It's military. They did the opposite trip a few weeks ago. Sounds like they're heading back to BDL/BOS now.

It's happening. Saw it internally at DL.
Ship 6309 has flight numbers: DL9970 to SJC, DL8966 to BOS and DL8966 to DTW.
Ship 6310 has flight numbers: DL8825 to SJC, DL8965 to BDL, and DL8826 to DTW.
They should start showing up on FlightAware tonight or early tomorrow. Have fun!

Ship #6310 meanwhile is currently at DTW, according to FlightAware. So is it operating a ferry flight to NRT first, before it heads out across the Pacific Ocean as DL8825? Seems like a waste to fly all that way to NRT empty, but someone's obviously paying for it!

6309 is indeed flying PVG-NRT before heading to SJC.
6310 will ferry DTW-SJC. See routings above.

No it is definetly a troop transport day here. This same route happened a few weeks earlier although the 747's went to SFO.

I'm surprised DL doesn't have a very strict policy against sharing military charter flight information, I know most other airlines do. My airline will fire you for sharing that information.

In their defense, did DL "say" anything about it being a military charter? If I read the above right, there is knowledge added here from those who know somehow that they are military charters. I'd say DL is totally fine, since as a company they weren't saying "hey we're flying some troops today, come check it out!".

Unfortunately, I wasn't in position to get photos of the arrivals. I did see the inbound 744 from DTW fly overhead on final while I was driving down Almaden Boulevard in downtown SJ about ten minutes ago. It's a very neat sight watching it glide so close to all the office buildings.

It is likely just speculation that it is military since the reverse trip was done two weeks ago where uniformed military personnel were seen in public at the airport boarding the flight, but if that is true, it is obvious what this trip is for too. Also, if the military is on some top secret mission, they are not likely going to be giving Delta a call.

Most airlines always use the same flight numbers for charters. So if you happen to know that DL896X is a military charter, odds are pretty good that it's always going to be a military charter.
The information posted is available on FlightAware and other sources. We aren't giving out any company information that isn't public already.

There are two huge military training bases about 100mi south of SJC, Ft Hunter Liggett and Camp Roberts to the west of HWY 101.

I think the 20 or so busses with folks wearing military uniforms were a dead giveaway. There was also a post on twitter from people that work for the airport management that there were military movements.

The 744s both corkscrewed their way out of SJC, I saw them each depart 30 (not sure if L or R) and circle the east side of San Jose a bit before lunch time. I tried to snap a few photos from my office, but didn't have a camera with sufficient zoom on hand to take anything worth posting. I also saw a C-17 depart behind the second 744 following the same path.

Both departed on 30L. It was quite the show to see those big boys up so close. I can post up some pics when I get them off the sd card.

He saw aircraft assignment to that route internally at delta which another poster copied from delta.com a couple of hours later, minus the ship number, but that is on flightaware.com. He did not see an internal memo or intranet bulletin that it was a military charter, although it is obvious since they tend to follow a pattern.
