it´s a very high yield plane, where are they currently flying the A380?? I see one usually all the day in JNB for the red eyes both ways, so they must be doing very good to have a plane sitting in JNB for the full day almost.

I hope we can see some pics of the new Economy comfort installed in the planes soon, and some trip reports.

Interesting development. Let's see if they'll stick with two different configurations.

That economy section in the upper deck looks interesting. I wonder if it is worth to pay for Premium Economy if you can catch an emergency exit on the side seats up there.

The Economy section in the rear of the upper deck is a quick change section, so the two configurations can be interchanged fast and easily.

ok, thanks for the info.

When you say 'quick change section', you mean quick as in '4 hours' or as in '1 day'?
Just curious how fast they can change it. I suppose they won't change it for just a few flights, and then change it back?

For what its worth,
between LHs economy class and the premium economy is a huge difference for larger guys like me with 1,93m.
Also the width with 8 accross instead of 10 in the lower deck is good.

I just experienced LH' premium eco in the 748i from HN to FRA and it was great.
Could be one of my standards if I refuse to pay LH's prohibitive charges for their Business class when I have to book on shorter notice.

Presumably one would have to board on the main deck and get to the upper deck Y-class seats via the rear stairs. Think I'd rather be in the spacious main cabin. Or better still, pay for Y+ at the front of the main deck. Presumably Y+ will have better food and booze, and higher w/c to pax ratio as well as more spacious seats?!

If the 747 fleet is and indicator, it will take around 6 hours to reconfigure it. It is mainly thought as a tool to manage capacity on a seasonal basis, not on a flight-to-flight. The A380 used to be an oddball in the Lufthansa long haul fleet as it was the only one that did not change configurations seasonally at least in a part of the fleet.

The Premium Economy section has the best real estate on the A380, they should put First Class or some Business on the first floor and the Y+ on the rear upper deck.

First and Business are upstairs for a reason, the upstairs is narrower than the main deck. They can't go more abreast in those classes, so any additional width would go into the aisles while losing Economy seats. Makes no sense at all.

Also makes no sense. Takes away flexibility. Also, with the configuration as it is, the Y+ can deplane before the normal Y passengers, just as it is supposed to be.

Since many operators place their First Class suits there, that is what is so special about zone A. Singapore, Qantas, Air France to name 3.

Zone A is more premium space then the rear of the upper deck so it should have a higher class. J class is better on the upper deck if zone a on the lower is used for First Class but a small J cabin( along with more J class upstairs) is better in zone A then Y +.

BA, AF, LH, Qantas and now Singapore have Y+ and all except LH place the Y+ on the rear upper deck. LH may discover having a split J class cabin is better then the whole length of the upper deck.

I'm sure LH and all the other airlines put a lot of thought into their specific configuration. I don't think that one is better or one is worse. They're different to cater the airlines specific needs (what ever they may be).

Same with Air China putting their new First Class between door 1 and 2 instead of the nose or upper deck section on their new 748s.

With 509 total seats, this is one of the higher density A380 configs. It also appears to tolerate lots of premium demand. Good use of space.

It's astonishing to me that an airline can fill so many premium seats on a consistent basis. Although I realize the first and business class may not go out full on every flight, still an airline doesn't install more seats than it thinks it can reasonably fill. LH must make a killing on a flight when its premium classes go out full.

FWD UD is by far the quietest place on the plane, so FC there makes most sense. Also LH has put in additional noise insulationan in that zone. It is REALLY quiet. Due to FC U1L door is the first one to open, so it makes sens to place the next most valuable pax, CC, next to it to provide fast deboarding. Also. in FRA, termianal facilities are set up to board UD straight from the lounges. U wont see any changes here. Next door to open is M1L, PY will be the first to deplane MD. Due to the uncompliceted config change opportunity, MD FWD was the most probable spot to place PY.

Selecting process was quite detailed with all the pros and cons evaluated. This made the most sense.

Reasoning by analogy. Completely lacking any logic. Just that others place their First Class there doesn't make it the universally best spot to place it and has no implication on other carriers choices in itself.

Quoting jfk777 (Reply 14):

Reverse reasoning. What makes it more premium? Is that your personal opinion or a fact?

Quoting jfk777 (Reply 14):
but a small J cabin( along with more J class upstairs) is better in zone A then Y +.

A conclusion derived from completely screwed up reasoning. Try reasoning from first principles next time instead of looking at what others are doing.
The way Lufthansa has chosen to place the classes in the A380 is the most efficient way for them. As I have pointed out above, their F an J seat configurations would waste a lot of space on the main deck and thus reduce the overall seat count and revenue potential of the plane.
You can put 2-4-2 Premium Economy on the main deck but only 2-3-2 on the upper deck, but you can only put 2-2-2 in Business Class on either, so what makes more sense? It's really a no brainer.

At least one of those seat maps have been out for awhile - including bookable seat maps on the LH site - but this is great info nonetheless.

I myself have grabbed a premium economy seat for a flight this spring from SFO to Europe, and look forward to trying the new product in the superjumbo configuration. Based on my recent experience of premium economy on a couple of other airlines, this p.e. product should be a winner for Lufthansa as well.

Well, according to Boeings Marketing the A380 is too quiet. Lufthansa only addresses that now by putting the best seats where the noise level is just at the right premium level.

Maybe as simple a reason as the A340 being about right or a little low on capacity as to what they like and can consistently fill, while the A380 is a bit big and "wasting" space on a large Y+ hits just a different yield/m2 point with better margin/m2.

Same situation in JNB as in South America. In order to maximize proper connections and appropriate flight times, given the little to no time difference, you have to "waste" the plane.

It would if it was the most viable way of doing it. As noted, CA has put F between L1 and L2 on the 747 for years.

In this case, LH is making the most efficient use of space that allows for a very premium product.

It's probably a good indication that LH carriers more premium traffic than AF. LH also has a significantly higher percentage of widebodies with F class than AF.

The trick is to balance use of space and exclusivness of your premium product. Depending on which direction you let it swing, you will end up with a diffrent layout. LH favors the exclusivnes. Same product, small cabin, 8 seats on evey a/c, very exclusive and hard to get to product, no private travel for staff unless senior managment level. You know, if you got in, you made it. That is just one approach. The other is good product, better use of space, fairly easy access (miles or other upgrade policy) to burn up all those FTL miles, etc. Just pick either one and your layout will look different.

What you mean is premium service! Coincidentally one finds that at premium space areas, which are as far forward as you can get, less noise, less turbulence and prime spot for a fast deplaning.
