tv dude says they landed on 31....

As for the left wing, close up of left wing shows fencing wrapped around the end of it,
so wouldn't surprise me if the wing tanks are leaking

Thrust reversers.

Looks like everyone was lucky; got off without serious injuries; just a few minor injuries reported.

Acft doesn't look badly damaged at all.

If they decide to fix it, they will need a wing from one of the AA MD-83s they have stored. Starboard wing appears to have suffered some major damage.

CNN reported that part of the wing is damaged (L or R?) and that jet fuel is leaking. Obviously the nose gear must have collapsed.

According to the ATC, they were landing on 13, overran the end of 13 where the 31 indication is for the runway going the other way. Go frangible concrete - probably helped keep them out of Flushing Bay. Would be cool to see pictures of the concrete after the incident when things are cleared off.

Emergency exit. The tail cone pops off on purpose. Same system on the DC-9.

I read somewhere that embankment was built up to keep planes from the bay as well.

Not what i meant... I asked if the exit was actually being used or if the impact knocked the tail cone off.

Runway 13 does indeed have an EMAS system in place, but with this much snow/ice covering it I doubt it works.

FYI Runway directions are typically determined by the TRACON, N90. Not LGA Tower. This is due to the impacts on the other NY area airports. IIRC using rwy 13 at LGA closes TEB.

I really doubt the impact knocked it off, but it was being used as an emergency exit yes. It's fastened very well, and it is jettisoned off and it provides a slide as well. Strange thing is I can't see the slide anywhere. Might have been removed after the fact to ease evacuation because the tail was so close to the ground anyway. But that's just speculation.

N909DL. . Moderate damage, probably repairable. Special thanks to my flight attendant colleagues for a textbook evacuation including the use of the tail cone exit. Always HATED that drill in training every year!

Especially happy that no one seems to be seriously injured.

There is an evacuation slide located in the tailcone but it is a dark, narrow metal catwalk that you have to crouch very low to gain access to the area because there is a large, heavy metal beam that goes straight across the area that you have to get under without braining yourself. The exit/tail cone/slide is automatically armed for every takeoff and disarmed after a normal landing.

CNN's David Soucie FOS as usual stating 1086 hit the berm at 100 mph. My guess maybe 40 mph?
