"big" G4 Announcement Tomorrow 2/24

Mon Feb 23, 2015 10:06 pm

According to Allegiant Air's Facebook & Twitter handles, there is going to be a "BIG" announcement tomorrow, February 24th, 2015.

What do you think will be announced? As it is a Tuesday, the announcement is mostly likely related to new routes.

I am hoping for more expansion out of PGD, and additional service out of GRR & LAN. It would be nice to see G4 add seasonal GRR-MSY service. In addition, bring back service on GRR to PGD. Maybe we could see LAN to PGD added? Besides a short stint by G4 on the GRR to PGD route, there has been no service from Punta Gorda to Michigan since Direct Air services AZO to PGD. I would love to see G4 A319's at AZO.

I wouldn't say that it's only MEM involved. When G4 makes a big announcement, they announce multiple routes at once, and not all from new cities. Last time they had a "big announcement", not only were the new cities of IND and PIT announced, but they also connected a few dots in the G4 network. G4 is receiving several A32x right now and later this year while keeping the MD-80 fleet level, which will help with growth.

One should not forget that G4 also holds their annual airport conference at their suburban Vegas headquarters around this time every year, with both existing and potential new cities sending reps to the conference. Not everyone gets lucky from these conferences, but airports can and do announce new routes immediately after the conference. For example, FWA announced G4 service to both MYR and PGD after attending these conferences, as did SBN and two others with service to PGD at the same time that FWA got service.

Of course, I'm hoping for the return of FWA-LAS, in part because fuel prices are once again making it viable and because the FWACAA has said that it's the only new route that they are focused on getting in 2015 (they mostly want to focus on existing routes). But that's just me with an interest in their hometown airport - nothing special.

Have to wonder if LCK might be involved somehow. They've gone great guns there of late, going from two to six destinations (FLL, MYR, MSY, PGD added fairly recently), and I'm curious to see if they ever try LAS.

Maybe they'll add a new route to SAN to compete with their measly 2x weekly, Summer Seasonal, MD-83 to BLI. SAN is a beach destination, and G4 carries a fair amount of beach traffic from smaller cities.

If its a big announcement maybe it is a buildup at SAN and PSP?

Not too familiar with G4 yet but I will be flying them for the first time next week on their new IND-LAS route. On their 757 too, excited even tho it is an ULCC.

I caught up with a friend this weekend who works in route planning at Allegiant, and he told me "I've been busy - we're announcing new routes next week."

Definitely routes, but he didn't give any indication as to which ones.

How likely is MKE to be involved in this? I get DL and F9 have picked up some Florida traffic, but WN is leaving MKE-RSW in June I believe.

If it is indeed CAK I would expect them to pull out of YNG and possibly start a LAS flight. WN had it before but stopped it, I could imagine a reboot. No one I know at CAK has heard anything about it yet though.

I don't know how the new OMA-PIE route looks but I was trying to think of other routes that could work for Allegiant from OMA. MCO is already seasonally served on WN, LAX is too. WN to LAS is 3x daily and PHX has both WN and US on it. That doesn't leave much. FLL is too thin, as is RSW. On the other hand, I think SAN-OMA would perform quite nicely!! The only other is MSY, it would need to be VERY seasonal though.

I wonder if G4 will relaunch TZ routes from PIE. PIE-LAS,LAX that would be awesome. Im not sure how TZ did on those routes, i flew them a few times and always seemed to be full

If it is indeed CAK I would expect them to pull out of YNG and possibly start a LAS flight.

G4 serves three airports in central Illinois - BMI, PIA, and SPI - that triangulate at about an equal distance from each other. Likewise, existing service to FWA and CVG didn't stop G4 from starting IND, a traditional rival to both FWA and CVG.

So just because G4 might start CAK doesn't mean that they will automatically pull out of YNG. In fact, because of WN's dominance at CAK, I could see a big following for G4 there regardless of what they do at YNG.

They already did one recently - IND.

The other big PIE route for TZ was MDW, and I could see G4 giving WN a challenge to PIE, PGD, and SFB there (though because of MDW's short runway, they would have to be A32x routes).

Maybe just wishing, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a CAK-MSY flight to service the CLE/CAK-MSY market (no more direct service), as they are doing in the CVG and CMH/LCK -MSY city pairs. Anything past that probably would be Florida or LAS although competition has increased from CLE post UA, PHX too. I'd be surprised if a metro area of around 600k were left abandoned of any airline service again as in the case of YNG as speculated above, although the potential CLE market is much more conveniently tapped into by CAK.

I honestly don't think it would be LAS. I honestly think MYR and PGD with MYR being seasonal. Being these both overlap with service at YNG, It could run opposite days from CAK/YNG.

And i know some people at CAK, and its going around.

They just started PIT too. So i don't think distance bothers them because PIT/YNG is the same distance as YNG/CAK.

They added PIT a few months back. YNG has been analyzing the numbers and they've seen no drop off as a result of PIT. CAK should be no different.

Likewise, even though G4 started IND service recently, their FWA spring break schedule is actually slightly bigger than it was in 2014. I don't think the addition of IND to the network is hurting G4 at FWA one bit - otherwise, the schedule at FWA wouldn't have grown from spring break 2014.

G4 knows their markets very well. If they fly to more than one airport that's within driving distance of another served by them, they tend to price service similarly, and often identically, between airports. And if a leisure traveler is faced with a choice of a closer or farther away airport on G4 for the same destination, similar or identical dates, and a similar or identical fare, they'll take the closer airport to their home - and G4 knows it. That is part of the reason why close-by airports can coexist in the G4 network - and a reason (though commissions from package sales are a major part as well) why G4 is consistently profitable.

If this is a "big" announcement, can we expect at least a focus city in MEM for G4?

I'd expect something along the lines of the initial announcements for CVG, IND, and PIT. 3 or 4 cities to start, with Florida for sure and maybe LAS and/or seasonal MYR as well.

Rumors around G4 is this is the year they will begin international service, so it could be something along those lines. Also it was announced to the pilot group that AVL will be summer base for crews, so I would expect announcements for routes out of AVL. Lots of exciting things happening, growth wise at G4!

There is my predicted IND-MYR seasonal add as well.

Allegiant may be able to pull folks from areas like Jackson TN to Little Rock AR with these Memphis routes. It certainly gives Arkansans flexibility if the flight days are different than Little Rock's Allegiant flights to Orlando. Like the Little Rock LAX service as well. It's year round, right? If XNA could be so lucky.

Myrtle Beach to Clarksburg, VA (seasonal)

Clarksburg is in WV

Los Angeles to Boise

I am surprised at this. Seems to be a plethora of options already. Guess they figure vacationers will come to them.
Hope it succeeds

FLL-JQF? I didn't realize JQF even had a pax terminal. But I guess they do. Looks like G4 already serves SFB on and off a few times a week.

They don't. Well, they have a small terminal, but it's not set up for airline use. G4 uses a converted hangar for their pax operation. There was some talk about building a new terminal on the other side of the field, but I haven't heard anything about that recently.

All of these routes are 2X per week with the exception of Myrtle Beach to Pittsburgh which shows as 3X/week.

What's being cancelled to fund this.

G4 has 10 aircraft deliveries in 2015, 7 A319s and 3 A320s. The low utilization rates on their fleet also makes it easier to ramp up seasonal routes like many of these.

Interesting to see them go into Hilton Head/Savannah.

What's even more interesting is that G4 served SAV-FLL for a while, with FLL as the destination. (It didn't last.) Now, with these new routes, SAV is the destination, and I anticipate that this second time around at SAV will be much better as a result. And I'm not surprised that over half the new routes are seasonal, nor am I surprised at IND-MYR as MYR has been offering incentives for IND service for a while. (I don't expect it to hurt FWA-MYR, either. Both areas have a ton of traffic to MYR.)

I am very surprised at no additional AZA routes in this round, given how big and important AZA is to G4. I was expecting both IND-AZA and LCK-AZA by now. Maybe in the inevitable fall route announcements?

I would love to see (and I think it would be successful) a twice weekly CHA-LAS route. Maybe once they have more A319/320's we will see it...

Ohio-Savannah flights should do very well in the summer as the entirety of Hilton Head Island turns into Ohio/Michigan/New York/Pennsylvania in the summers. You can sit in traffic for two hours trying to get on or off the island on a Saturday changeover. Flying what used to (is still?) US/Piedmont Dash8s into HHH is tricky as they can't sell all of the seats and they are weight restricted due to the runway length.

G4 also serves PIE 2x a week from JQF, in addition to 4x a week to SFB. Not bad to be at 8 flights a week in less than 2 years for an airport with no previously scheduled service. I know the airport/city folks were hoping for LAS. I would think the next opportunity would be PGD.

A new terminal was talked about opposite side of the field, but now they're looking at the SW side of the field where the 737 flights board during NASCAR season.
