EWR Terminal B - How Is It?

Wed Mar 18, 2015 1:55 pm

Specifically how are the gate areas?

I keep thinking it is odd that the PA has focused on so much on check-in and arrivals, not to mention the plans for a new Terminal A. The gate areas in B are still all split up, behind separate security, in those old round satellites. These serve lots of intl pax with $$$ to spend - you'd think they'd want to make some changes.

What are your impressions of Terminal B departures? Can it compete with JFK's international terminals.

It is 90s modern. Perfectly useable

It can not compete with JFK as everything there is a decade or two newer

Ironically it was built when JFK was a real mess and thoughts were swirling that EWR would lead the region as JFKs best days were behind it

Why does it matter that the three piers in B have separate sterile areas? It's not like anybody is making a connection inside terminal B?

It means fewer places to kill time during a delay. Fewer options means less variety, which makes it harder to please different tastes when it comes to food, shopping ,etc. There is nothing worse than a delay behind security in a small terminal.

I thought the center and north satellites were connected behind security when the FIS opened. It has been quite a while since my last TATL from EWR; usually go to JFK (and I live in NJ, for what that tells you about my feelings for EWR).

Good question - does anyone know whether gate area B1 (gates B40-47) and gate area B2 (gates B51-57) are connected behind security?

I didn't think they were but it is possible. I recall taking an escalator up to FIS on arrival and I know the windows at immigration look out on the ramp between the two satellites, perhaps there is passageway beneath the FIS?

I flew Scandinavian Airlines over New Years out of Terminal B and to be honest it's really not that nice. It was better than I remember it a few years ago when I took the same flight but very limited dining/shopping and I wish I would have grabbed food in Terminal C before I took the bus over had I remembered how little options I had. It makes for a very boring wait if your flight gets delayed or you arrive super early. I guess one could always take the terminal bus if they want though. Just my two cents.

It's right behind LGA's CTB as arguably the worst terminal facility in the country. Filthy, tiny, terrible food options, dark, moving walk ways that work about 20% of the time. It's just awful. And since I started flying out of EWR in the early 2000s, almost nothing has improved. Typical Jersey: work on it and spend billions but do absolutely nothing

Security for the 40 gates at Terminal B has been greatly expanded/improved.

Post security at the 40 gates (Delta) you have Java Moon, Champp's, Sora Sushi, and Sandella's Flatbread grill.
And I think one more.
Not to mention Duty Free shops.

Before Security you have
Chili's too. City Point Bar, Currito's Burritos, Dunkin Donuts, Famous Famiglia, Mediteratian Bistro,
Subway, Wendy's and maybe one or two more.

Give Delta a try out of EWR, we would love to have you!
We have CDG/AMS and soon LHR with dozens of onward connections.

Happen to be sitting in the BA lounge at EWR terminal B as we speak. I think it's a nice, manageable terminal, well-run, and reasonably laid out.

This was my quote. I'm invested in B6's loyalty program so when we have flown TATL lately it has been with their partners (EI & FI).

So DL will fly to AMS, CDG and LHR with its own metal? That's interesting given that KL, AF and VS are all your partners. I assume your flights and theirs are code shared with one another? Always wondered how that makes sense economically/operationally although I know AA/BA are doing the same at JFK.

Am I wrong that AA had EWR-LHR at one time?

You are correct that AA had this route for a while. They even used the A300 on it for a time! I think they pulled it soon after 9/11.

LGA? The Central Terminal is disgusting. Thankfully they're working on the new one.
EWR is not as bad but it's close. Renovations have been going on for a decade and there has been some improvement but overall it's still a dump. I can't think of any worse facilities in the country and I've been to most.

Delta gates aren't bad (I go through once a month at least). SkyClub is decent, as noted there's Champps and Sora, never more than a 5-10 minute line for TSA. I'd love to see the moving walkway that has been out of service for seemingly 2 years now come back on, but that's really my only complaint.

Is it something to write home about? No. Is it more than sufficient? Yeah, I'll take it, especially over the long walks of Terminal 4 at JFK.

I agree 100% about LGA/CTB but EWR Terminal B I feel is nowhere nearly as bad.

EWR Terminal B isn't great post-security. Pre-security isn't bad there's quite a few places to kill time and/or eat something. Flew out of there last year on LH and wasn't impressed once I was at the gate area.

EWR A is far worse than B. But since most of UA's flights depart out of C, it hardly matters. JFK T2 is already a good example that's much worse than EWR C.
