"(Reuters) - An Airbus plane operated by Lufthansa's Germanwings budget airline crashed in southern France on Tuesday en route from Barcelona to Duesseldorf, police and aviation officials said.

The local La Provence newspaper said the Airbus A320 was carrying 142 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew, citing aviation officials.

Germanwings and Lufthansa were not immediately available for a comment. Airbus had no immediate comment."

Just heard about it. No further News available. Just crashed in southern France from Barcelona.

Oh my dear the poor passengers and Crew. Sounds like a lot of dead People.

The flight track looks like something has gone completely wrong... It descended into the Alps and then just disappeared.

Still hoping the best for all those involved, I can't believe this right now Wow!

Edit: I just read on the Guardian article that they allegedly sent a distress call about 10 minutes before disappearing from the radar

As per the FR24 track, It appears to be steady 10-minute descent from FL380.

D-AIPX was delivered to Lufthansa on the 5th of February 1991.

The A320 has an impeccable safety record... But this is the second accident involving the type in a few months.

It doesn't look good...

Germanwings Airbus A320 apparently has crashed in the southern France near Digny, about 30 miles south east of Marseilles, 142 pax/crew on board. Reports verifying debris. Was at cruising altitude prior to its crash. Weather normal, no serious issues.

The FR24 data is interesting. Once it hit the coast, it dropped from cruising altitude and speed (but not precipitously or loss of track, but still a somewhat aggressive 3000fpm descent) until the track ends at 09:42 at 6800', at about 370kt, with no significant deviations from the flight path. That's really got me wondering what happened there. Seems an IFE would have had them try to land in Marseille.

Strange flightpath according to FR24, does not look like a dive, but more like a steep descent with almost constant speed.

That's what shocked me also watching the data. Plane doesn't change course, loses altitude at a constant rate.

Will be interesting to see what contact was made, as 10 minutes seems to be enough time to advise the control tower, unless there was a decompression and the crew/pax were unable to make contact.
