When Will AF Receive Their 789s?

Sun Mar 01, 2015 9:57 am

Hi,

finally, when will AF receive their 789s?
Which destinations will they serve?
Any idea about the config?

Thanks

Interesting question. I can't find more info then this on wiki:

'' On 23 September 2011, Air France-KLM announced their order of 50 Airbus A350/Boeing 787's with 60 options. The first Boeing 787–9 will enter into service with KLM in 2016 and the first Airbus A350–900 will enter into service with Air France in 2018. Later, both airlines will operate both types of aircraft.''

We now know btw that KLM will receive it's first 789 in Oct 2015.

At one point, AD was meant to receive their first 787 before KLM

Air France is scheduled to receive its first 4 789s in 2017. Given AF is in continual restructuring, this may change. Actually, i would say this will change. Any route discussions at this stage would be pure speculation.

Air France will receive its first 789 in Oct. 2016, about & year earlier than planned.

4 more aircraft are scheduled between Oct. 2016 and March 2017.
Configuration will be 30 J / 21W / 2xx Y (I saw the seat map but don't remember exactly). This is more or less the same seat capacity than the A343 that they will replace on a 1 on 1 basis.
The retirement of the A343s will begin this year, with F-GLZC, scheduled to leave the fleet in Sept.

No.
KLM will get its first B789 this Oct. 2015
And I'm telling you that AF will get its first B789 one year ahead of schedule, in Oct. 2016

Any idea if the J-seat is the same as the new LC "Best" being applied to the 777/77W fleet?

Will the 789 be able to fly SXM-CDG nonstop, considering its an A343 destination? If so can't wait to see that fly in over Maho beach! Those A343 cabins are dated, it would be nice to finally have them out of the fleet, and a fresh new aircraft in the AF fleet.

I doubt ... SXM is far from being a premium or priority route for AF.
I don't have any information yet on the first destinations but I gues it should be somewhere in the US or Canada as often for AF with a new aircraft... Then it should be deployed on the very lucrative African and South American routes I guess ...

I understand that SXM is not the most premium or lucrative route, but once the A343 is out of the fleet they would require an aircraft with the capabilities of flying nonstop. Considering the 789 is exact replacement, I assumed it would be the most capable aircraft. The A332 could also be used nonstop, but its a much more premium heavy configuration, and I don't think the 77ER/77W could make the journey nonstop and would also be too large of an aircraft.

As a twin, the B789 won't be able to operate SXM-CDG nonstop due to the restriction on take off in case of an engine failure.
The A343 could be replaced by a B77W, with a refueling stop somewhere on the flight back to CDG, as it used to be when AF was opertaing a B742 on the route (CDG-SXM-SDQ-CDG)... But maybe by the time the last A343 is retired, the Rwy at SXM will be lengthened and the problem solved !

But what about the A332 (outside the premium-heavy config for AF) ? Air Caraîbes is flying non-stop an A330 ORY-SXM-ORY, so obviously some twins can make it.

And Air Caraîbes TX has ordered three A35J directly from Airbus and three A359 from lessor ILFC to fly Caribbean routes including SXM-ORY. Not sure which model for St Maarten but clearly TX think they can sufficiently fill an A350 between SXM and ORY. Presumably these planes will be shared between Corsair and TX, maybe the A35J will replace the SS 744's.

Any idea if these are some of the 10 leased from Aercap or has Boeing managed to find earlier slots for the 25 AF/KL ordered directly? KL was to receive 9 787s in 2016 and 5 in 2017, which seemed quite a lot of aircraft for an airline like KL. Perhaps some of these have been reallocated to AF?

KL is supposed to get 7 A350s from 2019 onwards. But things may have changed recently. Some aircraft deliveries have been deferred recently, pretty sure these concern some 787 deliveries for KL and 77W deliveries for AF. No idea if and how A350 deliveries were affected.

The order was placed for AF-KL ... The B787-9 had to be identical in their conception (toilets, galleys, cockpit equipements) so they could be allocated "at the last moment" either to KL or AF. The first aircraft AF will receive were indeed initially scheduled for KL

The rumour was that the A350 would finally all go to KLM ... We have no news about that.
The only confirmation we have is that the A343 will be retired as quick as possible, while the A332 will remain active until 2022 minimum, that's why they will be fitted with the new "Best & Beyond" seats starting summer 2016, along with the A380.
