727's In The USA

Thu Mar 12, 2015 3:58 am

Hello, I am not sure if this has been covered in the past but I am wondering if anyone is still operating a 727. I know major airlines aren't and most cargo operators aren't as well. Is there anyone who knows of an operator that is still flying them even as a corporate jet.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you!

I see one across the field at LAX, Maybe the Ex-Forbes 727-100. And Raython has their 727-200 next door to us. I think there is still a 727-200F in HNL running around. HTH

Kalitta Charters still operates 7 of them, IFL Group/Contract Air Cargo has 3, Sierra West Airlines recently acquired a couple, and USA Jet also supposedly purchased one. I'm sure there are more, but those ones I know off the top of my head.

Attached is a link to the FAA registry search database. You can search by aircraft type.

Roush Racing in CLT has two beautiful 727-200s, but they have been inactive so far this NASCAR season and it doesn't look good. An FA friend who has worked there part time for ten years says they are going up for sale.

Asia Pacific Airlines (cargo) has a few (?) 727's based (?) at HNL... I've even seen them painting the cowls by hand (looked like a house brush with house paint  )

There are 2 727-200's stored at KDAL for years now,

they're parked on the far northeast edge of the airfield ,

you can see them huddled together, their noses poking out over the fence

overlooking Lemmon Avenue...

Paradigm owns them. They flew various sports teams like the Rockets but those teams now use 737's.

I guess he decided chartering is cheaper than operating a couple of 727s. I'll be sad to see them leave CLT.

I'm not sure if its still there anymore, but there's an all white 727 at HOU. I heard somewhere that it was used as a Houston Rockets charter

What a very sad thread.

I remember when the 727 used to dominate the USA skies...and no other aircraft has ever been that dominant.

I don't know what it's up to these days, but that was probably N104HR. It's blocked on FlightAware, and there are no recent photos here or the "other" big aviation photo site. I caught it bringing the Rockets to CLT in January 2013.

They stopped FRG about 3 years ago, not a good airport with horses on board! Moved those flights to ISP.

Coyotes 727 is parked too, that was ran by the same company that did the Rockets 727.

I'd take the non-EFIS one over the EFIS one. The only glass that belongs in the 727 cockpit are the windshields.

The Fry's Electronics group has a 727 that is used on a regular basis to fly the San Jose Sharks during the NHL season. It is also used in the off season to transport company execs and do tours of the Bay Area.

Oh believe me, I was flying it. The landing distance was the problem. 14 being displaced left only 6100' available, doing an ILS in the rain to mins at near max landing weight for that distance was sporty. It's no problem if you have people in the back getting into the brakes and reversers, 21 horses standing up, not a good thing for them and for me it was always about keeping them comfortable and happy.

I don't know what it's up to these days, but that was probably N104HR.

During the Super Bowl week in PHX this February, N104HR was the 727-200 parked on the northwestern side of the field. It has a very thin pinstripe that's been added to the otherwise all-white scheme.

Best looking airliner....ever. I flew on them tons of times when I was a kid, with PWA...also one of the nicest liveries ever.

The 738 and A320 are better than it by a mile in every metric, except aesthetics.

....and now, back to the real topic.

One of their advantages was that it could operate off of unimproved airstrips. I seem to recall that a bunch of them were flying out of Africa.

Nothing worse than having to go to DTW to clear customs before heading back to PTK. Easily added an hour to your day.

Or in this case 2 hours, given the 1/8-1/4 inch of ice we had to knock off the aircraft before they could leave for PTK.

Trick is calling the airport in sight as soon as you got off the ground before you went into the clouds if they were at 3-4000' otherwise they would vector you all over. Had the tower more or less dare us saying we could get off quicker if we turned inside the tower off 21R in a Lear one day, we made them proud!
