Fellow A.netters,

This list is my first bigger "research" post on this page so have mercy on me in case of mistakes, a discussion is welcome anyway.

The question which state is "visually" dominated by which carrier has been occupying myself for a while so I finally decided to take a closer look at it.

I did not find any similar threads searching the forum but I know the search engine doesn't always fulfil its purpose quite well, so should this already exist in some way, consider my post an updated version or delete it if necessary. I won't take it personal  

So now the criteria I chose: I would decide "strongest presence" by the NUMBER OF AIRPORTS an airline currently flies into in a state (lower 48) - the carrier which has most, wins the state in a "winner takes it all"-way, like the US presidential elections. I will for every state name the winning carrier as well as listing the destinations.
I do count regional subsidiaries into an airline (Eagle = AA; Delta Connection = DL; UAX = UA; US Express = US) but I will not count EAS carriers as long as they don't operate under the brand of a major carrier, otherwise the results would be somewhat falsified as I count only the number of airports and not passenger numbers. At the end of the table I will upload a map with every state colored according to its predominant carrier.

As I wrote above, if there are any criticisms or i.e. airports I forgot to count, feel free to correct me.

Interesting concept - I think the even more interesting consideration would be to measure which carrier is largest by capacity in each state, as measured by seats departing from the state's airports. I would guess that, by that measure, you'd have for example:

AA #1 in Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, etc.
Delta #1 in Georgia, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, etc.
Southwest #1 in California, Maryland, Tennessee, etc.
United #1 in Illinois, New Jersey, Colorado, etc.

So this is "which airline serves the most number of destinations in each state" ? - interesting Air Canada takes New Jersey.

Interesting topic, but I think your logic is flawed.

No way does UA have stronger presence in Oregon than AS/QX. I don't think that flying into one more airport makes them stronger. How many daily seats does AS have compared to UA? How many destinations? I bet it's not even close.

I'm guessing you got this idea from the exact same topic about Railroads by State in Trains Magazine a few Months ago.

This is really interesting. I also think that the view of most airports served juxtaposed with most passengers served is interesting.

It will be interesting to see if it changes at all wtih the combined AA/US.

Yes, that surprised me too but it makes sense since there are only three airports in NJ with scheduled commercial service and AC is / will be the only carrier serving two of them - TTN is F9 exclusive and F9 doesn't serve any other destinations, NK from ACY doesn't go to EWR either

I think this is interesting to see, but I don't think this is the best way to see who really "wins" each state. A better way to analyze this would have been by using seats or flights. The number of airports and airline serves in each state is almost irrelevant. Thanks for the information though!

9K - RUT (to BOS)
B6 - BTV (to JFK)

At least for Nevada, this is just laughable. To say Delta is dominant because they have some tiny aircraft flying to Elko? Give me a break. The other airlines just serve RNO and LAS because the vast majority of the population (maybe 95%) live within a one hour drive of those two airports. Elko has less than 1% of the state's population.

I'll go with WN based on the number of aircraft I see at LAS and RNO.

Maybe the JANET airline (or whatever they are called) should be number 1 because it serves Las Vegas, Tonopah, and Area 51.

I understand your criticism, actually though I got this idea on my own, trains aren't that interesting to me... I started asking myself about this topic looking at Flightradar tracks at the east coast, this was when I realized for the first time that ie US served every active commercial airport in North Carolina and that got me thinking

What happens to Tennessee if you add in TRI, served by both DL and US?

This was my point about Oregon too. UAX serves Coos Bay, so United is more dominant in Oregon than AS/QX.

I think the OP is just looking at number of destinations served by airline by state.

You have it wrong for Maryland, as BWI is the only major airport in the state (and largest in the MD/DC/NoVa metro area) and it is 72% WN. WN serves upwards of 64 cities.

Delta (8) and United (6) have more destinations than US Airways (3) does, too.

WN carries more passengers out of ABQ alone than AA and UA out of ABQ, SAF, ROW, and HOB combined.

Well, according to parameters in OPs opening statements, Maryland is served by US at BWI and SBY, whereas WN only serves BWI.

So , as stated, if EAS carriers are ignored, then DL/OO service to BTM and many others should then be eliminated, correct?

And what about adding cargo lines? I bet Ameriflight would take many states lol.

WN presence in this table is deceiving, I know how important they are in terms of passenger miles however as stated before I only counted destinations per state with a "winner takes it all" principle and the lead to the situation that the only state where WN appears significant is Ohio, interestingly playing a "swing state" role too

I did not ignore EAS carriers that operated explicitly for major airlines, such as OO for DL or UA in the west

You forgot San Angelo SJT for Texas, it is served by AA/AE

Interesting. So it looks if one combines AA and US (which should have been done), Ohio flips to AA.

As an exercise in doing research and presenting the results it is an interesting learning experience, but ranks in significance with a statistical analysis of luggage colors by airport altitude.

For anyone interested: My principal airport is at 4415 feet and my luggage is orange or light blue depending on the trip.

All-mainline carriers like WN are at a fundamental disadvantage in this comparison due to the fact that the size of their planes limits capacity flexibility in small markets. But, it is neat to see this state-by-state comparison of network breadth, which is no doubt an important consideration for some customers. Thanks for taking the time to assemble this.

FWIW -- BDL should be 'Hartford' or 'Hartford/Springfield'. Windsor Locks is a small town where the airport is located, just north of Hartford. Similar to how the airport service Cincinnati (CVG) is actually in Hebron, Kentucky or how both airports servicing DC are not in DC proper.

Also -- Southwest is the strongest carrier in CT in terms of PAX numbers.

Why don't you offer up some research, same topic substitute European states and type it up in german.

NJ- Air Canada is not a done deal in ACY, so would not include this yet (not on AC route map yet)... so pretty much every airline in EWR and NK, F9 are all tied..

RI- wouldnt 9K take it with PVD and BID?

So if this entire research is based solely on the number of airports an airline serves in a state, then any results will be quite misleading for the smaller states.

My real objection is the title. Simply say what it is, the ranking of most airports served by state. If you didn't notice the premise as explained in the text, you would presume an erroneous result. Strongest presence to me means most passengers, or at least most flights, or available seats. Especially for Nevada, counting two daily visits by a CRJ-200 more than a few dozen 737's is silly.

Th OP has almost certainly never been to Nevada, much less to Elko so it is easy to misunderstand the significance but LAS serves about 2,000,000 residents and enough tourists to keep some of its 150,000 hotel rooms busy. Elko serves about 2,000 residents and people who like to visit very large mines. I've done that myself.

What a fun little exercise! Best thing I've seen all day.

From New Hampshire I would have to say WN is the dominate carrier. WN offers non stops from KMHT to KMDW,KBWI.KMCO and KTPA with the new AA offers nonstop fromKMHT to KDCA,KPHL and KCLT.

Very good thread. Even in non hub states it's interesting which airline is the most popular. Non hub states would be like Idaho and Montana etc.

This is an interesting list. I wonder how it would look with number of flights to that state, seat count into the state, aircraft, etc...

The OP even stated it is a winner take all race - like the presidential race. If the vote in a state is 49% democrat and 51% republican, the republicans take 100% of the electoral vote. Same with the this data. If DL is the only airline flying to 3 airports in NV, everyone else only flies to 2 airports in NV, DL wins 100% of NV. That is the OP point.

It is interesting trivia to know. United at one time advertised it was the only airline to fly to all 50 states. That doesn't make them a better airline, or more desirable airlines or a better investment risk. But it is an interesting fact to know. (it is no longer true)

OP thank you for the time it took to compile all the data. Of course we could dive into lots of others stats and dissect those stats even further. If you ever get the time/feel the need I'd love for you to do the same, under the same parameters with the cargo environment, to include all the small feeders for the major partner! Thx again!

I generally perceive Southwest as dominating California in terms of people moved back and forth. If they don't beat UA they seem to be a close second.

What I find most interesting is how US still dominates by number of destinations served from New York down to South Carolina. The legacy of Allegheny and Piedmont is still very evident in US Airways' network today.

I suspect so, yes. Even excluding USAirways, I suspect AA is the largest single airline in Florida by departing seats, driven by the MIA hub which is predominantly mainline, with plenty of widebodies. On top of that, even pre-merger AA isn't exactly tiny in the rest of the state (MCO, TPA, FLL, etc.). Once adding in USAirways - with its substantial capacity to CLT/PHL - I think it's a virtual certainty that AA is #1 overall in the state.

Great thread. Before looking at the data I was inclined to think more generally about strong airline presence by US state. In other words, when I think of Illinois, I would think United is strongest (or UA and AA); New York (JetBlue, American); Pennsylvania (US/AA); California (UA and AA); Washington (Alaska); Texas (UA, AA, and WN); Florida (AA;though I understand DL is big, too), et. al.

Also didn't think any airline served Jamestown, ND. I remember NW used way back.

Incorrect. Cape Air (9K) is the "largest" in the Bay State with six airports served:
ACK, BOS, EWB, HYA, MVY, and PVC.

Also incorrect. 9K is also "largest" in the Pine Tree State, serving three airports:
