is not like they are introducing a new route. It is just a small upgrade. I believe the Milan catchment area can well afford that.

I´m not sure how many flights there are right now between Milan and New York but I believe there´s a daily AZ with A332, a daily DL with A333, a daily UA with 767 (soon 777) on EWR and I´m not sure if also AA operates with a 767 on JFK.

This is on top of the EK flight with 77W which will be upgauged to A380.

If I were in the MXP administration, rather than risk to lose AA or UA, I´d try and get EK to open up something else from MXP. Miami for example, or California. How about South America? Though I´m not sure it makes sense for EK to go from DXB north west to MXP and then south west to GIG or GRU.
But maybe they (MXP) have their reasons or they couldn´t get it any other way. We´ll have to wait and see how that particular market will develop.

Ciao

There has been a persistent rumor that has come from a few different sources I have in, or close to AS, that when AS inked their deal with EK, is the same time the AS/DL relationship soured beyond repair & DL went & did their own thing.

I am not saying anything more than I've been told, and if you examine the timeline, the two times do match up. I also think if DL was warning AS about getting into bed with EK, not so much because they too have one flight to Dubai, but more because DL feels the ME3 are the devil, or whatever that inane remark was.

It could have pissed DL off way more than just helping EK in Seattle, but the larger impact the ME3 could have in the future in the US International travel market. Which DL is always trying to get a bigger chunk of.

Just curious...

How is EK able to operate this route legally?

They are not based in either country.

As for the 380 on this route, it is a money loser. And will cause everyone on the route to lose money.

no, it is competition, which will help give choice to customers and help keep prices low.

it's a free market, and other carriers will need to find new ways to compete if they lose market share.

Honestly, I don't know, but I guess it depends on bilateral agreements between EU member states and the US and UAE, so it might differ from member state to member state.

So I guess the short answer is no, they cannot, it depends on each country. But others might actually know how it really is, I don't.

Everyone. I've been saying for years that the "1-stop between every 2 cities via Dubai" is not scalable, and that EK will be going after 5th freedom routes across the Atlantic and Pacific. You're just starting to see the begining of it. They can make money on those fares because their operating costs are ridiculously low. Then after they eliminate the competition, they'll be able to print money even more so than they do now. Their goal is not to offer low fares to the masses. Their goal is to eliminate competition so they can make more money.

The Italian government in this one really baffles me.

Not only giving EK a 5th freedom flight on a route where there is plenty of competition with local and US carriers, but "competing" with Etihad which somehow has greatly helped to save Alitalia.

Evidence and quotes from the CEOs of operators of the type would suggest otherwise.

Singapore have often referred to the draw of the A380.

British Airways are on record as reporting an increase in demand on rotations which carry the A380, in particular LAX over alternative flights.

Emirates cite the A380 as a Market and revenue generator. Officially available statistics back up the fact that, where there is say, one A380 rotation and one with another type, the A380 consistently outperforms the other on load factor. When your A380 has a farely dense premium upper deck configuration, it makes your A380 not a money loser but, to quote Emirates, the goose that lays the golden eggs, time and time again.

It will cause some to lose money, no doubt; it's unlikely to be Emirates long term.

EK cannot bend every rule to their advantage. 5th freedom made sense when planes couldn't fly long distances and flights originating from remote parts couldn't fill seats.

Just because EK found a hot shot attorney and/or a sloppy court in Italy doesn't mean Italy can be the trojan horse for EK's capacity dumping plan on US.

It is up to Italy to fix this issue.

Another slap in the face from EK aimed at Delta and US carriers criticizing it. Will be interesting to see how US airlines respond to this

And I hope there are more "slaps in the face" to come for DL/AA/UA from EK and others.

Lead by the arrogant Delta with its creation of lobbying groups like "Airlines for America" they have been very successful heretofore in bullying airlines like BW in the Caribbean. But with Emirates, Qatar and Etihad I suspect they have met their match and then some. The sudden deployment of the A380 on MXP to JFK is no doubt a direct response.

DL/AA/UA, patriotism runs thin when you treat your passengers like garbage!

...How do they treat their customers like garbage? Just because the American airlines don't have as much money as the ME3 to put toward their planes' onboard amenities they're treating their customers like garbage?

What was the reason to start a UAE aviation thread only to abandon it and do separate threads on things related to the region?
