GOL Airlines Interested In Foreign Ownership

Thu Mar 26, 2015 6:39 am

Surprised that this has not been mentioned on the Forum. GOL Airlines is open to being taken over by foreign carriers.

Quote:
Brazil’s biggest airline is opening the door to a potential suitor with a stock restructuring that will allow greater foreign ownership....Shareholders of Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA voted Monday to approve a measure that will reduce its dependence on the controlling Constantino family. Non-voting shareholders also gained the ability to hold board seats. That may increase Gol’s appeal to investors from abroad or even lead to an eventual takeover of the $830 million carrier, among the cheapest in the Americas.

Could LATAM bid on G3 or is that too much concentration even with Azul, and Avianca in the Brazilian market?

GOL needs an ME3 type bailout. If they don't rapidly decrease capacity in the Brazilian domestic market ASAP and change their mindset; GOL could potentially collapse which would benefit LATAM, O6 and AD. O6 and AD are relatively small carriers in the Brazilian market compared to GOL and TAM. AD is also facing significant issues in the Brazilian market and is slashing capacity system-wide.

This seems like a project Delta might be interested in.

DL needs to buy G3 and and initiate an overhaul/restructuring to return the carrier to profitability aka VS. The carrier could then be operated as a wholly-owned DL subsidiary.

They could give Etihad a call.

On a serious note, what is the current financial situation in GOL?

Im not sure what you mean by ME3 bailout? What would be the difference between EY buying out G3 and LA/JJ doing the same thing? Seems to me that LATAM could integrate G3 into a more comprehensive network.

The article states that DL is cautious at this time due to the fact the economic slowdown, increased competition, and G3's loses would show up on DL's financials.

Wonder if WN would be interested in something like this...they would have a huge foothold in S. America and they have the cash to do it with! 737 fleet comparability too.

Since TAP is also for sale, GOL and TAP could be merged to form a giant airline in the Portuguese speaking comunity.

The Brazilian regulators (CADE) would never approve a LATAM take-over of its main competitor for obvious reasons.

GOL's network does not complement LATAM's network. LATAM competes directly with GOL on so many routes (specifically domestic Brazil) that it would not create a more comprehensive network. Plus LATAM operates a narrow-body fleet consisting solely of A320 family a/c (excluding a few Dash-8s which are leaving the fleet this year) and is committed to A320 family a/c. The list goes on and on...

Recently, AV Brasil, GOL and Azul stated that they are not interested in TAP at this time.

Some out-of-the-box comments here::
G3 complements CM, G3 have fleet commonality with both CM and WN but G3 model looks a bit like WNś.
On the subject of CM and G3, If Panama and Brazil have open skies, IMHO, CM interest in G3 might be the premium Brazilian domestic and regional routes and becoming an even larger B737 operator. Not that much to operate more Brazil CM destinations - PTY CM hub routes.
I'm not on CM's payroll.

It’s a pleasure for me posting at my very first time discussing this with you guys. Gol had a strong cash for the end of 14 (BRL devaluation during 1Q/15 will hit that but is way to for of bailout) increasing margins. We can’t forget that early 12/13 Gol cut’s capacity while Tam and Azul were strongly adding cap.
