Man Arrested For Pointing Laser At Aircraft

Tue Mar 10, 2015 8:08 pm

A man was arrested Monday for pointing a laser beam at aircraft arriving into LGA, and at a NY police helicopter.

Quote:
The weapon was a black tubular laser, small enough to slip into the front pocket of a pair of pants.

But its pinpoint beam of light, when aimed at aircraft in the dark skies over New York City on Monday night, was powerful enough to injure the eyes of three pilots — including two officers in a New York Police Department helicopter — jeopardizing their ability to fly safely, the authorities said.

After the Federal Aviation Administration alerted the police to the skyward-pointing laser beam flashing across the cockpits of several commercial jetliners taking off and landing at La Guardia Airport, officers saw it emanating from an apartment on Coddington Avenue in the Bronx, the police said.

Laser beams get wider and wider with distance, so by the time they reach the height of an aircraft, it can be wide enough to hit the whole cockpit. What is with this obsession of pointing lasers at aircraft anyway? People should know not to point it in someone's eye, so what makes them think it's okay to point it at an aircraft full of people?

Doubt anyone thinks it's okay, they are just idiots.

Hopefully the punishment is severe enough so he is made an example of.
I'm sure this thread will take off soon

Not really. Lasers are monochromatic and scatter very little in air as a consequence. So a laser beam spot will remain extremely bright and intense even at a very large distance from its source. An intense laser spot from the ground hitting a pilot's eyes can cause blindness, and that is what makes it dangerous.

Heard on the radio (1010 WINS) that the charges were dropped basically because two other members of this guy's family came forward to say no, *they* were the ones pointing the laser at planes. In the end the DA decided they couldn't prove who actually did it, they could only prove who owned the pointer and that wasn't enough.

Likely interested to see if the laser will 'shine that far' with an airplane being a distant target, without any thought about how bright the beam still is to pilots (or passengers) even from a great distance. Typical example of people not considering consequence.

Yet these same people would likely never think of throwing a brick from a bridge onto a car, to see if they could hit the car, because consequence would already be known.

Unfortunately, I think you may be correct. But one would think that with the publicity past arrests have received one would have figured out that it's a no-no.
