JFK Single Runway Ops

Thu Mar 12, 2015 12:21 pm

As predicted...and on the first day of the month long 31R runway closure, JFK has winds gusting to 30 knots and is currently down to single runway operations to 31L

Line for takeoff around 30 aircraft at 715am ET

FAA website already posting delays at JFK

Winds should calm down below crosswind limits later today

Going to be a long month at JFK closing 31R

This is the wrong time of year to do it...with stiff NW winds with each cold front passage

I'm not sure there is a good time of year to close a runway at any major airport....Isn't LAX doing major runway work this year as well? It's work that has to be done, just have to deal with it.

never a good time

This is a bad time with NW winds

Currently holding all departures on ramps for metering

Taxi delays of 1.5 to 2 hours

Closure and construction doesn't start til the 16th, and will last 6 weeks. Today is intermittent closure for pre-work.

Just saw on FR24 AA 1260 diverting, not sure if it has anything to do with this

Edit: diverted to PHL, with normal squawk, no emergency

[Edited 2015-03-12 06:51:59]

But, there are lots of holdings, the wind still strong from NW

And this is the second time in a week

The wisdom of closing a northwest runway in March in NY astounds me

So if there is strong SE winds, does get mean the airport will close?

Winds in the NYC area tend to favor SW NE or NW.

It is rare to get a strong SE wind that would be above the cross wind limitations for 22L and 22R. It would happen during strong storms with a warm front passing through the region.

If they couldn't use the VOR to 13R in that situation (below mins), then yes, the airport would have to shut down to arrivals as the only other option is ILS 13L.

So basically any summer rainstorm with high winds will close down JFK.
Always wonderers if this "last and final boarding call" is in fact THE last and final boarding call.

This project ends May 1

Then the big project (replacing 22R) begins. You would be smart to avoid JFK through September

Starting around noon today, JFK will be forced down to single runway ops and will stay there through the forecast period.

This will be the longest stretch yet and the third instance in a week of single runway ops at JFK.

This has got to be hurting B6, AA and DL. Lots of extended delays and even some cancellations as they try and thin out the operation. Unfortunately this is NYC and lord knows the PANYNJ set it up so their buddies are working the construction. Probably mob union too. I will be avoiding JFK all summer.

This has to be killing them. Third time in 9 days with single runway ops and second time this week with 4 hour delays

To also give some project info

Using historical weather they projected single runway ops 4 to 5 times over 6 weeks

Obviously 3 times in 9 days (once for prelim construction before project even began) shows those estimates will be missed

Per the Port Authority, I'd say for the remainder of 2015 is a more accurate view:

"Construction began in July 2014 and will continue through December 2015. Runway 4L-22R will be closed beginning June 1, 2015, and ending in December 2015 to facilitate the completion of the project. With the exception of these closures, the airport shall maintain operation of three runways during the reconstruction and rehabilitation project."

Horrible news for JFK travelers and the large incumbent carriers AA, DL, B6.

That's the latest forecast.

Looks like single runway ops at JFK continues through the night and into midday tomorrow. Yikes. With a capital Y!

Gonna be lots of heavy metal in BDL SWF PHL BOS

Currently in a Ground Stop with 4 hour 11 min delays

The wind's been howling all night last night and is still going strong today...
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world

Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own

I feel like I should be surprised at just how badly the PA handles the airports but I grew up in Jersey. I'm surprised it works as well as it does knowing PANYNJ. Hands down the biggest crooks out there.

For the duration of the project, it seems to me that flying between New York and the West Coast, going in and out of LGA and making a connection at ORD, DTW, MSP, DFW, or ATL or flying out of EWR would be better than risking delays at JKF because of single runway ops.

LAX has scheduled their work pretty wisely. The 25L fix is being done before marine layer season. Then 24R is being done after it. Then the take off runways aren't nearly as important for capacity.
