Value Of LO/OU To Star Alliance?

Thu Feb 26, 2015 6:30 pm

With Europe, the Mediterranean rim and intercontinental destinations comprehensively covered by Europe-based Star Alliance members Lufthansa, SAS, Swiss and Turkish, what do LOT and Croatia Airlines 'bring to the table' that other members of the Alliance do not?

A greater market share. Airline alliances are not just a matter of number of destinations served. Smaller airlines like LO (5 million annual passengers) and OU (1.8 million annual passengers) give Star a greater market share in their respective home markets. LO and OU bring more passengers to other Star members.

Well said.

They also bring access to some cities in Eastern Europe and the Balkans which other alliance members do not cover (nor do other alliances in the case of the LO or OU networks). I have experienced that greater reach by *A first-hand when travelling to these sub-regions of Europe. Incidentally, having Adria and Aegean Airlines also contribute to the alliance in this same way.

I have always thought LO were a decent member of Star. I was sorry when they pulled out of DUB. They had a very good network via WAW to many of the places you mention above with decent fares too. Hopefully one day they return. I used them many times DUB-WAW-ATH on the E Jet and it was the best way to go.

It helps that Adria, LOT, and Croatia all use the LH M&M FF program already.

The oddball one is Luxair - they're a fully integrated M&M airline but somehow still hasn't been invited into the alliance.

And that's probably one of the longest intra-Europe route that an airline can do. It goes to the point that Europe has an extreme density in terms of both number of countries (and population) for a relatively small land mass. Its the continent with by far the largest number of commercial airlines per square kilometer (or any other unit of land). The fact that *A has amalgamated as a big a share of the airlines in the continent gives those carriers a lot of scale.
