QF 747-400 VH-OJA Retires & Gets Preserved

Sun Mar 08, 2015 4:34 am

While already being discussed on the Australian aviation thread i figure this deserves it's own thread for everyone's enjoyment.

QF's first 747-400 VH-OJA has been retired and was ferried as QF7474 to a regional airport where it will be put on display. QF has donated it to the Historical aircraft restoration society at Illawarra regional airport for preservation. Aside from being the first 744 for QF it also set a longest distance record flying London - Sydney in a little under 20 hours. It's nice to see a bit of Australian & 747 history being retired in such a way.

The Australian aviation thread:

With a 747-400 now going on display i'm starting to feel old

RE: QF 747-400 VH-OJA Retires & Gets Preserved

Sun Mar 08, 2015 8:18 am

I have written a fairly detailed recount of the day and my talks with the pilots, in the Australian Aviation thread.

In short, an amazing day. I stood at the very end of the runway to the north, with OJA landing directly over the top of me in a ST Maartens-meets-Albion Park type situation.

Huge crowds, much bigger than expected, were present and cheering loudly. Where I was, the were three spontaneous cheers for Qantas and VH-OJA after she touched down.

VH-OJA touched down at exactly 7:47am local time...

I went on to the Tarmac after she landed and taxied to the stand, and spent a couple of hours poring over her and speaking with the pilots.

I saw VH-OJA land at the end of her historic nonstop LHR-SYD delivery flight all this years ao, having taken a day off school to do so. My best mate was with me then. I also watched VH-OJA land at the end of her shortest and last flight today with the same lifelong best mate. We were both emotional. It was amazing seeing a significant plane, named after our national capital, land on her delivery flight and her retirement flight.

It was truly amazing. A brilliant move by Qantas and HARS.

Cheers,
Bunumuring.

Thanks for the YouTube link. I know we all have special relationships with airlines and aircraft, but only Australians know what it's like to see a QANTAS aircraft at LHR or LAX, knowing it's going to take you home to the other side of the world.

Kudos!

Like KLM having cooperated with regards to preserving their B742 at Lelystad!

Thanks for sharing those links.

Some of the vidoes and pictures are amazing, as well as the stories.

The final flight of an aircraft always makes me kind of sad but in a proud way?

We can argue...

I recorded it on my equipment as 7:47:53. I was using two DSLRs, an iPhone and an iPad, all with synchronized times...
Absolutely not 7:57 as stated above and as further confirmed by 777jet.
My mate with me also recorded it as 7:47.

In any case, a great photo taken by aussiepomm.

My favourite photo seen so far was taken from the Haywards Bay Overpass, with VH-OJA nearing touchdown and seemingly disappearing KaiTak-style into buildings, trees and people, with the Illawarra Highway roundabout signpost prominent on the left to assert it's location, and the Escarpment towering above all in the backgroumd. The photo is in today's Illawarra Mercury newspaper. A wonderful photo that to me best summed up the location, the crowds and the atmosphere of the landing.

Thanks,
Bunumuring.

Thanks for that link. The go-pro cockpit footage is amazing. What a short takeoff roll. It was good to see the crew doing 'their thing' as well after the landing.

It sure was an exciting and monumental day for Qantas, The City of Wollongong, HARS and Australia.
It was the first of 30 aircraft which changed Qantas and how Australia was connected to the world. It enabled one stop flights to Europe and non stop flights to Los Angeles.

Anyway here are a couple of really good videos of VH-OJA on approach, landing, and being towed back to its spot on the apron.

Absolutely awesome, a fitting end to flying for this grand old lady of the skies. Again well done to QF and HARS, this is so great to preserve this amazing piece of aviation history. I'll have to get down and have a look at her myself soon.

The times from the Qantas Integrated Ops centre apparently -

Departed at 0722 (presume that was the off blox time from the maintenance area)

Airborne at 0736

Wheels down at 0748

On blocks at 0810

Cheers BZF

Question: Was OJA aquired new from Boeing or from another source? LHRSYD as a delivery flight suggests the latter.

It was new from Boeing. It was delivered SEA-LHR-SYD as a stunt, to show off their shiny new jet by flying London to Sydney non-stop. Even today that would be significant, but in 1989 was absolutely mind-blowing.

Not only that, But it also featured at the 1989 Farnborough Airshow where it flew at low level, pulling some impressive manoeuvrers.
If I recall correctly OJA was the first B747-400 with Rolls Royce Engines, hence Rolls Royce and Qantas promoted this.

It's funny that a plane famous for it's longest flight, should have probably it's shortest flight into retirement.

As a Pom, I get a buzz out of seeing a Qantas aircraft at LHR, I always have done since seeing a 742 in the late 1970s at LHR. Finally flew one in 2011.....my next flight on one in May will be my 50th.

Never flew on OJA, but I would always see her in SIN or SYD when passing through like an old friend, so I'll have to go and look her up in her new home one day.
