I would agree with you if this happened everyday. But the reality is it doesn't. And except for the last few years where the jet stream has dipped south for an extended period of time, diversion rates are not that high. The last few winters have been historic. Rational decisions are made with long term data. We are using very short term data to feed the outrage here. Which is typical, just look at Twitter.

19 times out of 31 last January is "nearly everyday" at least more often than not, but already a 10% rate of diversions should move the airline to include an advisory comment at the time of booking. The great circle distance TXL-EWR is 3,458 nm and that is on the edge of the range for a 757-200Wl.

Icelandair on their west east flights stops at around 3,250 nm to be sure of not having to take fuel stops.

Yep.

It's unfortunate UA won't do anything about the awful fraud and deception regarding their TXL-EWR flight.

Just to add to the discussion. I flew JFK-MAD-JFK in the summer of 1992 on an Air Europa 757. I believe it was a scheduled charter for the summer season.

There is an old thread on the topic. Someone posted they also flew JFK-MAD on Air Europe but back in 1990.

Oh please. At least regarding BGR, diversions for fuel are usually on the ground less than one hour.

Furthermore, I don't know if diversions still clear customs at BGR, but they do have the ability. The customs processing terminal was built in the 1970's when it was common for first generation airliners to stop for fuel at BGR. They also use to clear customs at the same time, thereby saving passengers long lines at customs at their final destination in busy cities.
