Air Canada Landing Accident At Halifax

"Air Canada flight 624 is believed to have crashed on a runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Canada, according to numerous social media reports. The plane reportedly hit power lines and sustained extensive damage upon crash-landing."

any truth to this report?

Halifax Chronicle-Herald reports that it was a runway overrun, no injuries. Also reporting that the power is out at the airport.

Flightradar24 identifies it as C-FTJP, an A320. Landed at 00.02 this morning, inbound from YYZ.

From what we are now seeing the term "crash" seems to be a bit misleading. RT is not exactly known for its accurate and thoughtful reporting. On a positive note it seems that there are no reports of injuries. Good news.

Reports include aircraft clipping powerlines. That would be a bit more than an overrun. Hitting static structures on the ground would usually count as an actual crash would it not?

No, I'm not going to speculate on any of the above. This just happened and all the info the media is getting is from pax and Twitter feeds. I've heard it hit power lines on approach, after going off the end, after exiting off the side, power lines across a road, power lines across the tarmac, one wing ripped completely off and, oh yeah, it crashed.......

How about we all give it little bit of time before we start measuring distances between the runway and power lines in the area that may, or may not have anything to do with this incident......

Based on what I am seeing from Google Street View from the looks of where lines are at either end of the main runway, my guess is they might have come in just a little too low? Again, speculation given I do not know Halifax that well and being an outsider but given the report of hitting power lines, I only see the small ones that are on the way in.

In my opinion this could be considered a crash. It may have slammed into the runway, not overrun it according to the photos.

Trying to figure out what runway they landed on. There is a 7,700 ft runway 32 but they might have been below minimums for that as it has no ILS, only RNAV. Runway 23 has a cat II ILS.

We lost a CRJ back in 1997 during a landing accident in Fredricton, NB. That a/c was landing in a snowstorm and departed the runway and slammed into a tree. Thankfully all survived.

There are power lines about 1,000 feet before the threshold of 32. If they hit those, that's quite an undershoot and I'm not sure if that means they plowed through the localizer antenna for 14 as well. Passenger said something like, "we hit power lines, there was a flash, and the plane bounced before eventually coming to a stop."

Approach chart for the LPV RNAV approach to runway 32 showing 1 mile vis minimum, metar at the time of landing apparently was 3/4 of a mile.

Hi! Yes the weather was not the best and Halifax last week received one of the worst snow storm in years and it was snowing again tonight, so it compounded somewhat. Good news there is no fatalities but some Injured Passengers though. But it seems nothing major. I live in the Atlantic Provinces here in Canada, it has been a hard winter for the Southern and North Eastern part of the Atlantic Provinces. Here in the North West we were more lucky, but the Siberian Cold was there everyday. Here is the complete article and latest news of this crash. Thanks and take care.

With only a 6 knot gust factor, windshear does't exactly jump out as a likely factor.

We are talking about a 24 year old A320 with very significant structural damage. It doesn't take an engineer to deduce that this one is a write off.

You can't believe everything you read...In the limited amount of pictures I've seen, it looks like both left and right wings are still attached to the a/c however, both are obviously highly damaged. But I will agree with you, even though I'm not an engineer, I suspect this frame is a write off.
Looking at pictures on AV Herald, the right horizontal stabilizer is almost fully missing.

When was the last time this kind of accident happened in Canada to a canadian registered aircraft? The last I can think of is Canadian DC-10 at YVR, but the outcome was not as terrible as this one since the DC-10 was repaired.

I am an aircraft engineer and I can tell you that the wing is not repairable. In general if the spare is broken, the wing usually cannot be structurally repaired with adequate fatigue life. Even if the spare is not broken, there is so much structural damage to the leading edge and pylon that it would be virtually impossible to design a Transport Cnada approved repair. The only way to get it flying is get a new wing, and that won't ever make financial sense.

Not trying to be an armchair NTSB investigator, but this definitely seems more like a crash than an overrun to me.

I could be wrong, of course... but that looks pretty substantial.

Glad it didn't turn it worse.

While it may have been true, not sure how the pax knew that as it would likely of happened too fast and a lot of times in incidents passengers always over exaggerate things.

News reports said that in that Delta incident at LGA the other week that the left or right wing (can't remember which) was completely ripped off.. yet it wasn't even close.
